WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else

who the fuck is Sony's flagship franchise character anyways?
Used to be Crash Bandicoot, until he went cross platform.

Fake edit: Fuck, I JUST now noticed that shit-chunk of an icon is the four buttons on the PS controller-- and I've had a PS3 since 2008 (sorry, I mean More Than 1 year ago). Got, what a stupid, ugly design.
You know, I looked at that and saw that link straight away, and I've never owned nor even played on a Sony console of any sort.

It seems that their Marketing department is doing their job then. :P
-
Or the fake Indiana Jones dude from Uncharted, but he's an even worse mascot than Master Chief. Ugh. What a douche.
His character is a major reason why I never finished Uncharted 1, and thus never even started any sequels
-
Yeah. I'd play a game about Sully, probably. But Nathan is... I dunno, he just pisses me off because he's basically in there killing 50,000 dudes to get artifacts for money, but the game makes him out to be this big hero or whatever. And the dudes he's shooting aren't like Nazis, like real Indiana Jones, they're just dudes. Sure, petty criminals in the drug trade usually, but not Nazis. In the Vita version, they hook him up with this chick who's all like, "sure you killed like 50,000 dudes but you're SO DREAMY!" and ugh.
At least Sully's an unapologetic scoundrel.
"Hey everybody, I'm Nathan Drake the lovable hero everybody loves!"
"Can you explain why you just shot those 20 dudes who are literally just soldiers in this country's army doing nothing but following the quite reasonable order to defend their country's archaeological sites from thieving foreigners like, well, you?"
"... look everybody I'm so lovable!"
-

That's the same problem I'm having going through the game. You're supposed to be on this otherwise "adventure", obviously trying to play off the Indiana Jones / Lara Croft type character. And the you pick up a machine gun and just start murdering humans right in the face. Not "I'll sneak around another way", or "try to talk my way out of it", use his skills to trap or evade his enemies. Just straight up dropping bodies, dancing over them, and never once stopping to go "my god-- the human lives I've taken-- are they worth it? Are they worth some gold and trinkets?"
-
Seriously. At least the people Lara Croft kills are actively trying to kill and/or rape her. Or literally fantasy monsters. And even then you can avoid the combat 80% of the time or so, if you want to play that way. (At least in the recent remake.)
Nathan Drake just murders the shit out of dudes just doing their jobs. Hell, in one bit of the Vita version, he blows up a gas truck, the guy was just delivering a shipment of gasoline, he wasn't even in the "evil" army! Why does Nathan Drake hate truck drivers!
Uncharted: the game by sociopaths for sociopaths.

Lots of new changes. I notice some things are missing from my start menu. The "Safely Remove Hardware" icon got WIndows-Tennified. And, as in the above screenshot, I now have a much easier time editing environment variables!! Also, the color you pick is the color of the focused window's title bar now. I'll have to get used to that again now that it isn't white.
-
It apparently also adds sponsored tile adverts for the Start menu, although you can turn them off.

Do I not own my computer under Microsoft's EULA?
-
Hahaha
You a funny man.
-
You own the computer. You license Windows.

Are they going to break copy-paste?

Are they going to break copy-paste?No, but I'm sure they'll accidentally introduce a few buffer overflow RCE vulnerabilities.
Then they'll release KB74986165274

Once that's published, attackers will realize that you can control the clipboard via Javascript, including copying to it. So the web is now a vector for attack, and plenty of AdSense and Doubleclick ads show up with the text

Then Microsoft will release KB826639293836823 to address the Javascript hole.
That one will break copy and paste.

You should have cross-posted this in the Evil Ideas thread. But, don't worry. I took care of it for you.

It finally happened!
Total time spent "validating my PC": 3 months 27 days! Just over 1/3rd of a year.
Interestingly, just 3 days ago I said "fuck it" and downloaded the updater myself, but I was in the middle of some stuff and didn't want to risk losing time by breaking my computer. I guess it saw it coming?
-

Maybe that was the missing requirement.
function CheckUpdates() while Not FileSystem.Has("WindowsUpdateTo10.exe") if Not AttemptDownload("WindowsUpdateTo10.exe") then sleep(259200000); // TODO: this seems too big for 3 hours? check math before release end if end while end function
-
I had two computers that got it as soon as it was available and reserved it, but then they both had to be reformatted to factory default because of filesystem corruption that prevented Windows Update from actually working. Then the reservation icons would not even appear so they both got the manual upgrade because we were impatient and figured as long as we had reset the computer anyway we might as well clean install Windows 10. The reformatting stuff happened literally a day before Windows 10 released and I was freaking out for no reason because I didn't yet know about the manual upgrade.

My MacBook with Boot Camp is, according to GWX, compatible but Apple won't release drivers for Boot Camp for the 2011 range because it's out of AppleCare period...

If you downloaded the version with the builtin November update there are a few bugs in it. It's apparently been fixed now so re-download it if you want to keep it around.
-
More like AppleDontCare, amirite?
-
AppleCare is three years from purchase, I have the 2011 model... Folks with the "Early 2012" model just squeeze that Win10 went RTM around their three year mark, but for 2011 drivers, "No Windows for you!"

Surely the Windows 8 drivers would Just Work™?
-
Not that easy. I've ran into this problem with my Roland synth from 2006. Its USB drivers are signed together with a catalogue file that is plain text, and it has a section where it declares the compatible OS versions. Even though the driver works under the newer OS, because of the compatibility declaration Windows refuses to install it. If you edit the catalogue file, the driver signature is no longer valid and you have to boot Windows with driver signature enforcement disabled in order to install the driver. Apparently in some cases you have to do this special restart before every use of the affected device.
-
? There's no difference between a Windows 8 driver and a Windows 10 driver. (Or a Windows 7 driver, for that matter. And I think also Vista-- it's XP that had the old driver model.)
-
Not that easy
I Googled it just now. It works fine according to several posts on the Apple forums.

If Roland did that, that's their own stupid bullshit. That's not the "correct" way to signing drivers in Windows.
The issue isn't OS compatibility, but driver model compatibility. Driver models don't change very frequently-- in fact I think for Windows, they've changed three times, EVER. (Win16 -> Win32, Win32 -> WinNT, WinNT -> Vista+)
-

Drivers, probably yes. Installers are a different matter entirely...
I think it was ATI where I had to dig for .ini files and tweak them manually.
-
It's not just drivers. It's things like the weird keyboard layout and the laptop buttons where all the F-keys are dual-assigned.
Drivers are drivers, sure, and the guts of a 2011 MBP aren't hard to find all the other drivers for but this is Apple and vendor-lock-in is a thing.
Also I looked on Google and there looks to be a fair amount of hit or miss on late 2011 MBPs.
-
How long has this option been here!? I've always wanted this...
I swear that's not what the options were before. Did the new major upgrade add it? Or has it always been there and like an idiot I never saw it?
Now if only we could get the system tray and clock on all taskbars...
-
Windows 8 had that as well :)
-
Now if only we could get the system tray and clock on all taskbars...
Xfce panel can do that, no problem.

8.1 probably, since that's when they added that section.

???
Of course, it could be that 8.1 Enterprise is ... special...

One of my computers has an ATI video card running on Windows 7. The Windows 7 driver doesn't work with Windows 10. So, I download the driver for Windows 8 and it works. Except they removed the ability to adjust underscan and I have to edit the registry so i can use all of my monitor
Thanks for nothing AMD.

How many displays are plugged in?
-
No "Multiple displays" on my system... Display 1: 3840x2160@250% Display 2: 1920x1200@100%
-
Huh.
Shows on my desktop with 2 displays, but not on my laptop with 1 display, so assumed it was related to that.
Odd.
-
This is a laptop, the 2nd monitor is via HDMI.
-
Huh.
Didn't get the Windows 8.1 backport of the Windows 10 feature they released.
CBA to find the KB number, but I'd bet it's one of them.
-
That isn't at all right. Show on all monitors was definitely there after 8.
Windows 8:
That's some kind of insane win7 skin on what might be 8. I don't want to know.
-

I think it's just the same colour.

Yes, grey bubble comboboxes are only the same color as square flat ones. You win.
-
I'm thinking tonight might be the night.

So I just fulfilled a support ticket to factory reset a Signature Edition (i.e. pure Windows, Microsoft approved) tablet. Here's what happened while testing it before handing it back:
Ok Microsoft let's try that.
Oh look it doesn't work.
New features? Oh, let me indulge you.
Oh ok. So does anything Windows specifically pops up and tells me to try in this trashheap actually work? Christ's sake this is worse than XP era Linux.

Be happy yours asks you to visit the Store!
Actually, wait, what happened to the store? I know I unpinned it (why is it a pinned item anyway ), but now I flat-out can't find it...Must have been an Important Security Update that automatically installed...
