The other one (which also serves as a guest wifi system for visitors from most EU academic institutions, by a clever piece of security federation) lets me into the internal network with only very light port blocking. The only things I can't just do when running on it are run DHCP, DNS or SMTP servers. I can live with that. (Outsiders on it get magically transparently VPNed into their home institution. It's actually rather awesome when that works.)
eduroam, right?

In my experience, the places with the least likelihood of working are the ones with conspicuous ubiquiti and Cisco APs stapled to the hallway ceilings. Great signal, no DHCP.

You're missing out. In #dwarffortress we're having a discussion about animals having gay sex.
15:27 < Hellzon> Going through the animal list with DT to find and butcher the gays and asexuals. The game finally did it, I'm a monster. 15:28 < BenLubar> Hellzon: uh, animals aren't afraid of casual relationships anymore 15:28 < Pici> Thats in .04 though, right? 15:29 < BenLubar> http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/changelog_page.php?version_id=66 15:29 < BenLubar> yep 15:29 < Hellzon> I'm running .04. You mean they can breed even if they don't swing that way? 15:29 < BenLubar> it's not a thing about whether they're willing to reproduce, it's about whether they're willing to marry 15:29 < BenLubar> and dwarves always marry before reproducing 15:29 < BenLubar> but animals never marry 15:30 < Hellzon> Oooh. 15:30 < Hellzon> I figured it kinda made sense that gay animals wouldn't reproduce. 15:38 < StoneToad> wait, so gay animals not reproducing is just an urban legend? 15:38 < BenLubar> well, it was a bug that was fixed in 0.42.04 15:38 < BenLubar> the game was checking the "will marry" flag when it shouldn't have been 15:39 < StoneToad> I thought that 0.41 has sexual preferences though? 15:40 < BenLubar> the preferences are [ORIENTATION:disinterested-chance:lover-chance:marriage-chance] 15:40 < BenLubar> and since animals don't have romance, they shouldn't care about that 15:40 < BenLubar> especially animals like chickens 15:42 < StoneToad> hmm interesting 15:42 < StoneToad> when did infinispores get removed 15:42 < StoneToad> was that in 41 somewhere? 15:43 < BenLubar> I think it was really early in the 0.40.xx series 15:43 < StoneToad> wondering if the 'they arn't breeding' reports were at least partially related to that 15:43 < BenLubar> they also added gelding at some point in that series 15:43 < StoneToad> cause I know that in the old versions I'd just lock a couple of males into a room by them selves 15:46 < Pici> infinispores? 15:46 < BenLubar> animals used to not need to be close to each other to breed 15:46 < Pici> ah 15:46 < BenLubar> and then they made animals need contact to breed and that also caused dwarves to not need marriage to breed for one very short-lived version 15:46 < BenLubar> so dwarves would just constantly fart out babies 15:48 < StoneToad> as long as they had passed withing 1 tile of a male dwarf 15:48 < StoneToad> that was hillarious in many ways

Congratulations, you created the world's worst markov chain text generator.
Seems to be working fairly well, all things considered.

That would actually fit better in a "summary of one-word-post" topic. Someone should get right on that.

I wholeheartedly agree. Then I could mute that topic, too.

Somewhere there has to be a programmer with the job description "Makes fake software for TV and movies"

Chilling like a boss. Relaxing after my Pack's first set of den meetings where I didn't have to fill in as a leader for any of the dens.
I finally feel like a real Cub Master.

I have always wondered if it is just a cobbled together GUI with nothing behind it, or a video file playing on the monitor. I am thinking that in most cases a video file would be easier and cheaper to make for most of the cheesy CSI type programs.

I don't even remember how I first saw that; probably also involved the knock-off 1970s/80s/90s(can't really date the movie from my memory) Lion Witch and a Wardrobe movies I recall also watching.
-
The movie? Or a means to play it? Or both?
I'm fairly certain the tape itself was part of the Great Storage Failure of 2005, wherein the doors to one of the storage units was... failed, and let in some rain and sunlight, which filled in the containers holding the tapes and then dried it out leaving deposits (after some time; we didn't go out to storage very often) and the damage was deemed unworthy of recovery.
We do still have a VCR/DVD Combo, but I'm not certain of the actual playback capabilities, it is currently holding up a bunch of random paperwork we're keeping for some reason....

Goddamned, my buddies and I in college made "where there's a whip, there's a way" jokes for years and years. Love it.

Browser fail?
No.
Tried several browsers; all failed the same way. I popped open the traffic monitor and saw that it was a timeout doing an HTTP GET of what was obviously some sort of dynamic page from the identical server that it had previously fetched a bunch of static content from. That doesn't smell like a browser bug to me…

eduroam, right?
Right. I'll often use it when I'm in my office rather than plugging the network cable in, and it's more supported than the other one now because everyone's phones and tables connect with it.
Great signal, no DHCP.
Ours is slow, but works. Except for this area over in the other building.

Boos are adorable.

About a year ago, I was in one of our other offices, and I found a Windows 95 PC sat in the corner of a desk. Turned on and apparently there for a purpose.
I didn't think to look inside it. Missed opportunity, maybe.

Status: My 4year old son is getting dressed. I had laid out his clothes and went to make myself some coffee. He comes in to the kitchen, struggling to get his arm through a hole on the article of clothing he has put over his head.
"Daddy, I can't wear this shirt. It is way too small!"
"Son, that isn't a shirt. It is the underwear I laid out for you."
"Oh. OK." -leaves kitchen-
Maybe I should pour him a cup also? He seems to be struggling.

Sounds like the acorn didn't fall too far from the tree.

Best to start them young, so their little livers have time to adjust before college.
