What's the worst part of the software development job?
At least some of you will say "giving estimates".
Well guess what I've be doing all day long?
So far, I did "Facility Management dashboard with half-translated confused specification" and "Like Uber only you can order/schedule spas, restaurants and other" (not kidding, that's what was presented to me).
Now, I'm doing "Integrate DFP with our proprietary HTML 5 platform. Or maybe the new platform we have ordered. Not sure."
This sucks.
-
"Facility Management dashboard with half-translated confused specification"
Six months of hours for a team of four, plus time and materials for overages not covered by spec.
"Like Uber only you can order/schedule spas, restaurants and other"
Thirteen months of hours for a team of six, plus time and materials for overages not covered by spec. Support and maintenance extra.
...
Oh, outside your budget? Get your nephew to do it, then.

Status: Computing the cost of off-site archive storage is complicated. I want to produce a graph of what things cost under various scenarios, but the spreadsheet to do this is getting a little bit intimidating even without extending it to actually plot the collection of scenarios I care about.
Ugh.
-
Just estimate $1M/month, and tell them you can find a good use for the rest? @dkf retirement fund assured!

4-5 months for a team of 2 backend and 1 frontend guys. The client is providing the spec and graphical mockups. Will know more after next week's meeting.

3 months for a team of 2 backend guys to develop the backend and API. 3 months each for the iOS, Android and web frontends. I might have to add more for admin panels and such. That was a very rough estimate, with zero details available.

Just estimate $1M/month
If only there was the budget to pay for that sort of thing, I wouldn't be having this discussion. (That's the planned budget for the entire project, but a lot of the money is earmarked for other things.)
-
Is this before or after the necessary ?

Well that's Christmas for one person sorted.

A BB pistol could probably fix that little problem.

I don't know why but I find that hilarious.

Yeah, then the crows and seagulls would be too distracted by the neighbor's rotting corpse to worry about the garbage.

I'm more worried about the source of the rotting corpse they're digging through the garbage for already.

It's a Pentium 3ghz with 4GB of ram. Don't know if 7 would even run on that.
Windows 7 can run on a Pentium Celeron at 700 MHz with 512 MB, doesn't mean you should.
But yes, Windows 7 is essentially the last version that was uber tolerant of old hardware and should run fine.
Now, 8 or higher, probably not, mostly because it's likely that your CPU doesn't support PAE (though you haven't given any clues for or against yet)

My master's studies.
Hey! I did that two weeks ago!
Well, maybe no the RPN, though that might actually have been easier, come to think of it.My extra feature as a virtual paper history (like those financial calculators).

PAE
I don't know what that is, and given the computer is currently running XP, I'm going to guess "no".

Physical Address Extension. Basically, allows a 32-bit processor to address more than ~3 GB of Ram. This (along with NX, short for No Execute, and SSE2, a set of "advanced" CPU instructions) are essentially game-breaking requirements as soon as you want Windows 8.Link for reference:

A BB pistol could probably fix that little problem.
But that would require getting dressed, going to the store, fighting Black Friday crowds, spending a significant sum of money on something I don't really want while I'm unemployed and money is in short supply, shooting said pistol across, toward or along a busy, heavily trafficked street. What could possibly go wrong with that plan?
Also, since I have no experience whatsoever shooting any sort of pistol, other than a squirt gun or the like, hitting my targets without getting close enough to scare them away is also likely to be a .
Update: Trash collection came while I was in the shower. It appears they even picked up most of the bigger bits of trash strewn about; neighbor just needs to spend a couple of minutes sweeping.
-

I don't know, but I'd guess that if there is a rotting corpse in the garbage, it's most likely the remains of a Meleagris gallopavo.

Status: contemplating what it takes to install software version 6.2 with translation version 6.8 when both packages are always supposed to have the same release number and then not notice that the application menu is broken - which you must use to enable people to log in again after applying translations.
This was an interesting afternoon fishing a wrong translation from the db.

Think of it as an investment. After you're done with your neighbor, you can go to the bank and get some free money.

Too many humans in this one. Also: bickering

status Cards against Humanity is plagiarizing me:
#About This Amazing Offer
If I give you $5, will I actually get anything in exchange?
- We’re so glad you asked! No.**Why are you selling nothing?** - On Black Friday, everybody is selling something. We’re the only company to offer the superior Black Friday experience of buying nothing. **But really, I’ll get something, right?** - No, we’re not even taking your shipping address. All we have to offer is nothing. **But I need to buy your game right now.** - Sometimes buying nothing is better than buying Cards Against Humanity. This is one of those times. **If I give you $5, what are you going to do with the money?** - That’s for us to know and you to find out. We’ll make the announcement soon. **Why would anyone just give you $5?** - Because the greatest Black Friday gift of all is buying nothing. We’re offering that for the rock-bottom price of $5. How can you afford NOT to seize this incredible opportunity?</blockquote>

I'd advise taking them to court.
I am not a lawyer. This is not legal advice.

There was exactly one human in that one. It's like sesame street. One person of each race.
-
Nah it was all humans and one of those little midget space-elf alien things and then the charr. What I don't get is your OWN PC didn't seem to make an appearance at all. Which is kind of weird.
-
The German political party "Die PARTEI" did the complete opposite. Due to the way the German political party funding system works, they simply sold 100€ notes for the price of 80€.
This then allowed them to access funds from the federal government which in turn created a net gain for them.
Don't ask me how that works - I'm still trying to wrap my head around this particular piece of absurdity.
-
Same way Uwe Boll somehow managed to trick the German tax and creative grants systems to earn money by making really, really shitty movies.
-
What I don't get is your OWN PC didn't seem to make an appearance at all.
Well, there are 10 different player character voice actors, and each race has a different person they know before that cutscene, so they'd have to record that entire scene at least five times if the player character participated.

This is why it'll be a game-changer once they can make voice synthesis get beyond the point of being stuck in the auditory uncanny valley. Difficult? Yes. Worth it? Well, whoever does it first will make a shit-ton of money.

That's when you use the, fanfare, Insert Reaction Shot!

Status: In the Durmand Priory library, there is a book titled "Discourse on a Tome (1075 A.E.)" that starts with this quote:
I maintain the implausibility of it. The Great Dwarf's prophecies are the blusterings of a bored super being, assuming the tome isn't a forgery.
Apparently Jeff was already alive 300+ years ago.

Status: We had Turkey Salad sandwiches for dinner. Made from an Alton Brown recipe and one of the best uses of leftover turkey.
http://www.seriouseats.com/recipes/2009/11/turkey-salad-leftovers-recipe.html
My in-laws smoke two turkeys every year, cut the breasts off and discard the rest. I always take the leftovers and make turkey salad and freeze the rest.
The recipe isn't real picky either. You can use virtually any dried fruit or fresh or dried herbs and it will turn out well. I find that dried cherries and fresh sage works best for us.

Ditto, since you mention it.
Our toddler brought this one home with him. Now he is feeling better and the wife and I are miserable.

They do that every year. One year they posted an email from a guy who paid for nothing, but thought he was buying the game (because he didn't read?) and got super pissy about it.
