why not abandon #gamergate and grab a new hashtag, which doesn't have any death threats associated with it?
#ethicsinvideogames
"But nobody knows that one and how else is my precious snowflake tweet going to be noticed?"
-
I just read part of the Wikipedia article about Gamergate and I just have to ask if I got this right: a girl developed a game, which some thought got undue recognition by the media, so they started sending her death and rape threats?
People are crazy and I really hope I'm wrong. BTW, this might be a relevant article.
-
It doesn't matter what tag you pick if they'll keep blaming the threats on you. So they didn't bother.
-
She did a number of things that made people mad. When they were trying to figure out what was going on, in the midst of a large number of people going crazy in every direction, a large number particularly worried about the allegations about journalists sleeping with their subjects (her in this case), a bunch of sites started banning all discussion of this popular topic, and gaming sites published a bunch of articles saying all gamers are evil. That's when it became a movement.
She sparked the thing, though. She's got the continued hatred of people even now, because she was getting threats already and used this situation to make a lot of money off patreon. She also spoke to the UN about it all recently, and embarrassed them thoroughly.
The wiki article has been an edit war for over a year, so it isn't very trustworthy.

OK, not really get it: some sites started banning the discussion and publishing those articles, but it was her fault?
used this situation to make a lot of money off patreon
How did she do that? She also spoke to the UN about it all recently, and embarrassed them thoroughly.
OK, this I get. I don't think that speaking to the UN can be described anything else than "whining"?The wiki article has been an edit war for over a year, so it isn't very trustworthy.
Thanks for the heads up. Is there any trustworthy article about the topic?
-

No.
How did she do that?
I'm being attacked give me money.
OK, not really get it: some sites started banning the discussion and publishing those articles, but it was her fault?
No? But alongside all the people who were worried about gaming sites being corrupt, there were the same idiots there always are. And for a while, anyone who said anything disparaging about her got called gamergate as well, so it's all a mess now.
Emotions are high everywhere on this. You'd be better off ignoring it.

Guess I'd better do that. Thanks for the explanation

Here's an idea: if you are genuinely concerned about Ethics In Videogames, why not abandon #gamergate and grab a new hashtag, which doesn't have any death threats associated with it?
It's about Ethics in Video Game JOURNALISM video games are ethical and games aren't dead and it's the media ruining things and
#ITS ABOUT JOURNALISM NOT GAMERS FUCK YOU I WILL RAPE YOU IN FRONT OF YOUR FAMILY THEN SLIT ALL YOUR THROATS!!!!!!!

I'm curious. Are we talking about real death threats, that a person should be legitimately concerned about? Or just some gross exaggeration for the sake of getting sympathy?
Maybe I'm too normal, or out of touch or too old or too something, but I can't envision myself getting all worked up because someone said "Fuck you , I should kill you" on the Internet.
-
Are we talking about real death threats, that a person should be legitimately concerned about?
Yes.
-
Solaris
Didn't that kind of die out around the time Oracle bought Sun and then immediately lost interest in all of Sun's products?
-
The OS being dead doesn't stop blakeyrat from telling everyone that MacOS has done all kinds of innovative stuff already.
-
Half-Life 2 was innovative, and modern video games are still trying to catch up. I can't wait until video game technology advances far enough for there to be a Half-Life 3. Because if I do, I'll probably die first.
-
I'm curious. Are we talking about real death threats, that a person should be legitimately concerned about? Or just some gross exaggeration for the sake of getting sympathy?
My impression is that some of them were very real and potentially serious threats. While most of them were probably some angry posters venting without considering the effect it would have, and more than a few were just trolls doing what trolls do, as I understand it as much as maybe a quarter carried real intent of bodily harm. I haven't looked into it, but there was more than enough reason for people to fear for their lives. Weren't there actual arrests made at one point, based on people actually stalking Sarkeesian? Arrests in and of themselves may have been just a an over-reaction on the part of the authorities, but IIUC at least one armed individual actually tried to attack her.
-

Real death and rape threats, real doxxing and real swatting.
-
The horrifying part for me is that people think that if you disagree with her, you support the behavior of the worst sort of people. No middle ground is allowed. And yet that isn't enough. Saying "there seems to be a problem with journalism here" got total biscuit death threats against his whole family.
Now you have people like Blakey here, who use being worried about ethics to specifically mean "horrible rape apologist".
It's all horrible.

Yes.
Have these death threats actually been verified, or are we just taking someone's word for it?

Maybe it's just me, but the word poopyhead is so funny to me that I keep visiting this thread expecting it to be funny which it isn't.

That's why I feel bad for Liana K. She is exactly what the industry needs: an intelligent, well-spoken "non-radical" feminist who is also an avid game, costumer, entertainer-- with experience with game development, voice acting, TV (in front and behind the camera), radio. A game journalist with integrity. A sex-positive "equality, not special treatment" feminist.
She's written tons criticizing gamergate, Anita S, Feminist Frequency, the whole ball of wax. The key word there being criticizing, as in actually analyzing the content, message, delivery-- verifying points, analyzing reactions, looking at studies, etc, etc-- not attacking. A great series about that, "Why Feminist Frequency almost Made Me Quit Writing...". 4 parts, also read via YouTube:

Then you might find it interesting that Valve accidentally pushed out an hl3.txt in the map editor files for a DOTA2 update last week.
It's not the only one either... there was an rpg.txt in there as well.
There are only help files, but they do shine some light on some of the things planned on being in HL3.
-
Yeah, I saw that. But apart from better graphics, what has the games industry come up with since 2004? They could be working on story and terrain, but imagine how much they would have had to change if they made Half-Life 2 without a physics engine and then went back and added all the physics-based gameplay in later.
-

You're seeing more games where what you do has some consequences for the world beyond βwe show screen A at the end vs screen Bβ. That sort of thing is very difficult to do a good job of so as to keep the amount of work you need to do sane, as opposed to the effort required increasing exponentially.
If they can crack good procedural voice synthesis (as opposed to merely adequate) then that'll be a real game changer, almost the equivalent of going from silent movies to talkies. (It'll enable having voice-heavy games without spending a fortune on sound recording.)

Played Titanfall? That game pretty much revolutionized movement in FPS games.

Supposedly Fallout will do something similar to that.
The Gamebryo/Creation Engine "automatic lip syncing" code alone must have saved thousands and thousands of man-hours. Even if it's sometimes off by a third of a second or so.

Somebody will crack regonial accents with TTS it will be the best thing ever. Put a friend of mine out of a job but it will be a marvel.

Like pretty much everybody else on Earth, I've never played it.
Titanfall was great. It's a pity it dieing.
Bah. I only really liked the mechs, and they kept de-emphasizing them. Kind of annoyed me. You build a game marketed as the guy being in a mech most of the time, and in the actual game you rarely get a damned mech. And they keep adding no-mech game modes. And after like 372 DLCs they don't even introduce any new mech chassis.
Also it's dumb to have to "earn" the mech playstyle (which could not be MORE different from the on-foot playstyle) by being good at the on-foot playstyle. People who were good on-foot didn't give a flying shit about mechs, because they could get more points on-foot. People who wanted to play mechs didn't get to play them as often because they weren't as good at on-foot play. Dumb dumb design.
Advanced Warfare may or may not have ripped-off Titanfall's movement controls, but it was a much better game in general.
-
Dumb dumb design.

It must be a typo, Valve doesn't use the number 3 in game titles, its against their religion or something
