🗣 Things Our Customers Have Said About Discourse Thread
-
Discourse being shit is a known issue. I just felt like making a ban.d reference.
-
GADP is to just make a post, and then edit the Glossawiki.
The index is no longer a wiki. You just have to wait for it to garner enough votes or have on the TL4s like it enough to add it to the discoindex.
-
So, we've switched to non-GADP methods in order to improve the short-term performance of the Discopaedia and improve the officers' bonuses?

No, it's just that the GADP methods were updated on 2015-5-11[cite 1], [cite 2] (have you been paying attention?) to "improve" the quality of the Discopædia (we even have one definition that was not added to the index based on a public poll). Further, the current GADP methods help to make sure that when new definitions are added, the alphabetical integrity of the index is maintained.
and improve the officers' bonuses
We get bonuses?

Go ahead and add an extra zero to your bonus, just for that awesomely ic response.
left or right side, won't matter much

I love how when clicking a link, I'm never sure if the target post is the one just off centre of the screen, or the one scrolled to the top of the screen, or the one scrolled to the bottom of the screen. Unless I click "Share Post" to find out the ID of the post and match it to the URL.
Highlights? watsthat?

None of the above; it's the one
random()
posts off-screen because .
-
It's supposed to be the one just off centre, as this is the "reading sweet spot" randomly +/- a random number of jellypotato.

Highlights
It actually does highlight.
For, like.. 3 seconds. Because if the page got jellypotatoed it's gonna be super-easy to find the highlighted post.....

Now that I've written some more posts I have more severe issues with the system: wonky oneboxing, wonky notifications, and the fact that this thing seems to consume an inordirnate amount of resources.
I have to restart Firefox after spending half an hour here and writing a few (less than 10) posts if I want to stop it from lagging horribly. What the ■■■■■■■. I've never seen this happen before.

If you're feeling helpful, you can post a bug report on ban.d.

In 10 years there will be no more disability.
Fuckin' retards.

I'm pretty sure it's possible to design a JavaScript-powered site that's also accessible for the disabled; of course, such a design requires thought, planning, and intelligence

So ... completely counter to CDCK's design philosophy.

It would be nice to use Discourse when you're blind. I can imagine it now: No horrible UX, no Jellypotato…
Wait a minute…

I don't know how far the screen readers have come, but I'm sure you'd really have to go some to implement Discourse like UI and infiniscroll on them.
Conversely, conventional forum scripts work pretty good though even there some are more equal than others.

I can't imagine this. I don't think I've ever listened to him. I guess I win.

I would imagine him to sound both shrill and smug at the same time, if that's possible.

I'm waiting for the part where he explains how great it is to have a large number of people test your software for free and send you bug reports, and how that makes your software vastly more stable, efficient and easy-to-use...

At around 8 minutes (no, I haven't listened to 8 minutes of the cunt, skipped to there randomly), he's talking about taking deliberate moderation actions. It's not possible to accurately transcribe the utter smugness of this, by the way.
If you are at a place where everybody is doing X or you see tons of X then X is the accepted behaviour at that location. If you don't send the message that "Wow, this is an OK question but it's not really right for our site", if you're not sending that message of what's inappropriate on your site, you're saying "it's appropriate". You're saying "please do more of this".
Substitute "submitting bug reports" for X.
-
Substitute "submitting bug reports" for X.
Substitute "Discourse sucks" and "Jeff is a wanker" for X.
-
Not about Discourse, but about the previous project he bikeshedded around in:
Question: Why can't users with <1000 reputation view raw vote totals?
Answer: resources, simply. Votes are saves as an aggregate in the DB. So getting the vote-break is another call. If everyone could do it, we'd lose speed.
Comment: The original "resources" excuse sounds like such a Jeff-ism. I'm sure it's not really true today, if it ever was. (Jeff had an occasional habit of making up quick excuses and then stubbornly clinging to them).

Also this:
Our tracking code only counts "1 API request" for a topic view weather you scroll through a 1 million post topic or not.

Also, 'weather'.
-
I know it's the done thing to make fun of Discourse, and in the name of the Fox God I know I've done more than my fair share, but that's something that actually makes sense. I could go to the top of this topic right after posting this post and scroll through all 492 posts, but since I never left the topic, it's still one view. To get another view, I'd need to change topic then change back, or hit Refresh in the browser.
-
something that actually makes sense.
If it does, it's by accident.
As already quoted...@Discopope said:

-
No, those are necessary: Sam was pointing out that one item, labelled an "API request" by the admin interface, actually consists of dozens of bloated API requests. Unfortunately, as Jeff points out, it's not one "page view" either, because the concept of a page has been banished entirely from Discourse. So it's.... a thingie.
-
Since it's loading a topic, I'd personally call it a "topic load"
-
Shush, you. This is not the appropriate time or place for sensible ideas!
-
It would still need to be 1 "API request", though. Or 1 API "request" to be even better.
