🙅 THE BAD IDEAS THREAD

I once found one of these, still flashing, in my wardrobe.
Also, no idea how it got there.
Maybe someone in Narnia didn't want it anymore?

My brother bought one of those from a jumble sale once. No idea why

How drunk were you at the time? Or the night before?

Diversity is cool and stuff, but forced diversity? No thanks; let it happen naturally.
And 'Coloured' as a term fell out of favour decades ago...
-
-
What is "Coloured"?
Not sure if honest question or what, but will give it a shot. Very much an outdated, but basically significant (for different values there of) portion of ethnic heritage not from Europe.

I was being sarcastic.
This is like someone decided they need to be super PC, but then tasked some 60 years old white guy to write the actual text. "Coloured?" "Indians"? At least they avoided saying "negros"....

Yeah, no. If we are talking US usage that is not old enough, but as @HardwareGeek pointed out it is used in other parts of the world.

Not outdated any more. The term "People of Color" is very common these days. I wouldn't be surprised if "People of Colour" were as well. A Person of Color is someone who is not a Person of Pallor, such as myself.
-
-
I prefer "glow in the dark" myself.
-
Here are two men.
Which one of them is in this third picture?
-
-
At least they avoided saying "negros"
What is wrong with that term? Oh I see, because it's Spanish, that's racist.
In case you don't get the joke:
fuck off
-
Unknowable, because whichever game this is from uses the same image for both men in the suit?
-
I had a rant about that the other day. Why can't we just use words any more? Why do we have to keep inventing new ones? Oh, yes, because some idiots used them in a derogatory way, once upon a time, far far away.
Because some people used "negro" and "black" in a negative way, I am now not allowed to use those words. Because I'm racist if I do, apparently. I then have to go out and research why I'm being considered a bigot. Oh, right, because some shit happened before I was born on the opposite side of the planet. Makes sense!
And "coloured"? Really? That's the stupidest euphemism ever. What am I then, transparent? Can I just strip and go rob a bank without being spotted by the cameras? Do people even know what words even mean any more?
Here, have George Carlin being funny on this subject:
-
Words: it's not the word itself that is offensive, but the way that people use it. Since that changes over time (especially in English) the set of words that are thought to be offensive also changes over time. 'Tis how it goes…
-
I understand this concept.
I do not allow my understanding of it to stop me from ranting, though.

Oh. Carry on then.

Please to let the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People know.
Founded Feb. 12. 1909, the NAACP is the nation's oldest, largest and most widely recognized grassroots-based civil rights organization.

On an intellectual level, we want all people to get along. But inevitably, we end up organizing into groups and strengthening our social bounds by demeaning members of different groups, be it in terms of race, culture, sexual orientation, mental state, whatever. We want to stop, but we can't. In large populations, instinct always trump reason in the long run.
So, since we can't change human nature, we go for a symbolic gesture and "sacrifice" a bad word instead.
"We can't change the way you think, but we can damn well make it taboo to say the word you use to express what you think and force you to use a different word, until we sacrifice that word too."
Therefore, the history of words like "idiot", "moron"... Pretty much any "bad" word you can think of has history in being used to describe a certain group or characteristic. Then, people outside that category start using it in a demeaning way. So we mark that a "bad" word and invent a new one. Yay, problem fixed, progress! But pretty soon, we find a new word to express what we feel against icky people different than us, and the cycle repeats.
Watch it happen with "autism", "depression" and "ocd" next.
Stupid but understandable.

I've got an old (1939, reprinted 1946) book that used to belong to my grandmother of ten thousand jokes, one of which (in the chapter "Races and Nations") described a Black guy reasoning something like this:
"I don't know what all this fuss is about 'colored' people. They tell me black and white aren't colors, they're the absence of color. So I don't get why there should be any fuss about black people and white people, because really they're both the same!"

/me am going to start referring to peoples skin colour using hex codes. I myself am 0x87421F.

And "coloured"?
Because coloured also includes smurfs, and we don't want to be racists against smurfs do we?

For no particular reasons, I was looking at ECU mods for my minivan, and I came across this beauty:
http://www.performancechiptuning.com/Voltage+Performance+Chip+Module/7/
Apparently it is just a wiring harness that adds additional grounding points to the chassis, which somehow makes your car work better. I have to admit to skepticism, particularly since I couldn't find any specific benefits claimed.
Oh, my mistake, it might increase your fuel economy "up to" 5% and give you a few more HP. You'd probably be better off with something like this:
http://www.performancechiptuning.com/Stage+2+Performance+Chip/11/
ETA: A number of people have reported it makes their audio system sound better. Now we know we're in woo territory.
-
You also need some flip-up Dodge tow mirrors, I hear they'll add 75 horsepower and 4 mpg to your minivan.

Maybe Lucas was on to something after all...

Two men are hospitalized after an alcohol-fueled argument began over which phone is better: iPhone or Android.
Tulsa police say a woman found a man covered in blood, stumbling around the parking lot of the Evergreen Apartments around 1 a.m.
When police arrived at the apartment complex, they learned that the roommates had been drinking and arguing over their mobile phones.
Police say the two men broke beer bottles and stabbed each other with them. One of the men smashed a bottle over the back of the other man's head.
Police aren't sure who they will charge or if charges will be filed at this time. Both men are being treated at an area hospital for their injuries.
Police did not respond when our photographer asked which phone is better.
Emphasis mine. LOL

Lumia?

I was joking!
I meant to say Tizen.

I think it's regional, but I had people swear a "Jägrmeister" sticker adds 5hp to their cars. 10 if it's one of those that are full length of your windshield.
And when I say it's regional, I mean only works if owner is a Croat. That, or it stops working when you cross the border. Never tested.

I was joking!
I meant to say Tizen.Hang on, have to empty this bottle before I can break it...

Hold on, where's my old Siemens S35? I'll show you whippersnappers what a real phone is...

Jägrmeister
Did you mean Jägermeister?

I had the S45 and loved it.

Because I try and not butcher spellings just because it uses an "unusual" letter. Missing the
e
was a tyop, rather than not knowing it should be there.I had the S45 and loved it.
That was the last genuninely good one, IIRC. After that it all went a bit pear-shaped for Siemens.
Or was it that only the S-series was good after that but everything else was crap? Something like that, I know the time when S45 was out was a turning point of some kind.

-
Not really, but I'll take it.
