That goes all the way (that I remember) back to early versions of Netscape, where they came right out and said adding obnoxious new features like <blink> was more fun than bugfixing.

Given how Mozilla's always been a buggy POS, and the attidude in recent years of randomly moving UI around to fuck with users, etc., etc., I would avoid anything they had their hands on, on general principle.

There's nothing wrong with asking, but expectations are likely to be dashed.

Yeah, it was my reaction too when I first heard that Mozilla is making their own programming language to port Firefox to. But you know what? This language is genuinely good. They stated very clear goals: make it as fast as C++, but make segfaults and memory leaks impossible. And they've mostly achieved that. And as a side effect, they made tons of cool features that make code very ergonomic and nice to read (postfix type notation + type inference = win).

So he removed the highlight except for when the OP is the latest poster. The topic has now moved on to everyone - basically staff from multiple forums and Sam - telling Jeff that this new UI is unintuitive. Jeff's response is to dig in his heels:

The worst part is, he has been presented with real occurrences where users were confused by his new UI. And he still refuses to change it.

He really really really really likes to selectively remove information following logic that is not at all apparent to an observer.
I'm tempted to go over and suggest that he put borders on all the poster, heat mapped to how long ago they posted. But only on topics that have an odd number of posters,.

Ah, I had the benefit of using WinPhone before Windows 8, so I'd already gotten used to the interface; it works pretty well on a touchscreen
I also had the benefit of using WinPhone before Windows 8.
That's why I am now using Android and iOS, but never again Windows Mobile.

What have you been observing? To me it seems pretty obvious how and why he goes about removing things.
You gotta keep in mind how he uses Discourse. That is, he has a team who reads messages for him so he doesn't have to read everything.
He knows how Discourse is working since he is greatly responsible for (
ing) the specs.
He likes whitespace.
He believes any change is justified because you can "easily" dig through Discourse CSS to revert it.
He told us on numerous occasions that we are using Discourse the wrong way.
His agenda is teaching the internet how to discuss things by the use of software.If you take all those dots here and connect them you get a squiggly line. Thats why the changes he does seem arbitrary and unintuitive.
So the way he does things is as follows:
Every once in a while he is reminded of what features Discourse has.
He then realizes he doesn't use a certain feature (like clown vomit, last reply indication, bookmarks (or stars), quotes).
Next he will remove it, pat himself on the shoulder on a job well done and does other PHB-like things. (AW SNAP, I went there :D )
Any user input can be ignored under the premise of trying to teach them about a better web. Also any nonbelievers can still revert the change or not update or fork Discourse and revert the change themselves
!!I really think they should try to seperate UI-updates and Discourse-updates so until a certain point (let's call it a release) you can get all the bugfixes without having to worry about more or less random design-changes.

They did, but it fell down after all the support beams got changed to round and the border paint was stripped off.
The customers were getting annoyed with CDCK switching the wheels of their bikes with wheels of a more "aesthetically pleasing" shape anyway.

Why does this site need to "load a dictionary" and then "build an index"? It's a fucking dictionary. Is parsing lojban such a CPU-intensive operation that it needs to be offloaded in full to the client? Are they running their servers on a moldy potato?

The dictionary is entirely client-side. You can use it without an internet connection once you've loaded it once.
