Old fart.
Used Cobol during the Y2K era.
Wrote reports at university in WordStar 3.3.
Remember when Oracle fitted on 2 floppy disks. In fact, I have them still lying around.
Used Unix before Linux came into being, and still don't like it.
Hate Emacs.

RE: Tales from Coronavee-rooss Italy, mamma mia!
The good thing about Corona is, that a lot of meetings at work are now cancelled since they are "not essential". Makes me wonder why they were planned in the first place.
But I now finally have time to get things done.

Shocking!
49 per cent of 11 to 13-year-olds have no access to the internet? -

Uhm, isn't that exactly what UFO means (other than that it is flying)?

@PleegWat I'm not a DB guy, but is MongoDB really that bad?
It depends.
On what you use it for.
On if and how you implement your datamodel.
On your level of knowledge of and experience with MongoDB.Reality is that MongoDB is often used by nitwits, to store perfectly relational data in a non-normalized way, whilst totally lacking any knowledge of Mongo (or any other database for that matter). Because raisins.
The same actually as with relational databases.
Bonus word of the day: whilst.

Did you wait for it to finish, or did you get a cup of coffee first?

@Rhywden It is good to be careful. You don't want something like this to happen, where apparently they hit a gas line while installing a car charger.
The people across the street have a NEST doorcam.

Incidentally this situation is why Napoleon was supposedly short - being 5 foot whatever in French feet is taller than 5 foot whatever in Imperial feet, but it suited the English to spin it as such.
And Napoleon did have two imperial French feet!

RE: Driving Anti-Patterns - Necro Edition
@remi said in Driving Anti-Patterns - Necro Edition:
New proposal!
Instead of UTC, let's all use UTC.
While UTC stands for "Coordinated Universal Time," UTC instead stands for "Universal Constant Time."
Right from the start you can see it's better as, while we keep the same short name for backwards (???) compatibility, the new name at least has 1 letter that matches the meaning whereas the old one has none.
But the true greatness of UTC is what it really means. It is, as the name says, "constant." Meaning that it does not change. Ever. Anywhere. On Earth or anywhere else.
So it is always 9:00 UTC. Everywhere. All the time. Or 17:00 UTC if you want to have a drink, it's the same. Or anything, really. The number doesn't matter, just the fact that it never changes.
No more time conversions since the time is the same everywhere. No more complicated duration computations since the time is the same all the time so every duration is always 0.
That's it, problem solved!
Agreed, but at least define UTC as beer o'clock, instead of as 9:00 UTC.

What's new: In Outlook Web App you can't actually manually edit the subject anymore. Because that would be too useful?
You can't do that in "New Outlook" either.
I tried it for a while, but switched back to Old Outlook. -

The diameter of a softball is 3.8 inches, and the circumference can range from 11 to 16 inches.
That's not how diameter and circumference work.
Toby Faire, a diameter of 3.8 inches gives a circumference of 11.34 inches which is in the range of 11 to 16 inches.

status: father bought from NellisAuction a crate of fake noodles.
I say fake, because they're not made of anything, apparently. Taste like I'm eating extruded silicone or maybe seaweed jelly, but even seaweed has a small amount of taste!
Agree.
I tried Konjac noodles a few years ago, but they are so slippery that (a) they don't absorb any taste, and (b) they are very difficult to chew.
Not a success. There are better ways to cut down on calories. -

First, when you are assigned (or when you pick up) the story, read it and determine if you are clear what the end result should be. If not, send it back to the person responsible, call a meeting, or fix it yourself - whichever is the accepted practice where you work.
So you don't do refinements?
