IBuyPower's checkout page and support, yikes
-
Seems not too many people hit that page, or nobody cares.
The guy who does the chat support also writes the website error messages.

They just didn't care!

Or we've found somewhere else @accalia moonlights…

that's pretty much my approach. i build on Newegg because they have all the data i need. i typically build 4 PCs one AMD and one intel with all the stops pulled out. and then one intel/amd that I can actually afford.
Then with the model numbers in hand i hop over to Amazon, filter for prime and loadup my shopping cart.
I never build when I need it immediately. I tend to spread my purchased over about a month, between newegg and Amazon. Half of the newegg purchased parts end up on sale or shellshocker that way. Saves me a couple hundred dollars.
-
The only browser that works with their site is IE. I bought a laptop from ibuypower, never again. Can confirm their support is fucking awful, and if there is an issue on receipt of product you're expected to foot the bill to return the problem component or product.
Note: that's not after x days. That's DOA.
-
Like... brick and mortar places?
-
I ended up buying PC parts from Amazon and Newegg and will be building one. Yay.

The problem with Fry's is that they don't have an online store
WAT. Have you never been to frys.com before? Or so you mean some weird blakeyrat thing that doesn't mean what other people mean when they say "they don't have an online store."
-
Pretty sure Fry's is the last.
There's Micro Center still. And technically Tiger Direct exists.
-
I really hope that image isn't being rehosted, so they realize it's being loaded from here ten times more than from their own website. 😈
-
As if those guys would ever look at their web analytics data.
-
They'll soon notice when their ISP notifies them that they're using more bandwith than the state quota allows.
-
Yeah, NewEgg + Fry's (where they have stores) + Amazon put those guys out of business years ago. Well, that, and the fact that 90% of them were scummy assholes who lied about what components they put in a system, would steal your naked photos if you took your PC in for repair, etc. In short: they were killed-off and nobody misses them.
Did you have PC Club where you were? They were one of the first decent sized chains to die, and for good reason. I built a couple of systems from parts that I bought there, but they were total shitholes. The store they had here was dirty and the people in there were mostly incompetent. Then NewEgg came to the forefront and they were dead in no time.
Also, CompUSA. Those guys sucked almost as much.
-
We had Computer City, which was great or possibly nostalgia.
Then CompUSA took them over and we all switched to NewEgg because fuck CompUSA.
-

I am not entirely sure what he is getting on about, but I kind of agree with him. Frys.com is total rubbish. It is horribly laid out and it is usually impossible to narrow your search down to what you actually want to find, which leaves you wading through hundreds or thousands of items to try and find what you want on their website. It is usually quicker to just go to the damned store.
-
because fuck CompUSA.
And Circuit City. I don't remember what happened, but I recall Circuit City burning me on a sale right before they went under and I had a bit of schadenfreude at the news.
-
Keep in mind that Fry's only advantage over NewEgg and Amazon is that you can in theory drive in and buy the part the same day you decide you want it. That's their only competitive advantage. Ok? Got it?
So the best idea for Fry's is to have a e-commerce website that doesn't search local store inventory. Because they seem to have this weird idea that Fry's can compete with NewEgg or Amazon on their own turf and, guys, you can't.
What you can do is let me search my local store's inventory so I know my hour-long drive won't be wasted. But, oh hey, their website doesn't allow that and thus my hour-long drive on Saturday was entirely wasted.
That's what I call a useless website.

Uhmmmmm, well, it kind of allows that functionality. I think I get what you are saying, have search results only return things that are in stock at your store of choice. You can sort of do it the other way around though, find what you want and see if it is in stock at your store.

That's how most retailers do it. I don't have Fry's near me, but I do that sort of thing all the time with Home Depot, Target, Walmart, Lowe's...
-

If it does, that's brand new since the last time I tried to get some slight utility off that worthless website.

It has been like that since they moved from outpost.com, IIRC. That is how I usually do it.

Agreed, but I did not want to have a conversation about reading comprehension and shoulder aliens as I did not sleep well last night.
-

Ok, well since I don't know if that happened yesterday or 47 years ago, that's a helpful response, thanks.
-
Several years ago. It has been like that for quite a while..
-
Ok I still don't care.
It's slotted in my brain under "useless website" and there it remains. The fact that I went to their store and found NOT A SINGLE GeForce 970 IN STOCK OF ANY BRAND is not helping to dislodge it.
-

As of....last night...both MicroCenter and Staples[1] do it This Right Way... really helpful.
[1] I'm looking for an inkjet printer, so yes Staples.

Why?
Scavenger hunt.
OK, OK...real reason.... my old one's not working.
I need LOTS of printed paper to wrap my belt onions with. Why?

Down the back of the sofa, perhaps?
Sweet! FOUND IT!
Sneaky bugger.
Man, I'm relieved... I thought somebody let it outside by accident... And it doesn't have tags.

What's going on here?
-
Also, once my tax return comes in I'm going to upgrade to a laser printer of some kind and quit spending $50 on Wal-Mart inkjets that last exactly 43 pages.
-

Just me imagining your office looks like something out of 'A Beautiful Mind' with snippets of code posted up all over the place.
(BTW, I am not making fun of you. I have done the same thing.)
Also, once my tax return comes in I'm going to upgrade to a laser printer of some kind and quit spending $50 on Wal-Mart inkjets that last exactly 43 pages.
Probably a good call. Inkjets are rubbish, for the most part.
-

Normally they collect in neat piles until I forget what the pages are for. Then I fold them into paper airplanes and chuck them across the office.
-

Sure. But us old geezers with kids still have to scan, copy, and print at least a few things a month and sometimes more...
My last one's survived at least a few years... I don't even remember when I bought it.
-
I don't print very often but I got a laser a couple years ago and it's been rock solid. I wouldn't go back to inkjets.
-

At least you have a defined work flow.
-

YMMV. For what I need, I'm not interested in spending the time and money on a color laser (printer).

I looked around at lasers on Newegg and it looks like a basic wireless networked color laser costs around $200 which isn't that much more expensive than a non-crappy inkjet.

And will be cheaper once you factor in all of the ink you waste cleaning heads, the increased cost per page of refills and also the fact that they do not last nearly as long. Laser is much cheaper in the long run.
-
Laser is much cheaper in the long run.
And you can fill your house with that lovely toner/ozone smell that only a laser printer can produce.
-
My inkjet is really, really cheap to run, with dirt cheap cartridges that last ages and excellent photo printing.
It's also about 12 years old.
I hope it never dies, though it does keep moaning that if I keep using out-of-date cartridges then it'll void the warranty.
-

Damn right. Also, you have the danger of this happening:
-
So that's what it looks like when a laser printer shits itself…

I wish I still had the picture, but at my last job we had an inkjet plotter explode like that. Blue ink all over the nearest wall and around on the floor. After we moved the printer we told people a smurf had been murdered there.
-
Whatever. You already bought your stuff.

love-love-love my Brother HL2230 (b&w, no wifi, no network, cheap, the inkjet is for color)
