as the one paying their budget i'd prefer if they lose it. and no i'm not joking about the $50k hammer. they really have bought such things.
It is generally believed that in a lot of those cases they use such accounting hijinks to veil the expenditures on skunk works projects.
Not that it makes it any less infuriating or annoying, but they are generally not buying $50K hammers.
-
oooooh... we're talking about Theft as a Servant or Embezzling or something like that.
Well… not really. It's more the massive misuse of expense accounts for stuff that is totally unrelated to the job of being an MP.

if they want funding for skunkworks project then bill it as such. bill it as "Classified Expenditure for Operation Overlord" or something, so at least we KNOW that they're spending on skunkworks and not so fucking idiotic as to buy a $50k hammer.
-
so at least we KNOW that they're spending on skunkworks
Yeah...I think you just answered why it ain't gonna happen.
-
yeah, i know. but still they should do that. hell i don't care if they use that line for all skunkworks projects. then we'd only know how much total, not how much to each project.
and it would make it easier to tell whose skimming something off the top by inflating prices of purchases on their expense reports.

Yes -- the TortoiseMerge default color scheme does fall on the bright side of things. I personally don't mind it all that much, but it's changeable at whim -- simply go to Settings under the application menu (i.e. TortoiseMerge's version of the Office menu) and look under the Colors tab. (It's not TortoiseGit's fault, specifically, either -- my copy of TortoiseMerge is from TortoiseSVN.)
Status: a project taking 45+ seconds to build and run is a real productivity killer. Sheesh.
You call that an eternity, eh?I have this one remote server I have to work with sometimes at work that's behind some slow network somewhere. Every time I save a file that's located on it, it takes 5-30 seconds.
We have to deal with that, on our dev server.TRWTF is working on someone else's dev environment, located halfway across the country from you.
Who cares? He was only trying to fulfill Slashdot’s weekly systemd flamewar quota..
It seems to have some ups (not having to invoke/bin/sh
50 gazillion times on boot) and some downs (binary logs). Binary logging is an annoyance, but probably could be made reasonable by doing something nice -- how about grabbing SQLite and having all the logs neatly broken out into a database schema from jump? ;)yeah, i know. but still they should do that. hell i don't care if they use that linbe for all skunkworks projects. then we'd only know how much total, not how much to each project.

Yeah -- making thing a which is top secret but generally OK look like thing b which is bad is a bad idea...

That really would not matter. We would still be explicitly exposing just how much we spend on black ops, etc. Also, due to interesting rules, just putting down that you budget $X for something is not enough. You have to have detailed accounting, etc. But, if you bend the rules (or, just mangle them all to fuck), and "buy" a few thousand $50K hammers you can do an end-run around the GAAP.
FWIW, this is why the CIA and NSA have actual businesses, to keep some of this money completely off the books. In the Vietnam era and CIA was caught smuggling drugs, that they supposedly did so just to have off the books money.

not sure what a duck island is

A less unkind take on it would be 'graft.'

We should track down everyone who has ever thought that autoplaying anything is a good idea and punch them in the bean bag.

do it twice, the second time with spiked brass knuckles and say that one was for me.

compromise and hit them on both heads with this?

Paint it red and yellow; why not?

One time (a few years ago) a colleague of mine left his PC unattended at work, so we took a screenshot of his desktop, and set it as the wallpaper. Then we studiously removed every desktop shortcut, closed all open applications, minimized the Start Bar, disconnected the mouse and keyboard. I think it took him about 15 minutes until he could work again.

the evil ideas thread is that way :arows.png:

-
what? i'm lazy!
-
Did that before. I seem to remember you could've just hidden the icons and set the start bar to autohide though... For bonus points you move it to the opposite side of the screen first (whichever side he uses regularly).

I did my job and Jeff'd a post to an existing topic: What's killing off "gameified" communities (yes I made a post of my tweets, suck it)

mine is by choice. :-D
This reminds me. A couple days ago, my two year old was playing with her plush Pinkie Pie. All of a sudden, Pinkie Pie was eating the "gold" out of a pirate treasure chest. Next, she was eating a Care Bear.

Is there a networked filesystem involved in this operation, by any chance? VS shouldn't be that spastic (although I've seen the occasional spate of wonkiness out of its debugger, and even a crash once if I'm recalling correctly, I've never seen it fumble such a basic operation before...)
