Spice is explained as being able to expand the mind
... And is used to predict the future so you can travel through space really really fast without hitting anything. No fantasy at all there.

They don't use computers, remember? What the spacer guild does is use their own brains as navigational computers, and use the spice to be able to manage all the calculations fast enough. Same as the mentats, really.
The "predict the future" thing is what characters say the spacer guild does, not what they actually do. Unless I'm really misremembering the book, Dune doesn't have any omniscient narrators.
-
That's just bullshit that people say happens but doesn't. The future very well could have dumb psuedo-science just like the present.
Huh? Guild navigators? Paul? Are you saying none of that actually happened in the book?
Was that in the first book?
Yes. It was first described when Jessica (and Alia, of course) went through the agony and got the wild Reverend Mother's Other Memories.

Well ok whatever. I didn't remember that.
Anyway, anybody who reads this debate now knows enough to know whether the book series is for them or not.

No, they explicitly look into the future to find a safe course.

You're really misremembering.

The biggest thing to know is that the books are really quite dense. Lots of dialog (including internal). They're like the opposite of Asimov, from that POV (I enjoy both styles, but YMMV). I've read them all several times and I pick up new things each time.
-
You're really misremembering.
Am I? I thought the "narrator" was the future-historian describing the events (a.k.a. Virginia Madsen, in the movie). And it spends a lot of time in Paul's head, as I recall. I don't recall an omniscient narrator.
It has been years since I've read it, though. If I re-read it, I wonder if it holds up, like Slaughterhouse Five, or if I'd think it was juvenile trash like Ender's Game.
-
No. Each chapter has an opening quote, often from "future historical texts," but it's an omniscient third person narrator. Not that he shares everything of course.
And future books confirm that the navigators use prescience. It's why one of them is able to shield conspirators (they hope) from Paul and vice versa.

I care not for later books, is the entire genesis of this conversation. Remember?
I'll phrase it this way: the first book is written in such a way that Blakeyrat, after reading it and years later, was under the understanding that it was firmly science fiction and took place in a universe where magic by and large did not exist.

Yes.
See, the problem with that, I bought this edition. It seemed like a good idea at the time. It was cheap, looked nice.
The problem is it's a 900 page softcover monstrosity. I just can't read the damned thing comfortably. I read HHGTTG from "Ultimate" version as well, but it was hardcover and manageable.
And yes, I still prefer paper books when it's literary works. My poor choice of edition is my own damned fault.

I have to agree. There seemed to exist a science in that universe that acted consistently - no fairy dust or wishing or dancing under moonlight while a comet flies over...
Once established the rules were kept - at least at the beginning.
This is one of the few movies I can think of that were improved by watching on TV rather on-screen.

Status: Why is my boss such a fucking useless assclown waste of space who's only purpose seems to be to consume oxygen (the cessation of which would be an improvement) and fill a gap in an organisational chart? He couldn't manage his way out of a fucking field if the hedges were cut down and the gate left open. Dangerously close to that point where I stop giving a shit about this job. Need to stick it out at least 6 weeks to get bonus paid, then if this carries on it's time to move on.

Status: shelled out hard earned cash for new bass strings. Wound them up, time to tune.
E string -- tuned fine, works well, awesome sound, beats my old rusty set by a hundred miles. A string -- same.
D string -- hm, weird, it doesn't seem to tune too well...
*tightens*
nope, still nothing...
*tightens*
no, that still doesn't work, maybe just a little bit...
*SNAP*!
FUCKING HELL FUCKING G STRING HOW THE FUCK DO YOU FUCK UP WHICH KEY YOU'RE TURNING YOU DUMB FUCK
So, um... yeah. Don't string your guitar while tired, folks.

That's the toned down version
I might even sort out a big topic of WTFs when I chill out a bit more.

Fuck Hewlett Packard and their fucking printers. Why do I need Desktop Experience installed on a server if I am attempting to install the basic drivers for your crappy printer? I don't need all the superfluous crap. I just want to print shit.
HP is rubbish.

I just want to print shit.
I wouldn't try that if I were you; you might get fired.

OK, yeah, that one was terrible

That would take a crappy 3-D printer...

I join the rage.
Of course, I'd just stick everything on CUPS, but I need to deal with remote printers in terminal sessions here, so that won't work.

It's a prison not a weird furry sex dungeon.

No, not at all ;)
It's just you're not part of our little triangle, s'all

We'll be good, I promise
Well, OK, I'll be good, and I think I can keep Blaze under control; @accalia though…

Do you want to go where they do?
He was sentenced there, anyway, whether or not they want.
-
Yeah, I was just surprised he seemed to want to go there too.
-
He'd have his own cell though, wouldn't he?
-
If it's like a UK prison, he'd have his own Playstation.
-
Playstation 3, surely?
-
So, um... yeah. Don't string your guitar while tired, folks.
At least guitar strings are cheap; I assume bass guitar is only mildly worse. I play cello and you could probably buy a new crappy-but-vaguely-playable guitar for the price of a really good set of our strings. (I don't even want to look at what strings for a double bass cost...)

Status: Working on my API project... From docs:
A MEMBER variable association is required if no READ accessor function is specified. This makes the given member variable readable and writable without the need of creating READ and WRITE accessor functions. It's still possible to use READ or WRITE accessor functions in addition to MEMBER variable association (but not both), if you need to control the variable access.
Ok, nice!
Q_PROPERTY(QString name MEMBER m_name NOTIFY nameChanged)
Huh, doesn't compile...
From forums:
I did a try and the MEMBER keyword works fine from QML. I can set, read and listen to the notify to an Object of your SH_User set as a ContextProperty to QML.
In C++ you cannot access the property via its name (it’s a shame), so you need a setter and a getter.
The MEMBER keyword is not creating getters and setters for you. It mearly changes the generated moc file to use the member variable directly instead of via its setters/getters.Well fuck you for that, and double fuck you for not making it clear in the docs!
Sigh... off to write a bunch of getters and setters...

There an HP Universal Print Driver. It covers all non-awful printers they make/made. It's small. It works. Use it.

Well, wouldn't you know, they just bought a new printer the other day (without asking anyone in IT)...

Roughly three times as expensive. Probably not as bad as a cello, which itself has a starting price of a third-world country, but still.

Two of which ["bugs"] weren't in the original scope.
Those "bugs" sound suspiciously like "features"...

Those "bugs" sound suspiciously like "features"...
I'm surprised any of the bugs were in the original scope - bugs tend to be accidentally introduced, not made part of the specification...

Once established the rules were kept - at least at the beginning.
The only thing that really struck me as inconsistent was some of the Tleilaxu stuff.
