proper MSDN is just "find the ISO you want in the website, if you paid for a subscription that qualifies you for it it's yourse, just hit the download button and it will download, we probably slipstreamed the product key into the ISO for you but in case we didn't hit the product keys button to get your product key while your browser downloads the ISO directly"
And that's... exactly how Imagine works for me. The OP is from 2013. I've never seen a download manager. There might be an option to use one but if so, I've never even noticed; just don't do that.

excellent.I will CAVEAT that, though, by saying that while the service provider I use now services thousands and thousands of schools, I did just look up my undergraduate university on it and couldn't find it. So I'll bet it depends on who your school uses. Good to know.

@Master_Chief Theft implies a loss of assets. Software piracy isn't theft. As much as you want it to, copying software infers almost no cost. And that's a huge difference because the wrongful view of piracy as "theft" is the primary reason why it's lionized. "You wouldn't download a car" etc etc.
I personally believe that there are a lot less "entitled pricks" in the world than most piracy-worriers seem to think, and a lot more "people who live in countries other than the US and Europe who can't afford said software." Which doesn't make a difference, because those people would not have purchased the software in any case. The only way it would make a difference is if those people have such good methods of piracy that they can spoof a legitimate account/key/whatever to download it off of the official servers, which costs them a little bandwidth.Piracy is a lot like drug testing for jobs in the US. It's ridiculously over-hyped so that secondary industries can be built off of it. "You don't want those slimy heroin addicts to work for you, do you?" ignoring the fact that if you can't tell the person has a problem, they probably don't, and that it's sadly easy to fool those drug tests as well via substitution. Much in the same way, most pirates aren't actually lost sales, and piracy countermeasures are both questionably effective at best and frequently inconveniencing for the paying customer. So why does it constantly get talked about? So software like SecuROM can get licenses, of course. An industry, once created, exerts its own influence to keep itself alive. Personally I don't know how you can arrive at any other conclusion after seeing how questionably effective anti-piracy measures are. I think I've said it before on this board, but the only thing that should be fretted over is if an entire company decides to just skimp out on licenses and pirates something like Microsoft Office. Obviously, that's just dodging the price and at severe penalty to the publisher and developer.

There are apparently "cracked" versions of my free, moddable game. I'm 99% sure they're viruses, but there is a nonzero chance that someone actually did try to remove Steam support from a game that is identical to another game except that it has added Steam support.

Would be neat to grab one and investigate. Not run, just unpack, decompile and compare to official.

You said it yourself, genious: "non-theft." Duuuh.
-
@blakeyrat said in DreamSpark, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love ThePirateBay:
So it's ok to pirate because getting the product for free legally is slightly inconvenient.
If you already have the license, it's doubtful that downloading a product from a torrent site and using it is actually "piracy".
Even if you don't legally have a license yet, as long as you're in position to get one for free, "pirating" the product has zero impact on the company (or anyone else) so it's hardly morally wrong.

Captain Obvious's statement apparently got truncated; Captain Obvious also states here, according to my notes, that law-and-order has nothing to do with obedience (existing licenses) nor conformity (whether it's socially acceptable). If you want to argue Heinz's dilemma vis a vis piracy, note that there are arguments on both side at each stage, you literally cannot "win" such an argument, so you may wish to do something better with your time. Just suggesting.

@Lorne-Kates But it's not. So why do you keep calling it that? They're two distinctly separate legal and moral ideas. Your silly rage doesn't really justify anything that you're saying.
I mean, this is hardly the place or community to say "You're being too pedantic," but I presume you know that...To answer your question, I've never even visited Slashdot, only heard the name in passing. I think I've made this argument on the internet in exactly two places, once for my mandatory college ethics course (which was on an intranet, so actually that doesn't really count), and on this site. Maybe if you think I've "copy-pasted" this argument from somewhere else, it's because other people share the same idea, because it's correct? Or you could believe that the internet is a big conspiracy out to piss you off about piracy.
Frankly, I don't know why you, or anyone else gets so pissed off about it. Like I said, it's not like any significant sales are being lost here. You are getting angry about nothing. Get it through your head. I do believe that the money and man-hours spent on "anti-piracy" measures could be spent making the product better, which would ensure more sales to begin with...

Mmmm....no. It seems to imply someone gaining access to something illegally, which could include a loss.
-
Damn, I didn't even realize how edgy I was four years ago. Can we bury this thread together with all my embarrassing childhood pictures?
(In other news: it's been a while since I needed anything from MSDNAA/Dreamspark/Imagine/whatever, but I seem to remember that they've massively streamlined the process since then, so there).

@boomzilla said in DreamSpark, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love ThePirateBay:

Theft may imply that, but that doesn't necessarily imply theft - walking around on another's (your?) lawn isn't theft, for example.
So here's v1.2 of the statement: theft is defined by a loss.

Yes. I said that theft implies illegal access, not that illegal access implies theft. I'm not sure why you bring this up.

It's the same wrong with slightly different words. Consider identity theft. Someone may have used my social security number to get a job. I didn't lose anything but it's still identity theft.

On another note, I do agree with your original statement, at least interpreted how I chose to interpret it. It's ludicrous when companies can't streamline the process of distributing their software so you don't feel like getting it from Pirate Bay would be easier. Sure, it isn't an excuse for piracy, but let's stop talking stupid "morality" shit and let's get pragmatic. You've a business. You want people to use your stuff. They're getting it from Pirate Bay instead. You can either streamline the process and add a bonus like superb customer service etc. and (hopefully) prosper or you can start screaming "piracy!" And "morality!" And "the law!" And never get around to getting these sales. At which point fuck you, you're not a good businessman. Quit.

BTW, I hate it when companies "round" (usually to .99, so not real rounding) prices after conversion so that it always costs more. This app is $1 or 3.99 PLN for you. This app is €1 or 4.99 PLN for you.
Apple, I'm looking at you!
