New improvement request:
For each emoji, list the users who used it and how many times. There is several ways this could be shown, either as some specific page, or as part of the hover text on emojis when reading a user's post (e.g.
:emoji: (42 uses, 2nd-most used emoji of that user, 13th most prolific user of that emoji
).We probably need to add some settings to control what's shown in the hover text -- both what you see when hovering another user's post, and what other users can see when hovering your posts.
This way if someone uses e.g. but usually uses , we know there is something... fishy going on.
We could also easily get the emojis that have never, or almost, been used. That would help maintaining our list of emojis.
For example by ensuring those unused ones are always much more numerous than used ones -- you wouldn't want users to get bored of the same old emojis, right?
The Discourse version yields a toaster "Sorry, you have used that emoji twice in a row. Please let other users get some use out of it first".

Indeed, I've never seen that emoji used. Probably because there aren't much good news to share nowadays.

have you heard about the pandemic?

I would like to reiterate my prior request for a group
People who are not Mike Patton
, and have therefore done so. As a person who is aware that they are not Mike Patton this is a matter of some importance to me.

-
@DogsB what makes you think my delusion has a Mike?
-
@topspin I don't necessarily think your delusion has a Mike. But @DogsB was talking about @Gribnit's delusion, and his delusion is so all-encompassing that I'd be surprised if it didn't have a Mike. And a Steve, and a Frank, and a Bob. I already know it has a Joe and a Brandon.

Also this. May be more appropriate as its own thread of course.

There used to be 2 Brandons even, but Joe sounds like one of @boomzilla's delusions.

@DogsB he rage quit. And deleted all his posts entirely.
There's a certain irony in that. Thanks for telling me.
It actually made quite a mess when he invoked the GDPR and all the posts including topics that he started just vanished into the electronic aether. But yes. it was ironic, In an anvil sort of irony.
GDPR? Its mostly anonymous public data on US servers? We just had to remove his non public stuff and and his username from his posts.
*YMMV and my place of employment might be on the hook if their legal counsel proves faulty.
The way it worked here was that everything he had ever written (once he invoked the so-called "right to be forgotten") had to be removed. Or was removed.
But even then, there's still some of his stuff around as quoted content in other people's posts. So, no, he's not completely "forgotten" yet. And no, I'm not saying anyone should review millions of posts to "clean up" that content.

Request: easier switching between alts. E.g. have a drop down "post as..." menu next to post submit button.
We can’t let discord outcompete us like this!
Though it’s nowhere near boomzilla levels of functionality – only four alts are supported.
-
@kazitor I have a forum platform that can out-compete on that score; alt-accounts are a core feature, and it's written in that batshit crazy language, PHP.
Bonus WTFery: there's half a dozen major reworkings of existing features all in progress at the same time.

Is that the Niagara falls development method? I.e., everything is going down the drain at the same time?
-
@cvi You've heard of CADT, right? It's CADOM instead.
-
@Arantor old men? Or just CADT's teenagers grown up?

@topspin I was going with Old Man because while chronologically I am not even 40 yet, I feel about 102. But basically yeah, I start a thing, realise it's harder than I thought, then start the next thing. One day I might finish them all.

You've probably just fully explained my tab hoarding problem.

Telling my whole life with his words, killing me softly with his post, ....
Except I'm already 40 + pandemic years.

Since I moved to placing all my tabs in groups I can actually see names again. I wonder how long it will last before the groups get to numerous to see their names?
-

My tab hoarding became a problem when I could no longer kill -9 firefox to have it show its "Recover session" screen that listed all tabs in an easily scrollable form. I could then untick the ones I didn't want to keep.
There's probably an easy solution to this that I'm missing, but ‍.
Filed under: Probably doing it wrong.

Some have forgotten the flower of speech, that walk through the garden - where I go, to defend misbegotten notions, while talking like this.

Per post, shader-based avatars, with the following inputs available as uniforms (constant inputs):
- Poster reputation;
- Date and time of post;
- Number of times post has been upvoted and downvoted;
- Poster and reader birth dates;
- Poster and reader GPS coordinates at time of posting and reading respectively;
- Poster and reader's BMIs, BACs, and body temperatures at time of reading and posting respectively;
- Number of emojis in post, with last two digits removed for privacy reasons;
- Poster id and username, I guess (not sure if technically feasible).

From reading that other thread, if you're using Chrome, all that data is currently "available". Not to you - just to Google.

I'm tired of seeing this icon:
Can we change that so it reads 69+ instead?
-
.unread-count[data-content="99+"]:after { content: "69+" !important; }

Nerd-sniping works.
-
@Zecc But also,
.unread-count[data-content="69"]:after { content: "Nice" !important; }
-
Indefinite quote nesting with continuously decreasing font size.

If we ever upgrade we're going to have to install an instance of redis.
-
Installing Redis doesn’t seem so hard?
-
@Arantor last time I made an effort to upgrade I got stuff upgrading iframely, which I guess we don't really need to upgrade. Anyways, it's a bunch of docker stuff and I've never fully gotten nginx set up correctly in my local vm so it's basically a big PITA and so you can imagine why it hasn't happened yet.
