I cropped mine from an image I found here that amused me. You may read into it whatever evil moustache twirling you feel necessary; upon legal advice, I will neither confirm nor deny tying maidens to railway tracks in old movies.
I need to find some way of getting the adapted Christmas version back from the busted machine where it currently resides.
if you have any idea of when you used it, we probably can rescue it on the wayback machine

I wanted to help people see if they were on a light or dark theme. Definitely not because I was playing around with transparency in paint.net
-
@Jaloopa Makes sense. I sometimes struggle to figure out whether I'm on a light or dark theme, and your avatar is a nice reminder, thanks!
-
Mine is from the 2000 video game Deus Ex, a character named Daedalus. In the era when AI was still just science fiction, this was one of my favorites. The face, the voice, the way it was introduced to you in-game, somehow it just stuck with me all these years
And now I have to install it again

It still is.

For what it's worth: I use dark theme, and I can read both of the lines in your avatar. Dark isn't straight-up black anymore.

@PotatoEngineer Hello, fellow Darkly user?
Nah, just Firefox.
I use Firefox at home, and Edge or Chrome at various works. I've finally admitted that the "login to your browser" thing is at least slightly useful, and I want there to be no possibility whatsoever that I accidentally mix up work and home.
-
@PotatoEngineer Um, okay. But your NodeBB theme under settings, is it called Darkly?

You expect me to know things?
Yes, it's Darkly under the NodeBB settings. Was the only name that sounded dark when I was fiddling with settings.

Cyborg also sounded dark, which is what I'm rolling for my "actually dark" theme.

is @LaoC 's avatar a reference to goatse and communism? I'm not sure if it's pro or against communism if so
(don't naively google for goatse if you're not aware what it is, NSFL stuff)
-
I liked the Sonic games back in the Genesis era, and would often take the second controller to help out. Tails was great for exploration and became my favorite character.
When web-based forums got going I regularly used this animated Tails icon as my avatar. It uses two whole frames to present the illusion of flight!
Animated avatars were banned at some point on this site, but existing ones were grandfathered in after (IIRC) a brief period of "Let's convert all of them to JPEG." or something.

I think you'll have to peruse the archives I can neither confirm nor deny any such connection.

For the sake of posterity, this is my last one. A fractal hamster.
My current one, as any American knows, is Alfred E. Neuman. He was the mascot of Mad magazine. I never bought a Mad poster, but they sold them. In particular, you could get 83 for $4, IIRC. I always wondered if anyone actually bought 83.
A bit of trivia is that he was most likely based on someone with Williams Syndrome. People with Williams Syndrome are mildly mentally retarded and resemble Alfred E. Neuman. Though mentally retarded, their verbal IQ is generally better than their performance (i.e. math) IQ. A few years back I was waiting for a bus and saw a young man who looked like he might have Williams Syndrome. When we got on the bus, I watched him out of the corner of my eye to see if he started chatting with strangers, which is one of the symptoms of the syndrome. Lo and behold, he did.
