@Rhywden you should take a moodily-lit picture of an entree!

  • @Polygeekery Hm, there's been a QR-based payment system spreading over restaurants around here lately, but nobody's crazy enough to require using it. Though last summer I was in this one pub where they accepted this app or cash, but no cards, and the purser just happened to explain to someone he likes that app because it makes things faster for everyone while cards tend to slow things down too much so in busy hours.

  • @Polygeekery Sounds crazy. My favorite restaurant puts QR codes on the bill, but you can go up front and pay normally if you want or just leave cash. Their menus are one laminated page, double-sided, that live in stands at the tables.

If there's one thing that a business should try to make easy for you, it's giving them money.

This idiocy needs to stop. Online menu is fine to look the place up and decide if you want to go there. But requiring your guests to bring their own devices just to see the menu is.. there's no other word for it: retarded.

Slurp. The menu is delivered through a third-party marketing site who will (try to) set cookies on said devices and read "required diagnostic information". What, when, how many people, how long you looked - everything is on the table

One restaurant I know will supply you with a tablet for reading the menu. I can't quite remember if you can place your order with them, or if the staff numbers are simply high enough that that's never a question anyway.

It is a very very good restaurant, and charges appropriately.

    Maybe so, it's still retarded.
The surveillance idiots can "make money" with that information all they want, the restaurant owner is still going to lose money over pissing off non-idiotic customers with this bullshit.

Yeah, happened to me twice. Bot times I told them "this is exceptionally stupid" as I was walking out.
Now I just ask if there's a paper menu immediately when I see this QR crap. If there isn't I leave.

Texas Roadhouse has gotten this pretty correct so far - they still have physical menus and a server to come and take your order, etc. Once your order is in the system, the kiosk on the table lights up with a "Pay Now" button that you can use whenever you feel like it, or if you don't then the server will eventually come back to cash you out as per the usual. And the kiosk has games you can rent to entertain the littles too.

  • Fucking MS weboutlook shit. ☠🗲🖕

I'm pretty sure they changed something in the past few days. Previously you could click on e.g. "Inbox" to get back to the Inbox list after opening an email out of the Inbox.

Not anymore. Open up an email in the Inbox. You can now hammer that Inbox link and nothing will happen. You can click on any other folder to get its listing (and then you can go back to the Inbox to get the Inbox listing). Or you can click the obnoxious "X Close" button somewhere hidden. But not on the Inbox link.

Who the fuck thought that was a good idea? Fire them out of a cannon into an Uranus-intersecting orbit.

  • Given this will be an expiring video I don't think it deserves its own thread and I don't see anything more specific so it goes here:

Plane Crash Hurts Cows Feelings! Pilot is Alive! – [18:30..31:06] 31:06
    — Probable Cause: Dan Gryder

TL;DW: Small airplane made an emergency landing in a field pasture. The rancher now demands a compensation for the emotional damage to his cows that were grazing nearby (but nowhere near so close they'd get hurt).

Yes they do have photos. In the major newspapers in their restaurant reviews.

  • @Bulb said in WTF Bites:

cards tend to slow things down too much so in busy hours.

Recently I was on a skiing trip with some family. We went to a bar on top of the slopes (not really my thing usually, far too expensive and when I'm out there I want to ski, not have an average-tasting overpriced drink, but whatever).

Because it's in the middle of nowhere, their (mobile) phone line was very patchy and as a result the cards didn't go through (almost everyone here only has debit cards which have to phone home, and taking imprints of the card is never done, if that ever was here). Or rather, it did randomly go through... sometimes a few minutes later... or not...

My cousin was queuing for all of us and spent maybe 20 min trying to pay. There was a huge queue before and after her, of course. We all finished our drinks before she could pay. In the end she gave up and came back to our table (and her drink!), by which point the rest of the group gather all the cash that we happened to have and someone else went back to pay. It wasn't quite enough, but almost, and the manager accepted all that and even gave us free coffees in addition (he clearly was stressed by the whole thing, which you can understand!).

Amusingly, the person from our group who did this second round went with all cash and jokingly said while leaving "you'll see, not only will he accept our lower-amount in cash, but I will get all of us free coffees!" So when he came back with the coffees, he was very proud of himself and kept bragging about it as he distributed them around... and then he noticed that he had managed to get one coffee for everyone, except for himself!

Back to the main story, we all left thinking the matter was settled. But the next day, my cousin noticed that actually the purchase had gone through on her card!

So she went back to that bar, and had another lengthy chat with the manager who apparently couldn't reimburse her immediately so he said he'd do that "right away at the end of the shift." Which I think (I kind of lost track of the story there...) didn't happen, the last time my cousin mentioned it she was saying the charge hadn't been reversed, and we were all telling her that at that point her best shot was to call her bank, get the transaction blocked and hope things wouldn't get too weird/ugly/costly from there.

So yeah, cards are not always great. Cash is good. I love cash.

I pretty much never use the rich formatting stuff. Spacing and linebreaks seem to be preserved. Maybe next time I'll remember to do that and use the code thingy.

Does your Teams use a different character set than your code editor?

Could be. I don't see anything in Teams that tells me what encoding it's using, but it should be all simple stuff. Editor uses UTF-8. Seems to happen in both Oracle SQLDeveloper and DBVisualizer.
