That error code is meaningless. It's literally "Microsoft Installer: Sorry, something went wrong." You're going to have to dig deeper to find the real reason...

I remember spending two days looking for a solution for a failing update. Error code meant "security/authorization error".
Kilometer long logs, diagnostic tools, FixIt scripts, safe mode, etc. Nothing helped. Finally I found a reply on some obscure forum "uninstall SonicTechWave sound firmware*, reinstall after update". So I tried uninstalling my headphones driver - update installed. No, I don't have SonicTechWave firmware.
No, the update had nothing to do with sound.* not a real name

@MrL Well, considering you can't install fonts if your firewall is disabled, I'm not surprised
-
@TimeBandit Hardly surprising, fonts have some privilege inside Windows (I forget the exact details but there's crap that executes at higher privilege than it really should because Windows has so much more running in privileged execution contexts than it really should) and the point of requiring privilege is in case of defending against bad fonts.
-
That would justify popping a UAC prompt when you install a font, yes.
Not disallowing font installation completely when your firewall is turned off.

defending against bad fonts.
I understand (some of) the reasons this is a thing, but I kinda hate that we live in a world where fonts are complex enough to even have the concept of being malicious. I mean...bad looking fonts are one thing. But fonts that are a security risk? Stop the world, I'd like to get off. Or so I'd say, except I lost any hope of it being a better world long ago and am merely numb.

At least it still sometimes tells you that there was an error. It seems to me that the modern error handling paradigm is "ignore it and hope the user won't notice".
-
@Benjamin-Hall well yes, but it’s not that they’re a security risk first and foremost. It’s that Windows doesn’t do nearly enough checking for validity on something that is privileged.
Remember we live in a world where one of the world’s largest and most profitable companies can’t figure out how to secure printing from being various types of complete system takeover.
-
@Arantor We're 500 years (or more than a thousand, depending on the exact definition) since printing was invented and we collectively haven't figured out how to make printers not be terrible.
It's not that they can't. It's that they can't publicly admit that it can't.

@Applied-Mediocrity the original movable type things were reasonable. Modern printers are an abomination from hell.
But yet Linux still is provably more secure than Windows on the subject of printers.

Looks like this is a Visual Studio thing. I'm not being offered those updates on my non-VS machine. Just have to wait for VS2022 to release on Nov 8 I guess...

@dcon you probably don't get them offered because you don't have those particular .NYET runtimes installed.

The fact that it is possible for "bad fonts" to exist is truly mind boggling.

@Gąska Last time I bought a printer (Xerox Workcenter 6015) I had to download and install a driver to make it work under Windows.
When I rebooted in Linux and looked to install the same printer, it was already discovered and working

: I understand, but our kitchen shuts down if any ingredient is missing.I had an Epson color inkjet printer that used 6 ink cartridges, black plus various other colors. The idea is supposed to be, you only have to replace the colors that you use.
A very nice, good quality printer, except for one thing. I almost never printed anything other than black text, but the color cartridges ran out almost as fast as the black.
Because all colors mixed together = black.
Nice little scam to sell more ink.
-
@El_Heffe Colour inkjets typically have a black which is not intended to make a nice, full black by itself, but only to support the colour cartridges in making better dark colours, especially when printing photographs.

Possibly true, but irrelevant. There is no reason why they can't use a black that is "black enough" to stand alone.
Just another way to force people to buy more ink.
-

Yup, "Rich Black" can be quite the waste of ink if that's what it's doing. The inkjet printers I've owned let you print using "black only". You can't stop them from wasting color ink since they're still going to use all of the inks clean the print heads, but it's something.
Because all colors mixed together = black.
In printing typically mixing all of the non-black colors gets you a dark brown.

If that was true, then printing nothing but black text wouldn't use any of the color ink.
Either they're mixing in the colored with the black, or, it's being stolen by the color ink fairy.

With @El_Heffe going all-in on being a wanker, I suppose there’s no better time for this:
Top row: printers.
Bottom row: the self-professed expertise of someone who just learned about CSS colour syntax. What do you mean “row”? The top and bottom are clearly identical…

@kazitor PANTONE != sRGB. This story breaking exclusively on WTF News at 11.
-
@TwelveBaud Preposterous!
I have it on good authority that sRGB is the fundamental basis for all colour, and that some approximation to commerically-available CRT phosphors of the 1990s is the very definition of what should be considered “blue.”

As I said before, Ink Jet Printers normally do mix colors in when you print black. (Often called Rich or Photo Black.) You have to tell them to not do that using a driver setting, if your printer gives you one. They also use all the colors to clean the print heads when you turn the printer on and/or if they haven't printed for a while. It's a downward spiral.
None of that changes how mixing real-life CMY inks on real-life paper, both with real-life impurities, typically results in "not-quite-black". It's one of the reasons basic process printing is CMYK.

If you tell the printer driver to really work in monochrome, it will only use the main black tank. That's also a lot faster.

Nothing should display PNGs in that color format; PNG only supports RGB.

@Parody what a dumb format. Does it at least support ordering pixels from bottom to top!?

@Gąska what about right to left? Or hexagonal pixels?
