Go an email from corporate IT that I have to upgrade to 1909 by April 13th.
The gears of progress slowly grind on.
I'm not sure you're entirely ready to be introduced to the 20th century.

@Gribnit says what?

Say what you want about telegraphs, but at least you never need to install software updates on them.

Actually you can get great results with a new patent repeater.

Absolutely refuses to send a 1650x1080 signal to the monitor with that resolution. Display settings says it's doing that. No matter what resolution I set the monitor throws up a complaint saying that the resolution is out of its range, gimme 1650x1080 (but doesn't say what it thinks it's getting).
Tried replugging the dock, replugging the cable in the dock, restarting, disabling/enabling. No joy.
-
They don't support dyslexic monitors yet
(I assume you meant 1680x1050).
-
@Zerosquare indeed.

Or change up the stimulus type. Sometimes a slap beats a tickle.

Dug into the "Advanced Settings" and was able to switch from 59 Hertz to 60 and now it works.

at some point between Windows 7 and Windows 8, the designers at Microsoft suffered a massive head injury and forgot pretty much everything they knew.
QFT.
Windows 7 was solid and stable. Everything since then has been crap. I would still be using Win 7 but I built a new computer at the end of 2019 and couldn't find any working USB 3.0 drivers.
The motherboard vendor has drivers on their website. That don't work.
Fortunately, entirely by accident and good luck, I decided to install version 1809, which still suffers from all the shitty design flaws of all Win10 versions, but overall works reasonably well, and is 1 or 2 percent less crap than all the other versions, and is a LTSB version so it is still being updated.
Is it LTSC or LTSB? Microsoft suffers from such severe ADHD these days, they can't settle on anything and leave it alone for more than a few months.

I was about to say I've never seen a device with multiple USB-B ports, but my KVM switch has 4xA and 4xB ports. No C though.

status: one of the effects of "fast startup" is that Windows can think it has an unreasonable uptime.
Seen here, a unit I just booted after spending a year on the shelf...
-
@Tsaukpaetra A hibernated system is still "on".
-
It's sad that @Tsaukpaetra has to resort to cheating to achieve decent uptimes.
-
@Zerosquare I don't think even that helps; he still needs to be rebooted every couple of days.

@HardwareGeek the amazing thing is not how well the bear dances.

I thought most of his complaints were that he couldn’t find opportunities for achieving “decent uptimes”, n’est pas?

FWIW: swapfile.sys is where Windows puts UWP/packaged/blah apps when they are put to sleep/hibernated/suspended/whatever.

Yeah I specifically disabled that, but I was mentioning it because a page file and swap file are used interchangeably...

But then I would have people asking me how to Linux.

It would be, but I'm not a mega-corporations and have no ability to drop thousands of money for what is effectively digital signage.

Sounds like Linux or even using a Raspberry Pi instead would be a better option. There's almost certainly something available so you can get it to the point that someone just needs to pop the pictures on there and off they go.
-
@loopback0 yeah very. Windows ain't gonna sweeten that road any better than a Pi app can. It's switching rasters.
Windows may let them fuck with it so they can get porn on it easier, tho.

You would think? But the closest I found was some paid Cloud thing that requires a subscription and doesn't work for my needs.
