    @Jaloopa no, you can only buy a license for unspecified period of time to maybe sometimes watch stuff if they allow you.

    That was your "Welcome to Texas".

  • @dcon I've had plenty of Texas thunderstorms worse than that, closer and louder, including one with a tornado warning in the middle of the night (that my phone couldn't be bothered to tell me about until the next morning), but they've had warning — thunder in the distance before thunder nearby. This morning's storm, that was the only thunder in the entire storm (at least the only one that was noticeable over the general background noise of rain, furnace, computer fans, cars driving by, etc.), and it came as a complete surprise.

  • Status: The price I pay for printed statements...

    The plan was to deposit new job's paychecks into a new account and transfer ~80% to my old account for bill payment. Well it turns out to be more difficult than expected. I knew it would be impractical to withdraw and immediately deposit thousands in cash. Turns out I can't do direct transfers either. I mean, technically I can, but only over the phone, only three figures at a time, and only by paying a $25 fee per transfer. But I can drive out the the main branch, during a small window on the weekend, and have the bank issue a check to me, which I can then deposit wherever I want.

  • @Zenith If the accounts are at the same bank, why wouldn't you be able to transfer money directly between them? If they're at different banks that kind of makes sense, but three figures seems like a tiny limit.

  • @hungrier Different credit unions entirely. I understand there's a physical limit on cash in the ATM but I've never hit a limit on direct transfers.

    Hehe, my bank let's me set up "automated bill pay" in which they will mail a check to the payee. Which can totally be myself. I think it's free too. Then I can mobile-deposit it.

    It's somewhat amusing to make Rube Goldberg mechanisms...

  • @Zenith I don't know if you have anything like e-transfers in the US but in Canada you can send up to $3000 per day (as well as some additional limits over longer periods of time), for free to anyone.

    e: As long as the recipient has a bank account with online access. It also has to be a participating bank, but I don't think there are any banks that can't into e-transfer

  • @Tsaukpaetra Yeah, I was hoping to have the second bank transfer $1 every month to a third bank to satisfy their stupid DD requirements but that really seems like a stretch now. I might just use the third bank for one of those sell-your-own-art T-shirt sites and hope that counts as a DD. That's not really a long term plan; likely just to run out the clock on the early closure penalty.

    Edit: I was also hoping for a way to deposit this last stimulus check so I could keep it as souvenir. Turns out everybody wants to go app-only for that and fuck you if you want to use regular online banking.

    My bank limits me to 8 digits and possession of the bank card. And that's relatively recent; for ages the limit was 4 digits.

    Online, I still use the card+pin with a special security device, or I could use my phone with a separate pin. Other banks use one-time-use tokens or passwords; I do not know their complexity limits.

  • Considered Harmful

    Ours did away with passwords altogether almost two years ago. It's either token device or a phone app with two 8 digit keys, one for login, one for confirmations of payments. Recently fingering and facials also appeared, but I haven't bothered. The login can also be used for gubmint and many utility sites. And the other way round - gubmint's electronic signature thingamajig can be used in banks.

  • @PleegWat For in-person transactions where you possess the bank card, our limit is still 4 numeric digits, and only for "special, only available by request European-compatible" cards. For the most part you can just bwip it contactless with no further interaction, and where you are required to provide another factor, any scrawl on a PIN pad's signature tablet will do, whether or not it looks like the signature on the card, or whether or not it looks like a signature at all.

    Another of those US banking inventions I've never seen here. Contactless, sure. No pin up to certain limits then with pin above that. Abroad I've also seen terminals which don't do contactless & pin and want a switch to chip & pin when you hit the limit for contactless.

  • @PleegWat Reminder: Chips only became "mandatory" in the United States two years ago. And some early (2012ish?) versions of contactless weren't EMV but simply wireless delivery of magstripe data.

    Ok, doesn't quite scan right. But I think that demon is dead. No thanks to iOS, which makes scrolling the screen so that a particular element stays in view when the keyboard comes up (and the back when it goes away) needlessly complicated, with particular structures (UIView with one child, which is a UIScrollView, which has one child, another UIView) and nasty nasty constraints that are mostly WAGs based on range of screen sizes, plus a bunch of random calculations and getting event notification in the right place (and removing it again). And the documentation has changed, so most of the answers out there no longer work. Or are for something slightly different--just enough so that it fails miserably.

Therefore, I say, if we can do any of that, we can also have some nookie.

    I hope they're not doing the half-hidden timer thing once more? It's a good challenge for those who know the PnP rules or for an n+1 playthrough, but me, I want all the sidequests. Only when setting the password. After that, you'd better be aware that the password has been truncated or you'll never log in again. Well, not unless you get the customer services helpline to read you out what your real password is over the phone. (UK banks used to be just as awful, but some smart lawyers got wind of it and courts started to systematically hit the banks with the full liability for the ensuing frauds which was both costly and embarrassing, so their shit was put somewhat in order.)

    OK, the real code has both a lot more documentation comments and a whole lot of citations. But fuck me, Python's a ghastly mess under the covers…

    The code is used to mark a class that's working as an interface so that it is an error to apply that to any class that is not a subclass of a different (main) model class, unless that class is also an abstract class (in which case the constraint will apply to its subclasses), a constraint we can't do by other, more obvious means because of problems with resolution of the Method Resolution Order solver. It's a messy problem, but this lets us just say:

    @require_subclass(MainModel)
    class FooInterface(metaclass=AbstractBase):
        # abstract method definitions, etc...

    and then things Just Work. Mostly.

    Because the way that my colleagues had chosen to do it involved overriding __new__ and that's just Bad when you stack them together. (I don't bother with such constraints, but some of my cow-orkers love their little type restrictions.) Like this, they get to say what they mean instead of just how to implement it.

    The general pattern is that the interfaces mark extra capabilities/protocols that the main model classes can opt into (e.g., they know how to synthesise their configuration data programmatically and remotely rather than needing a raw data blob to be moved over the network, an orders-of-magnitude acceleration strategy). That's actually sensible. But there's a lot of other things going on in the type hierarchy so we can't do it by simple linear inheritance.

    Physical items take up physical space, which for a store or warehouse has its own cost. If something doesn't sell at full price, it's better to sell it marked down and get some revenue from it, rather than keeping it around taking up space that could be used for something that sells.
