WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else

@Tsaukpaetra If I had to guess, the target system's buffers fill up at around the top of the mesas in your graph, shoot the TCP window in the head as it flushes, and then once the flush is underway TCP slowly ramps back up until the buffer's full again.

Windows' file buffers, actually, the green graph has smoothing. But yes, there's also some slowness from TCP.
But still worse than I'd expect for gigabit or even 100m connection...
-
@Tsaukpaetra Like I said, I don't think it's the network connection, it's the spinning rust or van de graaf generator on the other side.

No spinning rust involved, and I've shut down all the interferation equipment since it's cold enough that passive cooling is all that's needed.

Though I did just create a VHD backup of it, planning to test an
upgradechange to Windows 10 tomorrow.Any piece of advice?

@Zecc License-wise, if you're taking advantage of the free upgrade offer, be advised that it does not come with downgrade rights. I have no idea what it'll do to your Windows 7 activation if you decide to rollback.
If you've obtained a W10 license some other way, then W7 should be unaffected. Godspeed, keep calm and carry on, and while there's a lot of crap that gets installed on first login (Candy Crush Saga!!), all of it can be removed.
-
@TwelveBaud said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:
all of it can be removed.
Some only with a special incantation of PowerShell
-
@TimeBandit Most of it can be done from the start menu and/or setup, it's just easier in PowerShell as it's all in one go.

(other than "don't")Just get on with it. 10 is better than 7 overall.

Maybe, but for how long?

Saying it again and again won't make it true.

I hadn't put any thought into the licensing. Ideally I'd like to keep the W7 VHD for use in a virtual machine.
Is it possible to change the product key during before activation of W10 (will it even need it if it's an update?), if I buy a new W10 license? I assume they no longer sell W7 keys, and having two instances of an OS activated with the same key is a no-no.Heh, at some point there's diminishing returns compared to just doing a fresh install of W10; but I'm trying to avoid having to install and configure everything again :weary_harthog:

I don't completely disagree, but my bas-relief UI and general lack of nagging will be sorely missed.

You can change the key pre-activation but as it's an upgrade you might need to block it from the Internet during setup to stop it activating straight away.

(other than "don't")Once you've gotten the license confirmed activated ("Digitally entitled" or whatever), clean install.
Upgraded machines have more ghosts than typical, I have found...

Focus Mode permanently on is a blessing!
Edit: Awww, only 20 notifications? I bet it just forgets the oldest in a rolling window...

Fake. Windows 10 isn't the kind of OS that says "please" when it comes to reboots.

@Tsaukpaetra You're not using one of those new Samsung QVO drives, are you?

To bypass the linking to Microsoft Account:
- Click "Back"
- Disconnect from internet
- Click "Next"
- Create local account
- Re-connect internet

No. Some old TLC drives that would still be capable of saturating a gigabit link.

I have 3 - there's nothing about how Windows 10 handles displays that's worse than 7 IME.
-
@loopback0 but there's a lot that it handles better than 7. My post was directed at @topspin.

I only have one display and I've now updated from 7 to 10.
I'd like to hear a reasonable explanation why it changed the display to a lower resolution if it supports the same resolution as before out of the box.
Um... "supports". Why is there a thick black border all around?
(Fake edit after display driver update) Okay, border is gone now. Thanks for messing up all my desktop icons though!
-
Would have been cool if all my apps pinned to the start menu had remained there.
It did remember I like the taskbar of the right side of the screen and it remembered my pinned apps there, so there's that!

Yup. Working as expected!
-
Seriously, it's not 1999 anymore. can't the monitor, graphics card and OS manage to negotiate the most appropriate resolution among themselves? Fucking amateurs.
Regardless, during installation it told me at least 5 times it was searching for updates.
Why were any updates required after first boot?
-
Btw, not that anyone asked, but I "dealt" with licensing by using the product key that came with the Win7 DVD and calling it a day. Trying to figure out their licensing reminded me why I usually stick to either buying a new computer with a new OEM license, or having someone else deal with the product key acquisition.
I gave up on keeping the Windows 7 license valid.

Maybe they'll finally finish moving the old control panel
-
@TimeBandit depending on how they define “rejuvenate”, that sounds like they’ll finally complete the move from the Windows
103.11 look all the way back to 1.0.
-

Nah, that was Windows 8:
And the even Windows 3.11's GUI design is better than Windows 10's.

Without reading TFA, pure speculation: The main change will be a new start menu, and 99.9% of users will tell the current start menu is better.

This new taskbar feature will also require Microsoft’s Chromium-based Edge to be installed on a PC. That means any link you click within the feature will force you into Edge to read it
-
@TimeBandit Even the widgets in macOS open links in the user's browser of choice.
-
@TimeBandit Didn't the EU already slap Microsoft for that kind of move?
-
@TimeBandit Why don't they bring back Active Desktop while at it?

You can of course disable this new taskbar feature, and Microsoft says it will be an ad-free experience.
