@Zenith so these assessments are useful for something after all.

It sounds as ridiculous as you would think.

Status: Ended up having to work today at my second job. And just as my hands were starting to heal from the last round of working... As usual the hand sanitizer bottle had got all clogged up and sprayed a bunch of foul-smelling liquid all over me when prodded.
Now is some dead time so can write more on my RPG system. Yay! Had some good ideas coming after talking to my DM yesterday.
Yesterday I also reassembled my PC. Unfortunately my extra SATA card seems broken so I have to get a new one. Entering its firmware to set up a RAID did not work as it kept glitching out, and the BIOS of the computer didn't even want to acknowledge its existence in the list of hardware. Also managed to bang my knuckle straight into one of the component pins on it, which started hurting a lot this morning for some reason.

There is only one "design pattern" that matters in software engineering: put logically distinct pieces of code into separate units that are as self-contained as possible. Everything else is wankery.

Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not all out to get you.

@anonymous234 Put all bikes in appropriately colored sheds. Unless they're in more than one color, in which case

Highly recommend against that. Software raid is now more reliable, just as fast, and easier to recover if there's a problem.

Calculating...
I'd be kicked from the alliance probably, the current time-limited event in the MLP game I've already got most of what I need, just wait a few days before that "unable to play" plz. Pokemon? Well, I involuntarily hiatus'd for two years, what's another three weeks?

I'd say the command and state patterns are great for what they're designed for, and following them closely is almost always better than figuring something out on your own. The visitor pattern is a good workaround for lack of tagged unions. But yes - most patterns are little more than a more formal way to say "don't be an idiot".

For @Tsaukpaetra, there's no if; it's when there's a problem.

I avoid staring at them. Seeing souls is kinda freaky.

@anonymous234 Someday I might bother to memorize what "SOLID" stands for. They wouldn't tell me in an interview, showing the acronym was more important than the concept. Turns out I actually did 4 of the 5.

Out of pocket or insurance? If out of pocket, did you try to negotiate?

Wired: "convention over configuration!"Work for a while on a platform with 20k+ lines of configuration (no exaggeration) and you'll grow to appreciate how nice it is to have some reliable invariants about the environment.
But really, it's a false dichotomy. Configurability is a gradient, and the best solution is a balance between them. On the far end, you get the inner-platform effect.

Insurance. They kindly applied the balance to my deductible ($1500).

For @Tsaukpaetra,there's no if; it's when there's a problem.Drives are rated in Mean Time Between Failures, so that's more of a universal truth. Entropy consumes all.

Well, at least the new hire will have their machine operational when they start. I had to wait 4 hours the day I started.
Should follow up on this:
The machine was still missing software. Had severe performance issues when running anything. IT somehow managed to uninstall outlook while troubleshooting the issue. Eventually they replaced the entire machine.

Your 5mm-tall drive is flapping around inside your laptop so you're making it thicker so it doesn't do that?
-
@Tsaukpaetra yes. But only temporarily - I just want to make one clone. But I'm still waiting for USB3-to-SATA-6+15 adapter that only yesterday I realized that I need. It just need to withstand two 180s and running there untouched for half a day.

Company policy is that, when you schedule time off, you schedule a "meeting" in Outlook (with availability marked as "free" so it doesn't book anyone else's time) with all who may be concerned.
I apparently requested responses from all who are invited to my PTO "meeting" (a mailing list with ~200 people).
Oh, the toasters.
