"Confirmed cases" for my city is skyrocketing. Meanwhile, the total death count is going down. Either COVID deaths are temporary and they got better, or something was incorrectly being counted as COVID deaths and they're being retroactively removed from the statistics. The local news showed some health statistics, and something like 80% of our deaths were people over age 65, and 100% of the deaths were people with multiple severe health issues prior to COVID.
EDIT: For an example of the pre-existing severe health issues, one of the deaths was a friend's stepfather. He was in his late 80's, in hospice care, and was already dying prior to COVID. It shortened his life by a matter of weeks.

No significant uptick in cases despite opening into phase 1 (and beyond, in Georgia's case) for more than 2 weeks:

@Benjamin-Hall How successful has the reopening been, though? If people haven't resumed their pre-lockdown level of activity, that doesn't seem terribly meaningful.

With the insane unemployment you've got going, people can't go back to doing what they were doing before because a large part of the population simply don't have a job to return to. This also makes them unable or less willing to spend money on doing frivolous stuff.
That they've lost their jobs at least to some degree also depends on businesses going under, so people can't visit those businesses, because they are no longer.
And with the government spending all the money on aid for unemployed or businesses on the way to tank, and probably not a single penny on starting up new businesses in the gaping holes where the ones that went under was, well, that money will just burn up and not do much at all to get the economy going again.

It's been more than zero, and more than enough (by the previous standards) to cause "big scary spikes". Which haven't shown up. Heck, the pundits were predicting mass deaths from Wisconsin's in-person primary 5 weeks ago...that hasn't even caused a ripple.
Really, we need to stop with the worst-case-scenario fear-mongering. Because people (myself included) are tuning it out and assuming it's just more crying wolf. Give the range, admit the uncertainties. Act like honest, humble people trying to do the right thing for everyone. I know that's hard for politicians and media figures, but can't we at least try?

I have some FB friends in Florida. Some of them have been very Karen-ish* since before the reopening and have been complaining pretty loudly about worse behavior despite the continued lack of major outbreaks or spikes.

It's funny to watch that scene with Polish voice over (and I guess most other languages) - since it's McRoyal in Poland too, they've had to make up their own translation of QP. They went with "ćwierćfunciak z serem" - pretty much a literal translation, except it sounds very cheesy (no pun intended), as if they intentionally went for the "how do you do fellow kids" meme.
Also - the standard McRoyal (in Poland) already has cheese, so you don't get to say "with cheese" when ordering. So the way Jules puts emphasis on "with cheese" makes the scene even more funny.

Sure but no-one orders the "Quarter Pounder with Cheese" they order the "Quarter Pounder" and get the cheese anyway because it also already comes with cheese unless you explicitly ask otherwise. To get one without you'd need to order "Quarter Pounder without cheese".

Then they should update the menu already so people who just came in to the country would know. It was hard enough to figure out what the acronym QP expands to...

A spike will happen immediately after people go outside again.
But it will take several weeks to show up in the data. Hospital admissions probably lag by around 2 weeks, and deaths by about 3. (There was a medical statistician on the radio the other day on a show that's been great about debunking the bullshit, especially the BS from HMG, and he was saying they reckoned that deaths lagged infections by 20 days on average.)

It's like being 16 again, gas is cheap and I'm grounded.

only about 20 of the 64 values are used
All 64 possible values do have meaning, but some of them are redundant, doubtless as a form of error correction.
It most certainly is a form of error resistance. In particular, most SNPs turn out to be non-harmful because the ones that are most chemically likely tend to have the least effect, either zero or at least not greatly changing the chemistry of the resulting protein (because the amino acid is usually at least still polar, non-polar, acidic, or basic where the original one was the same). The places where a change would tend to be especially bad (the one I know of relates to where to put cysteine, as that forms cross-chain links) tend to also be rather highly conserved; mutagenic free radicals tend to affect other base pairs.
It's all fascinating stuff.

Was it always that way? If Nelson Mandela ordered a quarter pounder, would he get it with cheese or not?

According to the underlying study, "only" 33% of people are asymptomatic carriers.
One out of every three people who tested positive for antibodies was asymptomatic and did not realize they had contracted the virus. The director of the National Epidemiology Center, Marina Pollán, also noted that 43% had experienced a sudden loss of the sense of smell.
Take with a grain of salt, however, I couldn't find info regarding the test itself and it's a preliminary result.

Or do it like someone I used to know. The one time I went into a McDonald’s with him, he ordered a Quarter Pounder, and when we got to our table, lifted off the top piece of bread, took a paper napkin and wiped everything off the burger except the meat. He then replaced the bread and began eating. The rest of us sat there thinking, “WTF?” and when someone asked, he replied, “This is quicker than ordering one without."

Maybe over there. Over here, you order it that way. In fact, that's what it's called on the menu:

I don't know what would happen if you just asked for a quarter pounder. They might ask if you want cheese. I'd imagine if you don't specify "with cheese" they'd ask if you want cheese.

If you just ask for a Quarter Pounder, you get the QPC. If you ask for a Quarter Pounder without cheese during day shift you probably get what you want. If you order when the high school staff is working, there’s an 80% chance that the order taker won’t understand there’s a difference and you’ll get the QPC.

@izzion In the past a couple of times I've been to McD with my brother. I'd ask for a cola regular. He'd ask for light. When the order was ready we'd ask which one was light. The answer would invariably be "I'll make you new ones".

Of the ones that I frequent around here all still have self serve (though two of them did away with it for awhile, it is back to self-serve now), they just hand out the cups/straws/lids now. Several of them have notes about requesting a new cup if you want a refill (no idea why that would matter)

I read something about the details of our local rules yesterday. You have to keep 1.5m distance. But it's illegal to congregate in groups of more than 3 even when keeping that distance - the distance limit is only relevant if you meet by chance.
And the €390 (IIRC) fine isn't a fine. It's a punitive settlement, and since it's over €100 it goes on your criminal record.

@Zerosquare The system is also clearly developed using the ‘sweep it under the rag’ approach to old cruft. Logic is regularly repurposed for use completely different from the original by running it and then running another on top of it to patch the results. There are several layers of such hacks on top of each other.
Self modifying code and overlaying data and code is often seen in demo scene hacks.
Well, us being a tech demo that ended up being pushed into production unchanged would surely explain the state of humanity.
