While we've derailed to books, the Witcher series so far is more entertaining than expected. It strikes a good balance of fantasy and humor, and I'm impressed at the quality of the translation.

Do you like copy-pasted if-else constructs? Because that's most of the code!
Is where I know there should be a better way, but I can't remember enough about ActionScript to know if there was one available...

There's quite a bit I haven't read. I read it haphazardly when I happen upon a book in a used bookstore or library. I haven't made much of an attempt to read them systematically; although I do have, somewhere, a suggestion for a reading order that ties the various narratives and characters together in a logical way, I haven't followed it because I don't generally have the next book at hand.

Status: My new disk drives are out for delivery, yay! Looking up a microphone and possibly a monitor. I've been using this $5 Cyber Acoustics model for something like 20 years. It's starting to literally fall apart. The monitor isn't quite that old but it would be a good idea to have a backup while DVI is still available. Damn, thinking about that, I should buy more toner for my printer. Wasn't I supposed to be saving for a move to Texas?
Also Status: Do people not understand what a PayPal invoice is? I set up at a new convention last August that I think could do well in the future. Registration for the next one opened sometime in September. Strangely, it was just registration with no mechanism or request for payment. They had a few corner booths at a slightly higher price so I included a note asking if they were available so I knew which price to pay. Of course, I heard nothing back, so I just let it go, because I have enough to deal with already.
So January rolls around and the organizer is asking for money from a different e-mail address. I told him I was expecting a PayPal invoice that never showed up. He said I was all set for a corner booth and he'll send an invoice next week. That was three weeks ago. Now he says "you can send the $100 to E_MAIL_ADDRESS_HERE :)" What part of "PayPal invoice" don't you understand?

This. Yes, it's very common. Minimize disruption by closing the road when relatively few people are using it, and open it during the day when lots of people use it. The road maintenance takes longer and costs more, but fewer people people want to bludgeon the Department of Transportation (or whatever you guys call it) administration with tire irons.
It also reduces the road-rage bludgeoning that would occur when everyone goes to the other highway or surface streets.

It was amusing (in a "rain on your wedding day" sort of way)--about 20 minutes after I posted that I got a notification that I had to go back and fix the return because I'd checked the wrong box at one point.

I did the 1040EZ until I bought a house. Then I used Turbo Tax mostly to decide if I should take the standard deduction or itemize. It just got steadily more complicated from there. There was a year that I had three contract jobs, a part-time job, unemployment, four bank accounts, stock sales, jury duty, and a business that lost money. It would've been worse if I hadn't written my own software to handle the business calculations.

in HTML for stuff. MDN suggests to use a library and has links to a few. Check one that's for making games and in the news section for it I findEthereum game development with Phaser
A comprehensive new tutorial on creating a 2D arcade game with highscores recorded in a smart contract on the Ethereum blockchain. In this tutorial, we will be creating a simple 2D arcade-style game where highscores are recorded in a smart contract on the Ethereum blockchain. We will guide you through setting up the project, programming the game using Phaser.js, writing the smart contract in the Solidity language using the Remix IDE, deploying the smart contract to Ethereum testnet, and finally connecting our game to Ethereum using MetaMask and Web3.js.
What kind of game are we making? We’ll keep it simple. The screen will have a bunch of randomly placed coins, and the player must collect as many of them as they can before the timer runs out. The score will then be recorded in the smart contract.
My first question is "why?". My second question is "WHY?". My third question is "WHY?!?". Also, you stopped keeping it simple as soon as you added "blockchain" to data that could be saved without problem in a fucking text file.
Considering how simple the game it will probably be simpler just using canvas directly instead of involving any libraries when thinking about it...
-
@Atazhaia Good idea. Then you can build your own blockchain into it without the additional overhead of some other library
-

Status: I received a phone call from an unknown number and let it go to voice mail. The message was cut off at the start (it's a pre-recorded message that presumably doesn't wait for anything) but it mentioned that they had investigated my social insurance number and I would be in trouble if I didn't get back to them. However, apparently these scammers have never heard of voice mail before, since the only way to contact them would have been to press 1 on the call, and they didn't leave any number or anything.
-
@hungrier said in The Official Status Thread:

its not that they don't know about voicemail, it's that they don't care..... to them if you're smart enough to screen your calls through voicemail then you're too smart to be worth scamming. Also there are darned good odds that if you canned the number they called from it's not their real number because they spoofed it or only rented the number for a short time.
-
@Vixen They hid the number anyway; my called ID showed it as "Unknown" (as opposed to just a number I didn't recognize).
But yeah, spoofed numbers are annoying. Especially when your number is the one that gets spoofed and someone calls asking why you called them
-
@hungrier Status Part 2: Another phone call from a hidden number. Will it be the same thing?
e: Yep. "To avoid legal consequences, you need to get in contact as soon as you receive this message. To connect immediately, press 1."

yeah.... and this ladies and virii is why my phone literally will not ring through to me unless you're in my address book. if you're number isn't preapproved you're getting voicemail first.

Doesn't work for me. There are numbers in my address book that I don't want to answer, either. Like my ex. Or "Fast talking recruiter I can't understand." But neither of them have called me in a long time.

Even better is when that spoofed number (yours) calls you!
I immediately assume any caller id with a number and no name is spam. Wait. I assume any phone call I get is spam unless I actually recognize the number+name.

Never mind.
https://witcher.fandom.com/wiki/The_Witcher_dice_poker:
This may be a 'game of chance' in theory, but in reality some players are inherently 'luckier' than others, including yourself. What this means is that as Geralt moves on to progressively more advanced players, the system that calculates the dice values is modified to favour the NPC, with the NPC having a greater probability of getting a better hand than the player. At higher levels this can be particularly frustrating, with Geralt's opponent easily cranking out great hands with each throw when he himself has trouble getting three-of-a-kind.
The initial bet seems to determine the overall 'luck' of the game. A low first bet dramatically improving the chances that you will beat your opponent. This is unconfirmed mathematically, but has been anecdotally observed many times. (This is as close to being confirmed as is possible without empirical evidence, having played twenty games of poker dice, ten where the initial bet was the largest possible one, and ten where it was the lowest, the statistics speak for themselves: Of the ten first games, eight were lost and only two won. The remaining ten (where the initial bet was the smallest one), resulted in nine wins and only one loss. Furthermore, the chance of getting an initial combination of matching dice seems to improve drastically when opting for the smaller initial bet.Though I guess I have the advantage of being a Time Lord.
