Status: I hate it when I get bitten by C++'s arcane rules of doing... well, just about anything.
Somewhere deep in some template shit I'm writing, the compiler complains that the
call of ‘overloaded_function_foo‘ is ambiguous
. But why? Only one of the two overloads should be viable: For one of the overloads all arguments have valid conversions to the parameters, for the other one there's an argument that cannot be converted.Since apparently the compiler and I disagree on that, I test my assumption by commenting out the overload that I think is the unambiguously correct one, leaving only the one I think isn't viable. Since the compiler previously said the call is ambiguous, it should now compile, right?
New errorcannot convert ‘Bar’ to ‘Baz’ in ...
That's what I said! Then why the fuck do you think that overload is viable?

With Unreal Engine, I've gotten used to avoiding overloads, because natch blueprints can't support them...

Status: Building a gaming-grade desktop PC for a friend. I've been away from desktops for a few years, having switched to laptops for all my use, and I'm clearly a bit behind the times. Apparently, modern PC cases don't even have the capability for mounting internal optical drives, which is a problem because this person badly wants a Blu Ray drive.
On the other hand, the ray tracing demos for the RTX 2060 are really freaking cool. They look like prerendered videos. And it's fun to look at the Task Manager CPU tab when there's a Ryzen 5 installed.

How exactly are you defining modern? The type that have LEDs all over or are super small? I went to NewEgg and found several pretty quickly. But it's been some time since I built a PC as well and that one was actually supposed to be a DVR prototype before it ended up being turned in to a regular workstation.
-
@Zenith It was an unobtrusive and non-flashy MicroATX case by Fractal Design. There's absolutely nothing on the front panel allowing optical drives, which I didn't realize until after I unboxed everything since it never occurred to me that such a thing existed. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised, though, since optical drives are dinosaurs now.
-
@mott555 Meanwhile, I've got a tower case from ~6y ago with an optical drive that isn't hooked up, because all my SATA ports are being used
-
@hungrier said in The Official Status Thread:

This new build didn't use a single SATA port. Not even one. It's shockingly bare inside.

@topspin Maybe the viable function is also viable in a different specialization?

I don't quite follow, can you elaborate please?
-
@topspin I know very little about C++ and practically nothing about templates. However, you mentioned these functions were "deep in some template shit". I'm wondering if maybe the compiler is finding the "correct" overload multiple times somehow, like through different instantiations of the template.

Status: A non-techie friend is asking me how to install custom firmware and drivers on his DVD drive so he can load games with it. Me:
Several rounds of back-and-worth in which I explain you don't need drivers for a DVD drive. He insists it needs custom firmware to play games. He also has no idea what the word "firmware" means.
Eventually, I figure out he's actually trying to play a CD-ROM game from the early 1990's on a Windows 10 computer, and since it doesn't work, he jumped to the conclusion that his DVD drive was at fault and it needed modification.
Now he's asking me for a one-size-fits-all solution to make any game from the 90's work on his DVD drive. I'm about to answer "Buy a PC from the 1990's."

I see. I mentioned that part only because the function is called from a template, and thus I need overloads and can't just avoid it by renaming them, and also because of the frustrating wall or errors involved. The overloaded functions I'm trying to call are, however, not templates themselves. If I comment out the one that I think should not be viable (i.e. the opposite of my first experiment), it compiles fine as it should (if your theory were correct it would still conflict with itself). Well, this part only, I obviously need that other overload for a different instantiation, so getting rid of it is not an option.

@topspin I am not talking this person through installing a VM over text message. I would rather do something that has a reasonable chance of success, like teach the squirrel that lives outside my bedroom window how to build a moon lander from scratch.

Getting Windows 95/98 with working games in a VM can be a massive pain in the arse. For a non-technical person, buying a 90s PC is likely the best solution for stuff that doesn't run on Windows 10.

Package Status
Something sent from the US via USPS has been in the hands of Canada Post for a few days, and as of today it is in my city. However, despite being sent to a PO Box at a post office, a service which Canada Post should be quite familiar with, it's delayed and their initial estimate of "it'll be delivered by end of day Friday" is now "maybe Tuesday, check again later"
Separately from that, I had placed an order on Amazon last night, with free shipping. It's currently out for delivery.

Uh, any standard ATX case will still fit shit, so long as it's actually standard ATX and not wish-it-were custom. And there's still plenty of new cases off the shelf with a 5.25" bay slot .
-
@Tsaukpaetra Not this one, not without some Dremel work. Which I'm not about to do to a very nice-looking Fractal Design case.

Lesson learned, it just never occurred to me that any big-name case manufacturer would ever make a desktop chassis without front panel punchouts or slots for 5.25" devices.

My car and driveway are buried under 27634578923647 metres of snow and it's cold as frig. Tonight is a complete write-off but I have to go somewhere tomorrow, so I'm going to have to shovel it some time, and it's only going to get colder.

My car and driveway are buried under 27634578923647 metres of snow
185 AU, roughly the radius of the Kuiper Belt. That's an ... impressive amount of snow.
Edit: I don't know how big your driveway is, but if I assume, say, 3x5 m, that's 4E+14 m³ of snow. Assuming it's freshly fallen snow at a density of 200 kg/m³ (packed snow is around 300, and the bottom layers would certainly be packed, to say the least, but I'm estimating conservatively), so 8E+16 kg; not as much as I thought it would turn out to be, but I don't think your car's suspension is happy.
OTOH, the surface of the snow is moving at relativistic speed, about .75 c, which will increase the mass by a factor to calculate. I also suspect there are going to be some serious structural problems holding that column of snow together at that speed.

No. I think it got down to 40F (~277 K) once for a few minutes. Of course that was "freezing cold temperatures with iguanas falling from the trees" as far as Florida is concerned, so it counts.
-
@Benjamin-Hall Well, we've had neither snow- nor iguanafall. (The latter is possibly related to the general iguana-deficiency of this region.)
Honestly, at this point, I'd settle for either.

We had one day of almost-freezing rain (it probably did freeze overnight, but the temperature was just above freezing, and everything had melted, by the time I left for work), and a couple of nights ago we got maybe a cm of snow. Again, it was almost entirely melted by the time I left for work, and I might not have even noticed if it hadn't remained unmelted, for some unknown reason, on the windshield of the car parked next to mine. That's been pretty much all the winter we've had.

Status: Apparently people can neither write correct statements/instructions, nor even understand the difference.
The traffic sign says the local highway is closed Feb. 7th to Feb 10th, from 10pm to 5am. I think it’s weird to not do it all in one go, but they’ve done weirder things before, so whatever, who am I to question them. Of course, what they actually mean is that it’s blocked from Feb 7th 10 pm to Feb 10th 5am, continuously. That is, however, not what the sign says. For comparison, when the signs say you need parking tickets Mo-Fr from 8am to 6pm that also means you don’t need one Wed 8pm, because the times are for each day, not for the first/last respectively. But when I complain about it that it’s wrong, as these two things are not the same (one time span vs several smaller spans), people don’t understand the difference and tell me I’m an idiot.
