@hungrier There is this concept of tidying things up and creating order out of chaos. It helps you find things without having to use search.
Tidying up what? Start menu entries? Why would I ever want/need to do extra work in order to make a slower, more cumbersome method of launching applications slightly easier? The "integrated Launchy" feature that was introduced in Vista or whenever was the best thing to ever happen to the start menu, and recently they fucked it up by including Bing results that open in Edge, but it was still ok as long as the actual thing that anyone would want, namely installed apps, was still there.
-
@hungrier Start menu search is probably the biggest Windows 10 fuckup of them all, and that's saying a lot.
-
@anonymous234 Seriously. They had a very useful feature that worked great, and then they integrated a digital assistant and Bing-in-Edge into it, something that I'm pretty sure nobody ever thought of asking for, and if they had they would have wanted the opposite.

That's Windows 10 in a nutshell.

I'd put the extreme intrusiveness of Windows 10 upgrade on older systems as the first. This is the worst thing that has ever happened in personal computing by a mile. Second would be obligatory automatic updates and all the problems it causes. Third is how update 1809 has deleted user documents for many people who were forced to install it.. But broken start menu search is a solid fourth.
Fun fact: if you managed to get download the upgrader but ultimately haven't upgraded within allowed time, your Windows Update now always shows "installing Windows 10" when installing updates even though it's only installing regular updates and not Windows 10. This doesn't apply to newer installations of Windows 7 and 8.

e: fuck it, at this point this is going in my sig.

@hungrier people wanted faster horses. Atwood gave them slower horses. Somehow, it's still become immensely successful.

IMHO this is the crux of the matter, and the main reason for the strong negative reactions it has triggered. I'm fine with automatic, and even mandatory, security patches and bug fixes (assuming they are reasonably well tested), but don't you dare push your new
annoyances"features" on me, don't break the functionality I'm currently using, and don't mess around with the interface behind my back, or I'll get angry. I don't just use my computer because I like computering around, I usually need to be able to actually get stuff done without re-learning everything from scratch every time.

Obviously you've never had a bad update that just refused to work on your computer, and had to endure doing system restore twice a week at random times. Skipping updates is essential for having reliable computers - ones that you can just turn on and not worry about anything.

I am using ClassicShell and I am happy with a sorted menu because I can navigate it with a blindfold.
Classic Shell is OK, but I spent $5 for a copy of Start-Is-Back which has a couple of extra features that I like.
The whole concept of "start menu search" is really bizarre to me. Take two minutes to organize your start menu items. I've never had to search for a program that I want to run. Never. Ever.
Oh wait . . . . that only applies to Windows 7 and earlier. Because Microsoft decided "FUCK YOU - you should only have a static start menu that you can't change or organize in any meaningful way." So now, the standard response from everyone is "Just type the name of the program you want to run into the search box."
Wait . . . what? In order to run a program, I have to type the name of the program I want to run . . . . just like I did when I was running MS-DOS in 1987? What sort of retarded fuckery is that? There aren't enough facepalms and fuckyous in the universe to fully express the stupidity of the Windows 10 Start Menu.

Who thought that programs should be organised by company names
KDE's solution is way better
-
@TimeBandit Where should Internet Games and Graphics Settings go?
-
Also in the brokenness of the Windows 10 Start Menu. Now, I have removed all the shitty tiles from it. On one of my computers, the tile view is completely gone from the menu so it defaults to the app list. On my other computer I get this as the default:
An empty rectangle! Good job, Microsoft!

Muscle memory is a thing, try using it sometimes and not relying to Microsoft's idiotic ideas.
You mean like the muscle memory of

Enter? Or does muscle memory only work if you're navigating the start menu with your mouse like some computer illiterate caveman?

The name of the program, not the name of the executable file.

Eh. I've put a few things in my "favorites" but I rarely use the menu for stuff. Now...this is KDE, so my search for programs actually works.
I dunno...for some things manual navigation through menus or folders is fine but for plenty of stuff it drives me nuts and I love the "just search" paradigm that we have now. I also use the command line so typing the name of a program I want to use seems pretty natural to me.

Or just the first few letters; that to me is the biggest time saver. If I want to start Visual Studio, I just need to type vi in the thing. And as a bonus, it doesn't start vi.
My ideal version would be the way that Launchy does it, where IIRC it looks for the letters you type in order. So you could invent your own shortcuts (fx for firefox, vs for visual studio, etc). The Windows one AFAIK doesn't let you do that.

I just looove to type
fex
to let Launchy open File Explorer. Once it's in the history as "last picked item for those keys" you don't even have to think about it.The only Linux launcher which I've found to come close is Kupfer, though installing it could sometimes be a pain due to a couple of its dependencies.

@JBert TLDR of this entire topic: Launchy is the best and all other software should just go home.

It also works really well for people who work on multiple computers, occasionally not their own.

@Applied-Mediocrity I have my start menu set to 20 recently-used programs which, along with the few others pinned to the start menu or taskbar, encompasses everything I ever need to open quickly. At the moment it's actually four short of those 20.

Actually, I have set to combine taskbar items only when full, to see window titles. That, in turn, makes pinned items jump around, which I don't suffer with Quick Lunch.

I have the same taskbar setting, and my pinned items always stay in order. Ones that aren't open stay as icons, multiple windows from the same app stay together (next to each other until they get stacked) and anything not pinned goes to the end. Plus, with pinned items I can launch them with +their number, which I almost never use, but it's nice to have.
