Is it actual news stories? That would suggest it needs a data connection to get the alerts, so turning on aeroplane mode should do it. If it's only used as an alarm clock it shouldn't have any unintended consequences

  • @boomzilla Mmmm... it did not seem to point to Google News, but all Google Something apps look so similar in name that it might well have been. If so, that one will get the boot as soon as I can (assuming -- hoping! -- that I can remove or at least disable it).

Thankfully I've long removed the SIM from that phone, so no danger of uncontrolled data use.

Which is 35 bytes in UTF-8. My point stands.

I was going to figure out how many bytes it was, but then I realized that the HexEdit plugin for Notepad++ got disabled due to bugginess, and Javascript's strings are already multibyte characters (although not UTF-8, as evidenced by the need for surrogate pair matching in the regexp in order to match single characters) so String.prototype.length wouldn't provide much of anything meaningful.

I guess I could have just pasted it in Notepad++ and checked the size, but that didn't occur to me and the characters were rendering as boxes anyway so I wasn't completely sure that they were the correct characters and not placeholders (they should be correct, if it's in UTF-8 mode when pasting... they're just not rendering correctly).

The really interesting part is that Firefox lets you highlight the combining characters separately in the 👩🏻‍ character... as you highlight over it, the left and right half will be highlighted individually, and correspond to 👩 and 🏻‍ respectively.

Anyway, yes, it's 35 bytes, and here's the UTF-8 in hex view (hurray for debug):

    F0 9F 91 A9 F0 9F 8F BB-E2 80 8D E2 9D A4 EF B8
    8F E2 80 8D F0 9F 92 8B-E2 80 8D F0 9F 91 A9 F0
    9F 8F BE

Note that it's different from the UTF-16 that Ben posted (which is big-endian UTF-16 without a byte order mark).

edit: I filled out my table above to include UTF-16 (little and big endian) and UTF-8 encodings.

I bet the person who initially approved adding emojis (back when there were only a few of them) to Unicode must feel terrible today. Not to mention the dirty looks from colleagues: "Hey, remember back when we used to work on actually helping everyone communicate, instead of pandering to teenagers on social media? Thanks again."

One would assume that the kiss mark emoji is meant to suggest something more ... carnal ... than the red heart emoji does by itself. Not sure if/how that meaning comes through in the "correct" combined emoji...

Also, I expanded the table that I posted, so it now includes the byte encodings. It's 35 bytes for UTF-8 and 30 bytes for UTF-16 (regardless of endianness).

We need @ender to come back and show us his really tall lowercase a again.

  • @boomzilla Reminds me of something that happened in our household a while back. We got an alert that my daughter had exceeded her data cap (already about twice what the rest of us have) quite early in the month, so I sat down with her to see what was using it all... turns out the default Weather app was to blame; following a recent update, it sucked up 3.5GB of data overnight while she was asleep. So we reset that app to the default and then blocked it (she didn't even use it anyway), and I didn't make her pay for the excess data since it wasn't her fault.

Things like this make me glad that I keep the data connection on my phone off normally, and only turn it on when I explicitly want to do something that requires it. (Though the main benefit to me is that it blocks the ads in casual games, which otherwise vary from annoying to literally making the games unplayable - but the reason I started in the first place was because those ads were sucking up far too much of my quota.)

  • Considered Harmful

@Scarlet_Manuka Do you have DNS66 installed? I haven't noticed any ads in anything since I installed it.

It should be. But it's not.
You're making the mistake of thinking as a computing professional.

@Applied-Mediocrity no, I'm thinking like a normal person that realizes that when they sign a contract that says "I'll be paying a dollar a megabyte if monthly data goes beyond 5GB", it means that they'll be paying a dollar a megabyte if monthly data goes beyond 5GB.

With only 5 bytes you can encode an individual emoji for all 7 billion people alive. Just need to keep it updated. 🍹

How many required to enumerate all the genders, then?

    1/8th of a byte.

Not quite what I was aiming at, but amusing none-the-less...

Ok, you're thinking like a normal person. Most don't.

  • @Scarlet_Manuka I'm not using the same sequence - since that post was made, new combining characters have been added, so I used most* of them as of today (even the last time I posted ‧̴̵̶̷̸̡̢̧̨̛̖̗̘̙̜̝̞̟̠̣̤̥̦̩̪̫̬̭̮̯̰̱̲̳̹̺̻̼͇͈͉͍͎̀́̂̄̃̅̆̇̈̉̊̋̌̍̎̏̐̑̒̓̔̽̾̿̀́͂̓̈́͆͊͋͌̕̚ͅ͏͓͔͕͖͙͚͐͑͒͗͛ͣͤͥͦͧͨͩͪͫͬͭͮͯ͘͜͟͢͝͞͠͡ there were already more characters than in Michael's blog entry).

    * I only used the above and below classes, and missed all the others (missing about 42 of them if I counted right)

  • @ender weird, the Microsoft one is just à̴̵̶̷̸̡̢̧̨̛̖̗̘̙̜̝̞̟̠̣̤̥̦̩̪̫̬̭̮̯̯̰̱̲̳̹̺̻̼͇͈͉͍͎́̂̃̄̅̆̇̈̉̊̋̌̍̎̏̐̑̒̓̔̽̾̿̀́͂̓̈́͆͊͋͌̕̚͠͡ͅ and it renders correctly, but yours has a bunch of rectangles and for some reason a bunch of the combining characters aren't combining.

"Trans lesbian" seems to be the demographic Mastodon is most popular with, at least for the toots that get federated to my instance.

@boomzilla Reminds me of something that happened in our household a while back.

Do you not have wi-fi? My phone is connected to the wi-fi while I'm asleep.

Also, you can set a mobile data cycle and limit in the Android settings (I don't know if iPhones have something similar), and then it'll stop using data when it reaches the cap that you've set. (Wi-fi will still work though.)

More likely that the letter was getting clipped at the edge of its bounding box. In his post here, it got clipped to the post's content box.

  • @ben_lubar Probably because the fonts don't support most of these characters yet. I should sort them, so at least you'll get the tower on the first character.
