Status: Apparently my computer thinks I'm on the low end of the bell curve... the lock screen suggestion thing that's been advertising the "Hey Cortana" type functionality just suggested I "Tap and ask how many meters in 1 kilometer"
-
@remi said in The Official Status Thread:
@heterodox Yeah, if they can accomplish the same using a standard notification on the lock screen, that's fine for me.
But at the moment, it doesn't seem to be the case. Now on the lock screen I get the normal notification (OK, why not) but interacting with it in any way except dismissing it requires the pin (which is a pain since I mostly use finger print to unlock and means I need to hold the phone differently), and there is no way to reply quickly from the notification itself, without going to the app.
What bothers me is that it was working before and the app setting clearly says this doesn't work because of Android 8. So fuck Android for having broken a useful feature.
No. It may have been useful but it was also a security issue. Google doesn't remove stuff from Android unless it has a good reason to. There is reply-style functionality in the standard notifications API (Android Messages uses it) and if the app wasn't using it, that's its own problem.

AIUI, the restriction doesn't apply to third-party lock screens so you could try that, though I don't know the security implications.
That's an interesting idea. I'm not familiar with those, any suggestion for a simple & nice one?
Third party lock screens are generally an ugly hack.

Ah! In Pie_Flavor's little tiny brain "does it right" means some of the icons just don't fucking work at all. Now we know.
That was in fact not what I said.

That's not true, because my phone on 8.0 can do exactly that. I can even type out a message from the lockscreen. Sounds like someone is lying because they can't figure out the API in the new version.

Status: My feet hurt.
Yesterday I felt like taking a walk to the bank, so I could get a new debit card. There's two locations in my city; one to the northnortheast and one to the southsoutheast. Both of them are about a thirty minute walk. I'll call them location A and location B.I was originally going to go to location B because there's more back roads so there'd probably have been more shade (it was high noon), but then I remembered that there's a Safeway near location A so I'd be able to grab something cold on the way back, which I would want because it was fucking hot. I put it into Google Maps but realize after a couple of turnings I accidentally put in location B. I set it to location A and off we go.
'Oh, sorry, our card printing machine is broken. We don't know when it'll be fixed. But you know, there's another location in this city, location B'
Long ass trek to location B. Shortest route is straight up main street for maximum sunlight. What do I find literally right next to location B but a Safeway. Fuck me.
I ended up with a 14232 step count.

Status: We have a hack day coming up, and for one of the projects i've been working, one of the things they want is some conversation: they want customers to be able to talk, as well as just generally get people talking somewhere about our product.
: How about a forum?
: Yeah, we could lock it down to just customers of our product...
: I mean, if we want new people to sign up, having a community they can join and ask questions and feel around a bit, that could help.
: Nah, we'd make it a paid feature, and integrate it with our systems...Either way moderation would be a nightmare, and I don't want to touch it. Apparently one of our products has an unofficial forum, and our company wants one we own, so I picked up on something people have been wanting. But I mean, I set up PHPBB3 when I was like 16, and it was great, and had basically all the features we need... it wouldn't require much effort...

Don't worry, $sequentialDialer will get to you soon enough.
Last night I received a call from some fly-by-night Duct cleaner. 3 times. 3 different numbers. All were <my area code>-<my prefix>-<some random 4 digits. Fucker. For some reason I waited after the 3rd, at the end of the message: "press 0 for more info, press 9 to be removed". Press 9. Very huffy voice "you will no longer receive our calls". Fingers crossed.)

@stillwater said in The Official Status Thread:
The places I've worked had zero fucking unit tests.
When I started on my current project, all the tests were broken but everyone handled that by just ignoring them all. Yes, my colleagues were pushing broken code into production, and were so busy running around trying to fix the problems they were making that they didn't have time to prevent problems from being repeated over and over. I beat the tests into submission and made everything stricter (we now have them all coupled to our CI and code review flow) and it's helped a lot at catching idiot errors before they cause problems.
But now, I'm converting the whole lot into a different language. We're making everything a bit stricter in the process, and I'm going to be a lot more thorough with the testing, and will seek to ensure that critical (but dull) bits of software infrastructure work provably and reliably. (I'm handling our complex non-standard communications infrastructure, and a colleague who's also pretty strict about this stuff is handling the core system data model, which will be 100% tested before we're done precisely because everything else depends on it. I fear I won't make the comms side as good, in part because it's huge and has handlers for a lot of weird edge cases.)
In any case, just because there were no tests doesn't mean that there shouldn't be tests in the future, when you put them there. It's a (cheap!) investment in making everything much easier to maintain.

@pie_flavor said in The Official Status Thread:
Besides, where's the harm in unlocking? I open the drawer, tap the wifi icon, thumb the thumbprint sensor, and sleep the phone again. That's like, a half second extra. Big whoop.
Depends how you hold the phone, I guess, but for me it's more than that. I have a medium size phone (not a tablet-disguised-as-a-phone), so I can hold it in my palm with the index on the power button and the thumb hovering over the top. Also, the fingerprint sensor is right in the middle of the back, so I cannot access it when I hold the phone this way.
So when accessible from the lock screen, I could pick up the phone this way, press the power button to light up the screen, swipe from top and activate wifi with my thumb. Now I need to pick up the phone in a slightly different grip (that allows me to access the fingerprint sensor), hope the sensor works the first time (it works about 70% of the time I'd say, and consistently doesn't depending on some state of my skin (dry skin or not etc.)), then switch my grip so I can now reach the icons on the screen and turn it on.
It is a small thing, but it is definitely annoying to me. Anyway, it's not so much about loosing half-a-second of my day (I don't switch wifi on/off that often!), it's more about the overall attitude of devs that they know better than users and can remove or alter features in anyway they like without any care about the users. This is really the part that bothers me, and makes me seriously consider never updating my device at all.
-
@pie_flavor said in The Official Status Thread:
It may have been useful but it was also a security issue. Google doesn't remove stuff from Android unless it has a good reason to.
Don't give me that shit. If Google couldn't guess when implementing the feature the first time that it was a security risk, that makes them even dumber than removing it afterwards.
Again, this is just showing how little device/software providers care about users. App developers, at least, get some feedback and are in a competitive market. OS devs, not so much. So they fuck up with you because I'm pretty sure they don't even have the slightest idea of what a "user" is.

Pulse SMS. Might be related to how they did the lockscreen on your OEM's implementations too
-
@sloosecannon Thanks!
Although it doesn't seem any better than Mood, from the lock screen I see the notification (which only shows the first line of the message) but cannot do anything at all from it without unlocking the phone (i.e. tapping the notification asks me for my pin and then unlocks & opens the app).
I haven't seen anything in the settings that might related to this, and as mentioned earlier Huawei seems to purposefully limit what their lock screen shows, so it might be their fault as well.
(also, I haven't seen Pulse using the notification LED -- I like very much being able to use different colours for me 2-3 most frequent contacts -- but maybe I've missed the setting, I just used it for a couple of minutes)
-
@remi If you swipe down on the notification, do you see more of the message and reply options? No idea if you'll have to unlock to make the reply, as I don't tend to use quick reply features
-
@Jaloopa No. There is a small arrow pointing down as well, but any interaction with any part of the notification (on the lock screen) gets me a fleeting message (don't remember the exact words) to "touch again to unlock" or such, and then I get the pin screen.
Note that while the phone is unlocked, then I get the options to reply and such (and Pulse looks quite nice in how you can customize the actions there, although it doesn't have the quick replies that Mood has... it's kind of hard to put both things in the same UI, Mood does it by having only 2 actions, performed by swiping its custom notification left or right, but maybe this cannot be done with a standard notification), so I really see what you mean, but it's just not there on the lock screen.
It really seems to be a lock-screen issue more than an application issue, I'd say. Which mean I might say a slightly smaller "fuck you" to Android and a slightly bigger one to Huawei, but really, in the end they both display the same stupid "fuck the user" mentality.
-
@remi Make sure you don't have "Hide sensitive notification content" set in your lock screen preferences; if you do, you're not going to (or shouldn't) get quick reply support from any application.
-
@heterodox I don't find this option anywhere in my settings (I guess the OEM has removed it?). But remember that before the upgrade to Android 8, I could get everything I wanted on the lock screen (well, since I had an overlay I don't know if it worked with notifications, but the overlay certainly did).
It could be that during the upgrade, Huawei not only decided to hide this option but also to always turn it on, fucking me ever deeper in the process.
