I just checked my edit history. The original form was spelled correctly but grammatically incorrect. And I corrected it into something that was neither.

That's what my students do on tests. They take a correct answer and mis-correct/cross it out due to second-guessing. And are strongly averse to stopping that bad habit.

@benjamin-hall
Everyone at school always looked at me like I was crazy when I explained why I finished tests so fast..."I never go back once I've put an answer down."
(Well, that and I have a fairly high reading speed, but I didn't usually go into that detail)

POETS is justification enough IMO ;) but not wanting to be in a dangerous situation when commuting is a good reason, provided you're in a position where some flexibility is possible (so harder when manning a helpdesk than when not front-line support).

It breaks even more. I also can't install it because I have less than 300 mb free space on my user partition (and it refuses to install to the sdcard).

Nope, used to work fine. Now one of my accounts is completely empty and my main account doesn't show more than 17 messages.
It's all good though, going to gmail.com in Chrome still works fine...

Status: Giving up completely on Typescript. While the idea seems nice, I'm either stumbling over completely unreadable error messages or it's yammering at me that the type definition file cannot be found even if it's right next to the file I'm editing.
At least with the "normal" Javascript I don't get additional points of failure plus error messages are at least in the vicinity of the actual error.
The best part is when either the compiler or the IDE complain about a missing type definition file - but the compiled code works just fine.

Once it get's "compiled" It doesn't use the definitions file anymore, because (in theory) all that safety checking and cruft has been "proven".

Yes. But it's yielding an error before it compiles. And the other times when I actually really didn't have a definition file yet, it didn't even compile.

Nice deck, and nice Weber Some people claim other fuels are available but we all know that gas is unsportmanlike!
I start mine with a little JET A-1 for that authentic 'are you bbq'ing an aircraft?!' aroma.
-
@cursorkeys Thanks! The deck is really just the first stage. Gonna bring the steps down to it, make some flower boxes, and the grill area is gonna use those stone blocks you see at the corner of the house.
And yeah, that Weber kettle is awesome. We also have a Weber gas grill for steaks, and a smoker for ribs and such. If its not rainy or insanely hot, at least one of those is probably being used almost every day.

Oh, I got to that point. After "Making sure everything is ready" for an hour (!!!) it came back with: "We can't tell f your PC has enough space to continue installing Windows 10. Try restarting Setup."
Not enough space? Fuckin' 331 Gb free ain't enough for ya!?!? The disk isn't even half full!

I'm just playing, I'm bored. There's nothing wrong with this machine.
Edit: I suppose I should work on my text-tone. What words did I write that make you believe I'm shocked that the Windows Installer is failing?
-
@tsaukpaetra The GAH in caps? But yeah, I've installed Windows many times and the actual installation after it starts was no problem but the initial stages were always a PITA with the installer.
On an unrelated note, I always feel like punching Satya s face with a smug little smile whenever something fucky happens with Windows. He probably is not directly responsible but we're not here on this forum to logically make sense all the time. Are we?
-
@stillwater said in The Official Status Thread:

Dismayed in my opinion isn't exactly shocked. ;)
I'm dismayed that a computer that (for all intents and purposes) is Win10 ready (and Win10 lusty) is being cock-blocked for no reason. I could probably make it sigh in relief by clean-installing, but that goes against the intent of keeping all the things on it...

Every time I touch Linux it pisses me off.
Somehow, in the midst of apt upgrade, apt dist-upgrade, apt autoremove, etc. doing some major maintenance on my dual boot partition, I somehow fucking removed X Windows and Gnome. Ohhhkay. I research how to put it back, people are throwing "apt-get install" commands around everywhere, but you ask five people, you get five different lists of what packages need to be installed.
I'm familiar with how Linux people make things way more difficult than they have to be, so I continue researching with different search terms; there has to be a one-click "turn it back on" as that's what happens during installation. Finally find you can run
tasksel
, checkGnome Desktop Environment
, and hit OK. Why would this not be everyone's advice? Why make it so difficult? That finishes, X Windows initializes, and suddenly my screen is flashing grey rapidly enough to cause a serious headache. Hold down Ctrl+Alt+F2 long enough that X Windows stops trying to steal focus, and
telinit 3
. After about half an hour, I find thenvidia
video driver no longer works on my machine for whatever the fuck reason, butnouveau
does. Tried for another half an hour to get thenvidia
video driver working, as I need CUDA capability, but it refuses. Fuck it, uninstall it.Then after another shitty boot, remove
nvidia.conf
from/etc/modules.d
as apparently removing that when the kernel module is removed would be too fucking sensible. I finally have a desktop environment again but I have a max resolution of 1024x768 and the display is showing up asUnknown Display
. FUCKING WHY.Wander off to make a chicken pot pie, come back and the machine's gone to sleep. I know I had that disabled before, upgrading packages must have reset the config even though it's not supposed to. No, of course the machine doesn't wake from sleep properly; this is fucking Linux. Have to hard reset the machine and turn auto sleep off again.
And people say we're going to have the "year of the Linux Desktop" any day now. Fuck off.
-
@heterodox Oh Lord!

Do I have permission to print this rant on a t shirt and wear it around Linux fanboys?

It's midnight; too late to eat. I'll try it tomorrow. Now I'm just working on how to get a resolution better than 1024x768 and it's pissing me off.
xrandr
claims that's the best my monitor can support and I know for a fact it's not. This is what I'm doing instead of sleeping. Yaaay, Linux fuckery.Edit: Did an
lspci -k
, I seekernel modules: nvidia
, nokernel module in use
line. Uh, a.) how does it know about the nvidia module, given that I saw it removed from the dkms directory, and b.) where is nouveau? I have it in /etc/modules.d, but apparently that works for nvidia but not for nouveau. Fucking whatever. Do amodprobe nouveau
, lose all display, have to hard reset. Shocker.Boot with
nouveau.noaccel=1 nouveau.nomodeset=1
(this isn't my first rodeo), switch to runlevel 3, modprobe nouveau (nice resolution on the terminal now!), then switch back to runlevel 5. Cool. Resolution is now 1366x768 which isn't too bad. I'd like to put it at my normal 1920x1080 though. Do so, hit Apply and... get logged out. What the fuck?
Log back in, try to change resolution, hit Apply, get logged out.
What in the shit is this shit fuck shit.
Edit 2: Oh,
/etc/modprobe.d
still has nvidia-blacklists-nouveau.conf. Because again, that makes sense when the nvidia driver has been uninstalled. Fuck off.
-
@heterodox said in The Official Status Thread:

Well, if it's fallen back to whatever amounts to the basic display driver (vesa framebuffer probably) It likely can't display anything higher....
-
@heterodox said in The Official Status Thread:
I mean, if you want; it's not that good.
It is an amazing rant because I went through something really similar a year ago and what should have been a few apt-get install commands turned into an 8 hour deal.
I wanted to set up CUDA + theano when I still used to think Deep learning was the real deal. The biggest problem lies in the fact that you had to match particular versions of python, cuda, cudnn, the nvidia driver version, and theano. You fuck up in one place and you have to start from scratch depending on what you installed first.
-
There are a hundred ways to get this right using obscure linux commands to configure the system in weird ways.
-
When installing the nvidia driver, I was supposed to disable the noveau thingy whatever the fuck that is, and then installed the driver and then again boot into Linux. I could not do it by opening up a terminal like I normally do for other installations but had to login to this bizarre shell right after linux booted and then had to try installing the driver. Maybe I just booted Linux without the UI and just the terminal. Anyways I do what's told and bork the system. Some steps require other dependencies which failed to install with noveau disabled. So you had to enable them, install teh dependencies, then turn noveau off, then again give a shot at installing the Nvidia driver. This step ofcourse went round and round in circles until I stopped and went back googling.
-
After hours of googling and trying everything out I stumble upon a thread where the poor guy has executed the same number of steps and borked his shit and could not get CUDA to install at all. His solution was the alternative that was mentioned in the original CUDA site as the third option. If your number one option is not gonna work, why list it in the site at all? I don't know who's to blame, NVidia or Linux.
-
I execute the other step which is a sudo apt-get install for a lot of gigs and executed for what seemed hours and finally CUDA was all set. Setting up theano after that is a whole other WTF for another time. Fast forward a few months and I'm in a Deep learning circle jerk group and I mention in passing the shenanigans with noveau and CUDA and people go "OH LOL YOU DID THAT TOO OMGZZ NEVER WORKS PAIN IN THE ASS DO SUDO APT GET OMGZZZ". What the fuck? How is this not a huge fucking pain in the ass? let's forget what I went through for a second here, I'm irrelevant, I try random shit and move on to the next shiny thing. I assume a majority of people who want to work with Deep learning are Researchers and Scientists working on some problem, not some cunt with a coursera course creating a Neural network for a kaggle competition and wanking to the leaderboard. If you're gonna take precious brain-power from someone who might be working on something actually meaninngful and make them deal with setting up stuff like this in an obtuse and convoluted way and waste their fucking time, then fuck your open source, fuck your BASH shell and fuck your sudo apt-get nonsense. You absolutely do not give a shit about the user's time. It's either my way or the high way and the "Oh it is open source, so if you want to fix something then fix it". Ummmm... No you little cunt, people who are not programmers have a fucking life that use computers as means to an end and not sit around fucking with the kernel all day and jerk off to weird porn fucking neckbeard motherfuckers.
In closing, Anyone who says "Oh but it's open source and it is cool and hip" when told how linux sucks can go fuck themselves and Linus Torvalds can go fuck himself too. The kind of cunt who thinks he can be rude to people cos he's good at programming fucking unreal.
-
-
@tsaukpaetra Turns out the logoff behavior was due to the
nouveau.nomodeset=1
parameter. (Though why it would log off the user and not just refuse to apply the settings is completely beyond me.) Removed the nouveau blacklist (and all the other nvidia-specific modprobe config), rebooted without any nouveau parameters (which actually works now, nouveau finally supports my GPU) and I was able to change to 1920x1080 successfully.Boy, that was a waste of a day (on and off).
