Of course, even when it's not your shit doing the quoting or not. Quote it then too. Unless it does the quoting itself, then don't. Of course you can always tell in advance.

Status: Noticing that something somewhere in the stack of Linux Mint, Wine, and Mono was recently seriously optimizated. The only .NET application I use on Linux is KeePass. It used to take ~30 seconds to unlock the password database. Now it's only 1 - 2 seconds, in line with its performance on Windows. Cool.
Seems a point now but IIRC KeePassX runs without .Net or Mono on Linux.

@Gribnit This isn't even a problem I should be having, except Unix for brains hate binaries, so they make you download libsass as a C++ project and compile it instead of just giving you the compiled code, which would make it so you don't have to have a specific visual studio C++ development tool installed (WHICH IS NOW OLD!).
Also, notice that it's a
.vcxproj
file? That's a Visual Studio format. That they want you to compile with a WINDOWS application, and they can't deal with SPACES!!!

Couldn't muddy it much more than SFTP being both SSH File Transfer Protocol and Simple File Transfer Protocol.
-
@heterodox If you do the latter as FTPS it can be fine, from a security standpoint.

Simple File Transfer Protocol != FTPS (it runs on 115 vice 21 and has a different command set).
-
@heterodox Oh great, then what the hell is tunneling FTP with the same command set through SSH again?

SSH with port forwarding? ;)

There's no standard name for that. SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol) is more than just an SSH tunnel. @Tsaukpaetra's suggestion is as good as any.

SFTP is an application of SSH that pretends to be FTP but is implemented using SSH encrypted socket tunnels.
FTPS is standard FTP plus SSL to secure at least the control socket. (Apparently, you can still ask it to send the data completely in the clear, but why anyone would do so is a mystery to me. I'd want at least an integrity guaranteeβ¦)

@dkf said in The Official Status Thread:

It doesn't have to be implemented that way, though:
Even though this protocol is described in the context of the SSH2
protocol, this protocol is general and independent of the rest of the
SSH2 protocol suite. It could be used in a number of different
applications, such as secure file transfer over TLS [RFC2246] and
transfer of management information in VPN applications.Which, if it were implemented that way, it would make the "SSH" part of "SSH File Transfer Protocol" a misnomer for that implementation.
It's all designed for maximum confusion!
Edit: Also, it doesn't even pretend to be FTP (it's a binary protocol, not a text-based one). Like @Gribnit, you might be confused with "FTP run over SSH".

Of course it is. Software that tangles with security always is.

No. That FTPS, not SFTP. The location of the S matters.

"FTP run over SSH" is not referred to (or should not be referred to) as FTPS, since FTPS is FTP + SSL, not SSH.
Seriously, do a quick Google.

SFTP is not the same thing as FTP tunneled over SSH either.

Nothing. It was a test.
But I didn't expect something that compiled to immediately segfault with nothing to say for itself.Fuck it, it's on a relatively ancient version of FreeBSD anyways, this just pushes me to actually upgrade all my shit.
It's just painful because much of my shit doesn't have a working upgrade path (for example, you just flat-out can't migrate VirtualBox VMs to bhyve and expect reasonable success...) and time for such efforts is... Lacking.
-
@Tsaukpaetra I'm pretty sure PHP doing anything you expect it to is a bug.

I'll ask a Dev....
OK, you can't but I can. I'll do that for you now!
Very kind, thank you.Except, it's now 20 minutes later and there seems to be some trial-and-error going on with the terminal tools...

Thankfully it wasn't as expensive as your Hawai'i-trip probably is.

Status: Just looked at the weather forecast again. Two months ago I had booked an examination of my running style - that one had been recommended by my sports doctor because I'm getting shin splints in both legs after running more than 1 km. He found no problems with my tendons, bones or muscles and my nerves are actually conducting above average.
Which only leaves the possibility that I'm doing it wrong. There are only a few places here in Hamburg where you can do such an examination properly and the waiting time was pretty long - thus the two months, in fact it's this Tursday afternoon at 3 pm.
Which will most likely be the hottest day in the year.
I'm so fucked. Unless they have AC.
