How many computers were there? I regularly gather 4 semi-gaming machines in one room and never noticed any significant temperature changes.
My dad runs a space heater next to his computer. I'm not sure why he thinks that's a good idea.
Meanwhile, my computer could double as a space heater if I put some load onto it. I had to move it out from under my desk because it would get way too warm under the desk, cooking pretty much everything from the waist down. Granted, it became a bit better after I replaced the dual HD5870s with one GTX970, but it's still 130W CPU + 300W GPU, both aircooled, if doing full load.

I realized today that I had an OFF_BY_ONE_ERROR in my calculations of my own age. I've been saying/thinking I'm 36 for this whole past year. I'm really only 35, turning 36 in a couple weeks.
I kept doing the math, thinking "that's not right, I know I'm older than that." Sigh.

edit thread here: https://what.thedailywtf.com/topic/24864/it-s-a-date-how-did-boy_medium-dark_skin_tone-fuck-up-idiot-proof-code-now
Just got asked to "look into something".
A while ago I wrote a calendar control for us. Basically, the jQueryUI calendar widget inside a .ascx. It handles localization, date defaulting, formatting, everything. You are supposed to just drop it on a page-- optionally giving it a date range with .Net DateTime objects-- and on postback, you get a DateTime object.
Apparently it "isn't working" for a customization done for an Australian client.
It was done by -- the dev with the broken monitor, who is no longer with us.
So taking bets on what's broken. The top and bottom contenders are:
TOP: He ignored all the documentation about using standard .Net and Javascript date objects, and did string concatenation, which then broke in a different date/time format, which is exactly what this control was meant to address
BOTTOM: Lorne's code has a bug.
Chime in with your own!
edit Imma going to be posting multiple replies, so I'm actually going to move this to it's own thread.
-
Uh-oh. Right off the bat I have a bad feeling.
I should see
<%@ Register Src="~/Controls/Calendar.ascx" TagName="Calendar" TagPrefix="uc1" %>
Instead I see
<%@ Register Src="~/Controls/CUSTOMERNAMECalendar.ascx" TagName="CUSTOMERNAMECalendar" TagPrefix="uc1" %>
Which means he either built his own control (eek), or "customized" the existing one rather than just using all the fucking methods, properties and events built in.
Time to dig deeper.

Status: Maybe, just maaaaaaybe, if one is trying to figure out where a stored procedure went off the rails and whether it's getting any rows that meet a specific condition with its INSERT INTO... SELECT, one should copy the select out into a separate window for debugging. Instead of putting WHERE "clause that shouldn't happen" into the editor within the "ALTER PROCEDURE..." statement that you told SQL to script out so you could try to find why the procedure had a truncation error.
And even failing that, maybe, just maaaaaaaybe, one should make sure they remove any of said WHERE clauses when they figure out that the issue was that they transposed two of the column names between the INSERT INTO and the SELECT and were trying to insert VARCHAR(5000) data into a VARCHAR(6) column.
But no. Our intrepid hero, , he done did neither of those things. And then wondered why the downstream function was 25,000 rows short because this intermediate function suddenly started putting 0 rows into the intermediate table, instead of the expected 17,000.

Fun fact: when setting up a server from scratch, literally nobody remembers to do that.
Nobody. Ever. In the history of computing.
Eventually they remember to install the "OBCD-- OBDC? whatever the fuck" drivers, and then forget about it compeltely.

Yeah, so? Easy peasey with an extension cord. Never plug directly into the socket. That's a good way to kick the device and break the port

@pie_flavor If it was that, there would be slightly more documentation. Whereas the people who designed this hate documentation almost as much as they hate writing tests. Or simplicity.

An earlier version of this thumbnail contained a hidden message in a language that's been dead for 250 years. Here is the corrected version of the thumbnail:
