STATUS: Best friend just got fired at work. This sucks :(
-
@sloosecannon Did he deserve it?

No
(what kind of answer did you expect here, of course I'm gonna say no)
-
@sloosecannon Are you being honest to yourself about it? He must have be fired for a reason. People just don't get fired without a reason.
I have had to recommend people that I like and consider friends should be fired to my boss in the past (and they were fired). Good people, just wasn't doing the job.

Yes, lucas, yes I am. There was a reason. He didn't deserve it.

Either they weren't really friends, or you're a sociopath. Cause that's ridiculous.
Anyways, this is a stupid discussion to have right now, and you're just pissing me off. So....

No it isn't. I know we've had our disagreements so I am going to put this under "I think he is evil/Troll" so I ain't going to take it personally.
I have been friends with people at work that were under performing that were basically putting the rest of the team under pressure with their fuck ups.
I've had to bring this up to the manager because it was putting the whole of the team into disrepute. We had one guy that fucked up all the time (didn't check his work), which ended up with me spending hours after work fixing it before the sprint deadline. So I had to take up their slack. As much as I was friends with him and was good mates with him ... he took me for granted.
It isn't nice to do, I don't take any pleasure in it. But if for example if the core hours are 10-12 / 2-4 and the guy walks in every fucking day and 10:05, doesn't stay late (because I fucking was). Unfortunately I am going to have to recommend he is let loose.
Anyways, this is a stupid discussion to have right now, and you're just pissing me off. So....
I didn't do anything to piss you off. I just asked you a simple question whether you were being loyal to your friend (which is fine, I understand) or were making an objective judgement.
I can see you were doing the former.
-
@lucas1 said in The Official Status Thread:

No. I'm mad, and upset that my friend got fired. And you asking "Did he deserve it" adds nothing to this conversation. Except make me madder, of course.
-
@sloosecannon Why was he fired then? You don't get fired for nothing.

Damn
C#Java devs trying to write C++ (yeah, we had one from another team "trying" to help)FTF us. Same effect though; code written by people who don't know how to manage memory ends up really sucking and they end up asking me to fix it all. What I end up with looks not very much like what they started out with other than in the general method and class names (as I also get rid of all the stupid C tricks that aren't needed in C++ such as passing around arrays as
Thing*
and a length…)

Yeah, that's the natural response.

@weng Sorry dude. @sloosecannon is lying. He knows full well why his mate got booted. It was probably because he was shit.
He instead of telling the truth called me a sociopath instead.

Because only sociopaths throw their friends under the bus. That's... I can't even believe you're saying that right now.
I do know full well why. And I'm not going to share it on a forum full of scum and villany, because it's not my story to share, and I'm not going to betray the trust of an actual friend just to saisfy the curiosity of some random Internet troll. I do understand why, but it could have been handled in a way that didn't screw this guy over, and that's why I'm pissed. So GTFO with this bullshit.

Status: Anyways, now on to making a C# wrapper around checking the status and starting/stopping/recreating a LocalDB instance. Fun...

No. Work is where you can make friends but it isn't like school.
If you friend is fucking up and he is causing you problems (like I said and you didn't bring up). You gotta mention to your manager.
If he keeps on doing it after being told by the manager, then he will eventually get fired.
I didn't want the guy to be fired. I didn't throw him under the bus. I just said "this guy didn't doing X, Y and Z properly and it caused me to do spend 6 hours a day extra fixing his shit, have a word with him".
If he doesn't do that that is his fault. Not mine.
I do know full well why. So you know he got fired because of legit reasons, otherwise you wouldn't use a fucking star wars quote in your reply.

New Nvidia drivers, my logitech headset isn't working with it. I fucked around and it just isn't working. My secondary soundcard for the amp works as always (SoundBlaster EX PCI card, it always fucking works).
Wanted to do a stream and show me swearing a lot while shooting people. But it isn't happening.

Status: Tomorrow there'll be some wailing and gnashing of teeth because literally half my physics course got an F.
Then again, a) it's Quantum Mechanics, at some point you have to remember about waves and particles and interference and shit and b) if you're still not able to do a simple calculation of a wavelength given the frequency and speed of light then I honestly can't be arsed to dumb this stuff down even further.
Basically, if you cannot even remember this simple scheme then don't expect wonders:
Can you differentiate between two possible paths a photon might take?
If yes: You get a blob of light. If no: You get an interference pattern.
-
@rhywden Did the photon go through a "young slut" ... I mean "young's slit".

Point of order: Don't you teach grade school? I went to a good school, and there was literally no path you could take that exposed you to quantum mechanics.
That said, have you melted their faces with the three polarizer demo? It's hard to viscerally "get" QM until you see something that literally requires it.

It was mentioned in science class via the famed particle-versus-wave thing, but not more beyond that.

Gave up and and am now just reconstructing the Process object each call. NFC how performant that is, but seeing as I don't plan on doing it more than a few times a minute (maybe), I don't think it's that bad...

10/10 logic
I like how you're making judgements about something you know literally nothing about. But then again, that's... Not quite surprising.
Whatever, not doing a flame war in the status thread. Feel free to have the last word here, I'm sure it will have some more excellent logic.

@sloosecannon I realize you're probably not in a place where you can easily consider this with complete objectivity, because it sounds like your friend was legit and the firing was unfair. That sucks, and you're right to be pissed at the outcome. However, consider, if you did have a friend/co-worker who was always foisting off work onto you, not because they were overworked or behind a mad learning curve, but because they're generally incompetent and/or too lazy. That's not really the behavior of a friend. Working your ass off covering for them is not fair to you, because you deserve to get credit for your full work potential, not have it sapped by all the help you're giving him; it's not fair to your other co-workers, because they'll have to pick up the slack for both of you and anyway they could have a legitimately produtive employee in the place of this slacker; it's not fair to your boss because you're blocking his or her ability to objectively measure employee performance and/or try to fire bad employees and hire and retain good employees; it's not fair for your friend, because you're just enabling his shitty work ethic. Friends don't enable for friends.
@lucas1 what I said above; maybe this guy was an alright drinking buddy, but if he was putting you under the gun by not lifting his weight at work, it shows the sort of "friend" he actually is. He might remain a decent enough drinking buddy, but you have to protect yourself from his irresponsible and juvenile behavior in the workplace. You shouldn't have to bust your ass and work unpaid overtime just so that he can jerk off all day and hit the pub at beer o'clock. He's the sort of person that you take care not to have to rely on for anything because you know he can't be trusted. I wouldn't really call that a "friend". Also it's probably totally irrelevant to the situation and it's pretty bad taste to assume that ^'s friend was just a shitty employee who deserved to be fired.

Yeah. I still wouldn't take "go to manager" as the first response to that, though. But that's definitely not what's happening here. It's a... Weird position where he's technically fireable but he's not affecting anyone else. I can't go into more than that without being more doxxy about my/his job than I want to in the status thread.

@onyx It's impossible to understand all of it at once, as I understand it. Something about a Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle.

The lights are just flair. The important thing is the actions you can take on the right.

I think you need to reattach your standard-out and error-out each time you launch.
Or just make a new Process object, it's not like there's much to them once they've exited. It's just a path and a string of arguments.

Have one of those "speedpass" keychain things for one of the gas chains here. It's been, like, a decade since I had a credit card attached to it (I just use it for the points). Mainly because I couldn't be arsed to figure out their online system back in 2005 when the card expired.
Now, I'm all "hmm, paying at the pump so I don't have to take Molly out of the car would be useful", but none of the pumps are set up to take the FOB as points, and a different CC as payment. Fine, whatever, I'll finally hook a real CC up to my thing. (Because I want my points, fuck-damnit).
The website remembers my email address, and still has my FOB number on file. But to reactivate the account, it needs that last four of my credit card.
How the hell am I supposed to remember that? It expired a fucktime ago, and I've replaced it with other credit cards since.
Does 0000 work? No. Does 8273 work? No. Does a few other guesses work? No.
But... strangely enough, it hasn't said "too many attempts".
........... okay then.
{one Greasemonkey script later}
Imma brute forcing 10000 numbers! (Unless my script fucks up and doesn't register the successful one, of course).

Status: So apparently Oracle is going to be getting a lot of money from Google. Because Java is cancer, and if you use it to make money, you owe Oracle more money than you are giving them. And because Google is horrifically stupid and doesn't check first to see if there will be problems with their plans before spending billions of dollars and getting millions of developers and companies locked in.
It's a good thing Google is planning to just replace Android entirely. Good for Google, at least. Assuming people feel like adopting an entirely new system with new programming languages, and throw everything they know away. That never works for anyone else, but maybe it will for them. After all, your phone will still have Chrome on it.

@magus said in The Official Status Thread:

To be clear, that's if you create a Java-based platform, copying 11,500 lines of Oracle's code to do so (rather than doing a clean room implementation), and use it to make money... well, yeah. Not if you use the language to make money.
