Atari ST case is total toast on the bottom part. The top is totally fucked but I reckon is more repairable than the bottom half.
I found a new bottom half on ebay. I bought some plastic cement. I reckon like some mental jigsaw (spent the last two nights fitting it together) I can put the whole top part into one piece without it being obvious to the casual eye that it was once smashed.

That seems... extremely unlikely. And using AES to work around encoding issues is like using a (computationally expensive) sledgehammer as a flyswatter.

Because he has 4 devices?
One appears to be a Phillips VCR remote, one is an LG TV remote, on a soundbar remote, and one is a DirecTV remote.

Where is the one place in a room with a TV that you don't need a TV remote?
-
@ben_lubar I suspect the intended answer is 'right next to the TV', but it depends on the TV.

If your TV remote is stored next to your TV, you need to stand up and walk over to the TV in order to use the remote. At that point, it's no longer a remote. It's a local.

Not in the room.
It's entirely possible it's kept there because nowhere else in the room is it safe to keep such things.

@gąska I notice a significant change in temperature with my machine on and running in a smallish room. During the winter it's even bigger.

That's... uh... not how heat works.Nonsense. He just needs more layers of insulation around the computer. This should pretty effectively keep the computer from heating up the room. Just make sure to seal up the seams; air leaks can let some heat out. Even better, this should only be necessary temporarily, as the computer will probably soon stop heating up inside, too:

He frequently boots up his computer just to install updates, do an antivirus scan, and immediately turn it off again. I've been trying to explain to him that viruses can't infect a computer that's not turned on.

When I was single my normal diet consisted mainly of cheap ramen noodle, hash browned fried potatoes, eggs, canned chili beans, rice, tomato, and bologna sandwiches.
I guess you'd probably be hindered by lack of a decent kitchen. Still, in a pinch, you can do a decent amount of cooking in a microwave.

I'd like to see you try cooking hash browns in a kettle. The result might be edible, but I don't think it would be hash browns...
Granted, I don't think you can cook them in a microwave very easily either. (I haven't ever been desperate enough to try.)

Well they wouldn't really be "browns" in the same way boiled potato strips aren't fries, but the point is possibility of making edible stuff outside of a True Kitchen.

@anotherusername If only I was actually doing that, and not using some stupid library, at a level of abstraction where XML never entered the picture. Sure, some may come out somewhere, but that's about as relevant as telling me I'm programming in machine code because my code gets compiled.
