Status: I just realized that in two months my workload will lessen severely. And a month after that, it'll lessen again.
Basically, one of my physics course will begin their final exams phase. During said phase there's no regular lessons for them anymore. Which will make every other Thursday a free day for me.
In May, another of my classes will begin their final exams phase. Which will make every Tuesday a free day. Couple that with a Friday which is already free...
... I probably shouldn't point that out to my colleagues. They might murder me.

I did not try that during my visits to Tundraland. And I'm quite ok with that.

You might get bored enough to try it?

Status: Strongly desiring to mail a vial of anthrax to whoever wrote that web component where you get an auto-playing video as soon as the page loads, which then unpauses itself after you pause it because the page loads so slowly that page-completion events fire seconds after you think it's done, which you then pause again, and which then takes up the lower-right quadrant of the screen and blocks everything you're trying to see as soon as you scroll past it. These are worse than the old exit dialog box that would run away from your mouse.

YouTube allows absolutely zero nudity.
False. Porn is not allowed. However:
A video that contains nudity or other sexual content may be allowed if the primary purpose is educational, documentary, scientific, or artistic, and it isn’t gratuitously graphic.
If I'm reading the rest of it correctly, though, any allowed videos containing nudity will almost always be age-restricted.
-
@mott555 There's an even worse version: You get an autoplaying video which autoplays for a second and then would automatically stop - but due to the automatic reflex you've already clicked on the "pause" button which turned into the "play" button just a nano-second before.
And then the whole thing loads an advertisement.

Car got booted.
In a private garage. Having arrived well after 5pm (parking in that garage is free after 5). In a city where there are literally no regulations or licensing requirements to boot a car on private property.
That said, there are very much licensing requirements for operating a private paid parking lot in the city, and this very much violates those. I happen to have the mayor's phone number right here from a prior life (he was a dirty environmentalist hippie then, not mayor).
I also happen to know the local bar owners, who pay serious money to have that garage be free after 5.
This will be fun. And the most expensive $125 they will ever make.
I hope you'll come back to tell us how it went down.

So I was causally browsing the web. First Firefox crashed. Just shut down without managing to display the crash dump submitter. Restarted. Certain websites would crash the tab upon load. Weird... Try starting Chrome. Chrome refuses to start. The process is there but not doing anything. Oh well. Try to start Edge. Screen goes completely black with just a mouse pointer and the computer needed to be power cycled. At least everything is back to normal now.
Did you restart the Delivery Optimization Service?
-
@djls45 The Delivery Optimization Service can still go fuck itself. It does not seem to be running right now on my home computer at least. On that topic we're wondering if it and the other parts of Windows Update are causing issues with some computers at work. Also, the main switch at work may be broken as there's been some other weird network issues happening too.
-
@anotherusername The city is now reviewing their operating permit. You know. In connection with the downtown revitalization project. It's projected to add 800 parking spaces worth of demand dontchaknow, and they need to be safe and secure.
They also have the contract for jury duty parking. It would be way more cost effective to move that into the city garage that's closer to the courthouse anyway.
-
Status: speaking of Windows Update, I got this Google ad presented to me.
Yes, let's get rid of WSUS and fill it with cloud!
-
@weng nice! Any chance you'll get the money back though?
-
@anotherusername Negative. Boot collection is completely unregulated. Can sue over it, but that'll be a big fat inefficient use of my time.
City council considered regulating it when they first appeared in 2013 but the Business First element shot it down.

We are moving offices over the weekend.
After checking out what feels like hundreds of offices, the management has decided, until they get their shit together, to temporarily lease a few rooms in a fancy coworking space.
Because, according to COO, "the space radiates with creative energy".
The office is in the midst of a pedestrian zone, with ALL garages around it booked to the brim. Who the hell decided to put office space there!?
Monday is NOT gonna be fun.

Status: This is why I hate giving on-the-spot time estimates for feature changes.
How long to change where is say "OFF" on disabled times to "DIS", but only on one screen?
I'm guessing probably half an hour, but only if
Great! do that.Turns out the text for
FooTime
objects that have a disabled (null) time components is from a literal in itsToString()
. Ok, so we make it a private member variable instead with a default of "OFF", add an extra constructor that provides adisabledText
parameter and change the appropriate object creations to use that constructor?Nope, because the pickers that allow you to set a time to disabled call a static function
getDisabledTime()
inFooTime
that calls the original constructor and hence gets aFooTime
that says "OFF". Ok, so make a newgetDisabledTime
that has a parameter for the text you'd like on the disabled object...except the time picker doesn't know what that is, so it now has to have a constructor parameter and, and...It's now horrible and I just want to refactor the whole lot. And it took hours.

change
lblOnOrOff.Text = If(Disabled, "OFF", "ON")
to
lblOnOrOff.Text = If(Disabled, If(HttpContext.Current.Request.URL.ToString().Contains("ThatOnePage.aspx"), "DIS", "OFF"), "ON")
That now-larger bowl of spaghetti is now the next guy's problem.

On Android, but I guess this would do:
StackTraceElement[] stacktrace = Thread.currentThread().getStackTrace(); String caller = stacktrace[2].getClassName(); _someTimeLabel.setText(barTime.isDisabled() ? (caller.contains("ThatOneFragment") ? "DIS" : "OFF") : barTime.toString());
That's nearly a war-crime. I like the way you think :)

Been working with VS2017 on my hobby project.
The main product at work is a VS2012 solution.
Did some work on a legacy customer in a VS2008 project today.
Every time I go back a version, two thinks strike me:
- I do miss some of the newer features the next version has. Better syntax highlighting or intellisense, or slightly easier keyboard shortcuts.
- The older versions are so goddamn much faster. In everything. Opening projects, opening files, navigating the solution, scrolling, typing.
Fucking "new" versions of everything sucks.

I hear that both of those should be easy enough to fix with resharper, which makes the old version nearly as feature-rich and slower than the new.

Resharper. For when you don't want "Let's use a regex for that" to be your ONLY problem.

read()

I have no idea where to go from here or how to approach this, since everything is supposed to "just work"...
