@cvi turning numbers into strings is hard.
-
@blakeyrat so set a filter that automatically puts those messages in a "not very important" folder (apply a label + archive), then.
inb4 "not everyone uses gmail you jerk". To that I have just one thing to say: Use Gmail.

(I bet the guy at Microsoft who wrote the "your virus scan finished and there's nothing wrong" notification has the same condition. If there's nothing wrong, then there's no user action required. If there's no user action required, why is this a notification?! Fuck you!)
The worst one was, of course...
But that one is in the league of its own.
-
@cartman82 my guess: an important webmaster got annoyed when the browser didn't tell people that their site was secure
-
Well, have you stepped in with debugger to see which function is wrong - printf or isnan?
My bet is on printf, but who knows.The problem also appears when I set
x
tonan
manually (and even if I statically assignstd::numeric_limits<double>::quiet_NaN()
to it) -- so my money is onisfinite
/isnan
/fpclassify
(the three are at least consistent with each other).As far as I can tell from debugging/disassembly, something has turned my standard functions into nops. :-/
Originally, I had an
assert( std::isfinite(x) )
there, but that never triggered. Now -plot twist-assert( x == x )
works "just fine" for finding whenx
becomesnan
.

I guess the guy is talking out of his ass.
I thought we were done with discussing Mar... Oh, talking. Never mind.

I still can't even put myself in the head of someone who thinks they need an OS notification so they can snap-to every single time a "Get 20% coupon at InternetRetailer.com!" comes into their email box. What the fuck kind of weird genetic mutation do you have that makes that sound like a desirable thing?
That's a good point. Maybe someone at Google will notice that people don't want/need to be notified of those, and treat them as lower priority and not popup a notification, and implement that idea like 5 years ago
-
@timebandit I'm getting it on stock android 8.1. I wanna say it was added in 7.0 if you connect your phone to a PC.
It's been around longer than that, probably since version 4 or 5. But different manufacturers/custom roms may not have it.
-
I wanna say it was added in 7.0 if you connect your phone to a PC.
Just tried it and yes, this also happen on my phone.
The notification is there to let you easily switch connection mode (charge only, Transfer files in MTP mode, PTP mode, etc)
You can disable that notification.Why do you connect your phone to a PC if you only want to charge it ?
PC ports are lousy power source
-
@timebandit said in WTF Bites:

Sometimes that's all you have around. At work I don't have a USB adapter handy, and even if I did the plugs aren't easily accessible, whereas my computer is right there.
-
@cartman82 that's nothing compared to "this help file hasn't been search indexed, what kind of search indexed would you like?" that we had to live with for like 5 Windows versions. Whoever added that one neglected to include the "I don't fucking care, just open the help you dumbass" button.
-
@timebandit see discussion in Blakeyrat buys an Android phone thread. You can't disable that.notification specifically, you can only disable all notifications from System. (Not what any sane person wants.)
So if you want to see notifications of important security updates, you also need to see "this phone is plugged in".

Let me guess: it's 555 ?
No. My location into its posted here (and presumably available via Google) will lead to one of approximately three area codes though. The fun is in the guessing!
Let it be known though, if you ask me if this is Tsaukpaetra, I will never lie to you.

emails are notifications unless you're @blakeyrat

What the fuck kind of weird genetic mutation do you have that makes that sound like a desirable thing?

Well, if one uses Google Inbox like I keep suggesting, you can turn notifications on and off per category (promotions, social, business, etc.) (the categories are also auto-assigned). But an email about, say, a time-sensitive event, such as a teacher saying "OK I've granted you an extension on this online quiz, complete it in the next two hours please" (which happened yesterday) is something I absolutely do want notifications about. So YMMV, but it's definitely a feature I care about.
-
@blakeyrat said in WTF Bites:
Notifications are for things that require user interaction, not just completely random shit like, hm, to give an example: "your phone is charging over the USB cable". Fucking Android.
Notifications are for things you need to be notified about. It's in the name. Things which require user interaction, yes, but also messages to let you know something is done, for example. And emails do require user interaction; namely, a response. Or a dismissal, or simply reading it.

Gmail is crap. Use Inbox.
When I tried it, it would only allow Gmail accounts. I'd like to have all my mail accounts in one place, thankyouverymuch.
-
@rhywden I use inbox for all of my accounts.
It helps that I only have one email account
-
@rhywden I think there's some way to add the account using the Gmail app? Unsure. It's not like I actually need all of Inbox's features with my @8chan.co account or anything. Gmail accounts are still the best, just not the actual interface.

Not that I found, no. You can have multiple GMail accounts. But no Imap.

Then I guess you can't. Still, Inbox is the best for Gmail accounts.
Also, inb4 crazy rant about the superiority of POP3

@rhywden auto forward to a Gmail address that's on inbox

Yes. I can't remember exactly how I did it, but it did work. Until the fucking fuckers fucked the other fucking end up behind a complicated VPN.
-
WTF with these resolution options though.
What if I wanted a 600x800 desktop? Less bandwidth consumed, less phone memory wasted, seems like a good idea overall...
Instead we get options for 4k video. I don't think that's going to go well over 3g...

@kt_ Who hurt you?
Me? No one, but a 5m cable in a workplace tends to be not such a good idea.
-
@kt_ Right, I thought you were talking about the wall adapter and that your workplace had some kind of crazy "absolutely no electrical devices unless they're company-issued" policy.
But still, you can just tuck the cable away somewhere, you don't have to leave it lying around for everyone to trip over.
(You also don't have to use it as a makeshift whip when someone displeases you. You can if it's worth it to you, but you don't have to.)
-
More importantly though, getting that charger and cable would cost money and take time to ship here, whereas I can not buy those things and continue doing what I'm doing for free.
-
@kt_ Right, I thought you were talking about the wall adapter and that your workplace had some kind of crazy "absolutely no electrical devices unless they're company-issued" policy.
Thankfully, no. But please don’t give them any ideas.
But still, you can just tuck the cable away somewhere, you don't have to leave it lying around for everyone to trip over.
Well, if you need the 5m, you probably can’t work around that.
(You also don't have to use it as a makeshift whip when someone displeases you. You can if it's worth it to you, but you don't have to.)
That’s actually a must for surviving in corporate offices.

You could hide it behind some desks or something...

The gmail app on my phone allows it (v7.11.5.176568039) - I have it hooked up to 2 imap accts and gmail accts (one being work).

With Vivaldi's mail service, I just set up folders and filters. And set my email app not to notify me for some folders. xD

Yes, nobody's debating that. The Gmail app lets you add as many IMAP and POP3 accounts as you want. However, the Inbox app only lets you use Gmail accounts, whether @gmail.com or Google Apps for Whatever.

I didn't know they already had prototype Cat 9 cabling out. I wonder if it connects easily with the intended receptacles. I should do some field testing, for science...

Wait, outlook will refuse to reply to a recipient it doesn't know?
Or, it does reply, but that reply is addressed to an invalid recipient and the server sends a bounce-back?

Bounced, but the recipient's domain is the same as mine, so it's all on Office365.
