The best part about the way this is implemented is that spammers are posting from the same IPs and revealing their previous spam to me which I can delete all of at once with click->shiftclick->click.
-
My favorite spam so far is this advertisement for a spambot that "can bypass almost any anti-botnet protection" that was caught by possibly the dumbest anti-spam algorithm ever created.

Let me guess: You look for profanities in the post. If there are none, it must be spam.

By the way, more websites should implement shift-clicking of checkboxes. It's amazingly useful when deleting things. @fbmac would love it.

Update: I marked all comments made before this change that looked like they contained links or email addresses (using
LIKE '%[something]%'
several times in an SQL query) for moderation, so if you posted one of the 46652 remaining comments I need to go through (the vast majority of which are indeed spam, I think I've found three or four non-spam ones this whole time) and would like to get it approved sooner than "whenever I get to it going backwards on the chronological list", send me a link to the comment (or the article or whatever. just some way to know where to find it).

I feel like a lot of recent data breaches have been because someone took that advice literally and didn't realize how bad of an idea actually doing what that joke says is.
We had a data breach because the administrator username was admin and the administrator password was admin, we had a data breach because someone posted all of their credentials along with instructions on how to log into the corporate VPN on GitHub... My guess is the next data breach will be because someone said "Runescape hides your p***word if you say it in chat" and the chief security officer of some multinational corporation decides to give it a try.

@ben_lubar Some commenter on the front page blamed thedailywtf for creating discourse ( https://thedailywtf.com/articles/comments/an-emphasized-color#comment-488266 )
... on top of making that discourse thing which messes up and completely misses the point how a proper (*bb, SMF, vBulletin, IPB and number of others) forum system should be organized and makes navigation a mess, they're so smart and amazing.

I'm curious as to how much spam follows this exact formula:
[COMPANY NAME] wrote [on an article posted over a year ago]:
[Compliment to the site owner, without taking the time to look up the name of the site owner, the name of the site, what the site is about, or the title of the article they're commenting on.] [Synonym for "also check out"] [COMPANY NAME]
Blocking comments that end with the commenter's name as a link would probably block a significant amount of spam and approximately zero legitimate comments from people who aren't intentionally trying to make a reference to this type of spam.
-
There are also a lot that look like this:
How many people who read this website do you think would actually take that seriously? I'd hope the number is zero.
Anyway, if you want to change your spouse phone or your spouse school grades, you can contact that hacker person I guess.
I should get a spouse snack if I'm going to keep moderating this stuff so I can keep my spouse blood sugar up.
-
In the morning, I'll process any comment from page 671 on first (assuming someone else doesn't go through and clean up the queue before I wake up).
I've noticed a lot of spam IPs have 3 comments, with either 0 or 1 of those comments being posted while logged into a GMail account. Another common category of spam IPs is someone who tries to post an HTML link as their username and then comes back and posts one or more comments with that HTML link instead appended to the end of the comment body.
The sneakiest one I saw was a long post in Chinese with two letters linked to some website and the rest as plain text. The underline on the link and the bolding of the text were almost impossible to see without viewing source. I've also seen a few that were copies of comments from earlier in the thread with links added to the end. I even saw one that was just
<a href="https://google.com">Google</a>
which I assume was an attempt to make Google get marked as a thing that spammers post.Joke's on the spammers - the algorithm never learns, so you can't poison it. I should probably add something to the moderation queue page that shows a list of the links in the post, just so empty or otherwise hard-to-see links don't get through easily if the rest of the post looks normal.

Ah. You went from a Pee Pee spam comment to... 641 pages of comments? And the last one suffers from the one-off "post doesn't actually exists because page doesn't exists" bug?

I've been clearing it to a multiple of 50 so I can refresh the page in the morning and everything that shows up is guaranteed to be new.

Ah. See, that amount of context is worth so much more than a relatively featureless screenshot of a backend admin page that says... very little, and what little it does say is hidden around for you to hunt....

Web. Crawler. Dot. Com.
Do you remember that one that was called like "pile on"? Or something like that. There was also one that came out a few years ago that was called like "Torj" or some equally un-memorable gibberish name.
EDIT: Dogpile.com. It still somehow exists.

Only 630 pages of comments left! And you know what 630 means:
By the way, if anyone sees any spam comments that aren't hidden for moderation, send me a link so I can fix that.

paging @ben_lubar
that article here got a pretty long moderation backlog, too
And i know one shouldnt be marked as spam (not telling which one here since i posted anonymously to disconnect some information from my username)

Is this supposed to be at a reasonably decent semblance of complete? I resumed reading articles from where I left off (~1 year ago) and still I'm seeing quite a lot of comments "held for moderation". Is the moderation queue >1 year long?
This one for instance:
A lot of comments are held for moderation, and a significant number of comments that aren't held for moderation are actually spam...

ITYM. It "learns" more about spammers when you add more filtering rules, for a broad meaning of "learn".
-
Good for you, I guess?
