Memory usage is always irrelevant until you run out of physical memory. Then it's extremely relevant.
I've been having a lot of trouble with IO being the bottleneck on my computer. I have a 2TB internal hard drive that's about half full. The IO is usually split between three or four competing processes: Guild Wars 2 (which I think is still less than 30GiB total), my local BuildMaster installation (which probably has less than a gigabyte of data it's working with at a time, but it's C++ so there's a lot of files being read over and over), and everything else I'm doing (both on my computer and sometimes on a virtual machine).
A lot of the files on my computer don't need to be fast - they're things like backups of this forum, all of my video game screenshots for the last few years, and the local copy of my Google Drive contents.
How big of an SSD should I get, and what company should I buy it from?
(According to Speccy, I have this motherboard, which has 6 eSATA ports, and I only have 1 hard drive and 1 DVD drive, so I'm assuming I still have 4 ports unused.)

assuming you have a PCIE3 4x slot available, and a KabyLake or CoffeeLake processor with a compatible motherboard.....
the one i listed. you can set it up as either system RAM or as a SSD
-
120 will do if you just want to put, say, GW2 and BM on it, but you'll be happier with 250. If you want to avoid the eventual "I'm out of SSD Space" then go ahead and move to 500. If you want to be spendy, go with 1TB
Samsung (as long as it isn't the 840 EVO), Sandisk, Intel, Kensington, AData, Crucial, any major (flash) memory company with a recognizable brand really.

Then those should be on a HDD
-
@ben_lubar Intel and Samsung are usually the best brands. 480 GB is probably more than you need; ~250 GB should be fine. You can get a 250 GB SATA drive that will be noticeably faster for around $150. If you don't mind spending $500, though, go ahead and get a larger PCIE drive.

I have an i7-4770k CPU (Haswell according to Intel's website, so predating any of the "lake" lines).

Seriously, just go for an M.2

in that case. use this one: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147373
or its bigger brother if you have the cash. best i can do for that chipset.
-
@ben_lubar you should do work on a work computer that, and this is important, does not have Guild Wars installed.
Also buy a decent microphone or headset.
This is my advice.

Ok, but does the BuildMaster installation that automatically builds Dwarf Fortress hacking tools go on the work machine or the gaming machine?
-
@ben_lubar depends on which is more important: using it to test new Build master features, or having your loser dwarf programs.

he's right though. i keep a separate work PC at home (it's an i5 25mumblewumble) that has exactly enough software loaded to VPN into work for when i work remote. It's important to keep that separate because if i had steam on my work PC and i was remote i'd be in factorio like 900% of the time

i have the M.2 slot version not the monster PCI-e version but..... yes it does appear to work, it is measurably slower than DDR4 but it manages to keep up well enough that the difference isn't unberarable. the PCI-e version is significant faster and meant more for servers that want raw RAM, the M.2 version is intended more as a disc cache to be slapped in front of a spinning HDD and is speced more in line with that....
so..... if you have 600$ burning a hole in your pocket and want more RAM than you know what to do with then that's not the worst option in the world.....

Yeah ... 600$ is a bit on the pricey side of things. I have a a few other bits and pieces that would benefit more from an upgrade. Besides, not quite sure what I'd do with a huge pile of really slow RAM. Maybe in a generation or two if the prices go down (and the performance goes up).

The page wasn't loadable without logging in, and when you're logged in, the page shows your street address instead of your city in that field.

A 2TB that only had 1.8 GiB would be quite a remarkable lie, even by hard drive manufacturer standards.

@ben_lubar I wager once you crack open your case, you'll find that disk caddy unnecessary. Usually the drive slots have enough screwholes for drives of every size.

The screws to attach the mount to the case weren't needed, but the SSD wouldn't have been able to be attached to anything without the mount. The mount fit quite nicely with some parts that came with the case that converted its screw holes to a track thing that just slides in and is kept in place by the case cover.

Yes, I know. It's basically a high tech record player.
Except it has Dwarf Fortress on it.

Several times since I got the SSD, I've thought to myself, "this doesn't feel any faster" before quickly realizing that I was trying to mount a raptor in a no-mount zone and not in any way doing something that requires disk IO.

You should stop trying to mount your raptor when you can't use it. I'm sure that can't be good for the drive's lifespan.

@ben_lubar Just get something at 80 to 250 GB. Maybe 120 to 128 is the best compromise. Make sure that your OS and virtual machines are on it and presumably Buildmaster and its C++ toolchain are on it. Put the rest of the static data on an electromechanical drive. It could even be a "Green" drive.

Nah, if it's gonna be your boot drive you want at least 500. Less than that and you will eventually run out of space.

I've always been a bit curious how that works IRL, the two opposing default stances hardly match up for an effective session in many cases...

@sloosecannon How big are your VMs? Mine are about 25 GB. Most VM managers let you mount folders for the VMs to read static data from.

It was about $300 plus about $10 for a metal thing that let me fit it into a hard drive bay (the SSD is slightly smaller than a deck of cards) and a cable to plug it into my motherboard.
