Any good tabbed browsers on Android?
-
And by "tabbed" I mean with a proper tab bar, not this separate tab screen nonsense that Chrome moved to and all the other browsers seemingly followed.
I used Dolphin for a long time, but they removed the tabs at some point. Then I migrated to Opera Mini, but not only does it now shove full screen ads in my face, it also has problems bringing up the address bar - it seems like it's almost impossible to make it appear unless you scroll all the way up to the top of the page (losing your place in it), and there seems to be no way to lock it.
So, any alternatives?

I use Dolphin browser and the tab bar is very definitely still there at the top.

@maciejasjmj What's wrong with Chrome's system? Or are you referring to it having each tab treated as a separate app window? Because that's been gone for a while.

It's one tap more to switch tabs, and two more taps to close the current tab and get back to the previous one. Also it breaks my workflow and that will not do.

Wow, that's weird. This is how mine looks on cold open and after opening another tab. The tabs are always visible.
I can't see a settings option to enable or disable tabs either. Maybe worth raising it with the devs?Edit: maybe it's device resolution dependent or something along those lines?

It's one tap more to switch tabs
As long as you don't have to swipe across the tab bar to find the tab you want

It's usually the one just before the current one. 90% of the time I open a new tab is when I'm reading something, see a link or a phrase I want to Google, quickly skim it in a new tab, then get back to what I was reading.
Sometimes even just looking at the page title is enough. Something that tabs show better as well.

I'd guess screen size. Opera calls the Chrome brainworm mode "phone mode" and the reasonable mode "tablet mode", except it lets you switch between them. Too bad it stopped working right with some update.

[Chrome] Uh - you know you can swipe the address bar to move to previous/next 'tab'?
-
Checked if there was an addon for Firefox to do what you want. Doesn't seem to be, although there are a few tab addons that work on mobile too.
-
Chrome on Android does have a tab bar, but only if your screen is large enough. If you want even less room for your webpages on a small screen, then I'm not really sure which browsers support that.
-
@atazhaia Stock Firefox was still tabbed on Android last time I checked, though it only showed about 2 or 3 before going and creating a tab page.
-
@maciejasjmj How big is your screen?
Chrome on my 7" tablet has tabs, on my phone it does not. I'm guessing it's a function of screen size/resolution more than it is someone breaking shit just to mess with you. (I'm also not sure if they're running the same version of Android or not.)
-
Firefox for Android gives you basically the same interface as Firefox for anywhere else, including tabs, with no add-ons. Or at least it does for my tablet. Your experience may vary, of course.
-
@masonwheeler but then you have to deal with firefox scrolling on android...
-
@bb36e hmm ???
-
@masonwheeler IME (based on trying FF on android about a week ago) the android version's scrolling just doesn't feel responsive. It seems to lag behind my finger, and isn't as smooth as chrome. I say this as someone who uses FF on their desktop as their primary browser. :/

This. My phone thinks it's a phablet.
But, why would this make for "even less room for your webpages on a small screen"? It's not like the tab bar stays visible after you scroll down a bit... Unless it normally doesn't?

Ah right, I forgot about that.

To be fair, there was a time when it didn't, and that always showing the top (and sometimes bottom!) bars on an app at all times was the de-facto standard.
-
@bb36e That will be fixed later today, though if you have ABP that'll be messed up and if you have GreaseMonkey or Stylish they'll be (temporarily) gone.
-
How about design with thumbnail tab at the bottom?

Is this page taking bloody turns when scrolling?
It's like there's a raccoon on the scrollbar and the page has to swerve to not run it over.

That's actually kind of nifty, though I wouldn't think of it in a million years.
I still like tabs more, though.

:o ? How come? Fwiw i had the same issue on beta and nightly (v57). IIRC some of the quantum stuff (ie stylo) will make it to android after 57, and either way the scrolling issues were present on very simple pages. Iād be glad if they fixed it, though
-
@bb36e Oh, sorry, then they won't be fixed. 57, with all the crap that comes with it, releases today.
Anyone want an FBMac GET?

I recently had to reinstall it as it broke by crashing on opening any page.
When I launched it I had no tabs at the top. After a lot of swearing I found that if you click the icon shaped like a jigsaw puzzle there is a menu that has a circular button for 'tab mode'. Enabling that and the tabs were back at the top.
Might be still res/device dependent but worth a try.
