Actually, it is. The maximum value of wares you're allowed to import from non-EU countries is 700€. Everything after that has to be taxed. If you do not declare wares beyond that value and are caught the customs agents are required to bebin the proceedings for being tried for tax fraud. And yes, tax fraud is a crime.
But then we're pack to:
- Carrying the phone into the EU is legal.
- Carrying the phone into the EU without paying taxes on it is illegal.
The headline of that newspaper article says "going to New York to buy a phone and bring it back to Europe is illegal". The headline is wrong. It's only illegal if you do it with the intent of dodging taxes.
This is another case of me saying something incredibly obvious and being surprised when people don't get it and I have to explain it multiple times.

Hm. Must be different in your part of the EU. I got taxed for my $350 purchase from the US, on top of the normal customs fee.

So that's a genuine win for the Apple way of doing things. Personal space in the most crowded environment. Huh.

Galaxy Nexus: Face Unlock – 01:12
— Google NexusThat's "normal camera" face recognition though, while the iPhone X has "3D camera" face recognition, which I assume works a lot better, and the Lumia 950 uses iris recognition.
I've never used Android's face recognition because you have to hold your phone at a precise angle and distance for it to work, and it's easier to just enter the PIN. Maybe they should have put fisheye lenses on the front cameras so they could see me from the side.

The newest Surface has "3D camera", based on the Kinect technology (where it throws out a bunch of IR splotches that then get watched and parallaxed by IR-sensitive digital cameras). AFAICT, that same technology is in the iPhone X.

Like with Touch ID: they took an established technology and made it so user friendly that it became what it became.
I think that's a bad example, considering TouchID quite literally is the same as its non-Apple-taxed alternatives in terms of UX

@pleegwat Maybe.
But let's be clear: flying to New York, buying an iPhone X, and flying back to Europe is not illegal.

This is a crime that there is approximately 0% chance of getting caught for. Unless you bring back a suitcase of them who gives a damn?
Even better: I once bought a laptop for my dad while I was in the US, and because he was going to use it as a work laptop I was going to declare it anyway. When I got back to Germany, the customs office at the terminal was closed! I had to ask around and got told I had to leave the terminal and go to another one where the customs office was open. We managed to declare it in the end (other bureaucratic hijinks followed) but if I had bought it for my personal use, I wouldn't have bothered with that and nobody would have known...

So, a friend just informed me that the new iPhones have fast-charging. (Just like any decent Android from the last 2 years.) Will the new iPhones fast-charge with the included charger? Fuck no! You just get the standard slow iPhone charger with those. If you want fast-charging you will have to buy the special USB-C fast-charger and the special USB-C-to-Lightning charging cable first.
(Although, if you own any modern Apple laptop with a USB-C charger you just need to get the special cable.)
Instead of Apple just switching to USB-C to allow fast-charging off any supported charging outlet. Because I guess that's too simple and consumer-friendly.
Oh, it gets better. They are selling a Lightning to USB-C adapter for $49... but read the fine print:
cable not included
The cable, which uses the Monster Cable business model, costs between $25 and $35. They've at least improved their cable length bullshittery by offering a 2 meter cable, though. By Apple standards, that's a fucking long cable. So, in order you use your iPhone effectively, you have to buy nearly $100 worth of essential equipment that should have come with the fucking thing in the first place.
Apple continues to be a cult that's rivaling Scientology for the fleecing of its members.
Meanwhile my LG G6, which has pretty much all of iPhone X's features (sans wireless charging), costs about half of an iPhone X, came with a USB-C charger, and I bought a car charger (fast charge) for $15 dollars. And yes, it came with a cable. A fancy red one I might add.

The LG G2 did not come with USB-C. It was released in September 2013. The USB-C standard wasn't finalized until August 2014. The G3, G4, and G5 all had the standard (at time of release) micro-USB. The G6 does have USB-C port, but all US models also include wireless charging.
So, I'm guessing that you have a non-US LG G6, not an LG G2.

flying back to Europe
Fuck flying back. If this dipshit managed to find a $30/day place to stay in NYC, fucking STAY IN NYC! Defect and worry about immigration later.
Also, never tell anyone that you're paying $900/mo rent in NYC. It is absolutely legal for a NYC resident to murder you and assume your identity for a cheap rental.
@Karla can back me up on this.

Then I won't tell you how much rent I pay for a 3ish BR** with a bigger kitchen than my parents have.
**It is really a 2 BR, but they put a wall and a door on the end of the kitchen and called it a closet. We use it as storage.
We use what would have been the dining room for our BR.
We've also been here for 17 years (before gentrification) and the building was in receivership for 5 years, so no rent increases.
