@pjh Hasn't every Doctor crashed the TARDIS at least once? Heck, under Matt Smith's watch, it almost blew up the Universe!

I think it's pretty funny that grown adults actually care about Dr. Whom. The fact they're getting worked up over the genitals of a character in a kids show is hilarious

i'm pretty sure that if the genitals of a character are visible then it's not a children's show anymore.... at least in the majority of cultures i'm aware of.
but yeah, if the character in question is suitably child friendly according to the culture that it is designed for why would anyone care if they have innie bits or outie bits in the genital region?
-
@jaloopa I haven't cared even a tiny bit since they did the entire like 8 episode season where the show did nothing but crawl up its own butt.
-
@blakeyrat Which season was that one?

This is the other thing about Who MD's fans, they seem to spend every series complaining that it's crap compared to previous series and that the writer on this series is a hack and not as good as the other writers, but they still keep watching
-
@raceprouk I don't remember but the season finale was Clara going back in time and helping the Doctor steal the Tardis and replay the entire Doctor Who thing to ensure everything happened "correctly" or whatever. Like Hartnell was going to pick a working Tardis but she does "take this broken one, it'll be a lot more fun". But by the time we even got to the season finale the whole series had been so far up its own ass, I didn't even care enough to really pay attention. IIRC it also had an entire episode where the Tardis turned into a hot chick and tried to sleep with the Doctor and, IIRC, it had an episode where Mitchell and Webb were like dinosaur hunting robots or something? I dunno, the whole thing was awful.
The funny thing is I always thought it would be a cool thing to have an episode where he goes back in time and sets up the improbable coincidences that lets him "win" against the bad guys. In my head-canon that's already how I justify the episodes with horrible deus ex machina endings. But they fucked it up.
-
@blakeyrat Ah, that would be the last Matt Smith series (#7). Series 8 (Peter Capaldi's first) returned to a more typical style, but series 9 went weird again. I've not seen series 10, but i've not heard much good about it. But with a new guy at the helm for series 11, it may get good again.
-
@raceprouk It's not that it was bad (although it was bad), it was that pretty much every show was "let's talk about how great our own show is! Look at how much history we have! Look at us!"
And the whole time I was like, "ok I fucking get it, try telling a story maybe?" But they did not. They just did the same terrible deus ex machina ending, but with the added "look at us, look at us, look at how cool this show is, look at us" navel-gazing bullshit coated all over it. I don't think I've ever seen anything so self-congratulatory in my life.
I'd seriously watch the two Peter Cushing films a hundred times rather than watch that season of the show again.

@raceprouk If it makes you feel better, I first saw them in Rifftrax form. (They're actually pretty good. They came out before Rifftrax turned to shit repeating the same jokes over and over and before they added that horrible animated cartoon intro to their videos.)
The UFO in the second one is pretty amazing:
(rebel kicks a Dalek down a ramp)
Riff (Dalek voice): "OH NO I FORGOT WE ARE EASILY DEFEATED!"(rebels throw bombs at Daleks, which do no damage)
Rebel: "These bombs are useless!"
Riff: "They're the robo-men of bombs!"

I thought the first few episodes were OK, the ones in the middle, especially the ones with those monks … well, let’s say that after a few I was sort of wondering why I was still watching every week. I persevered, though, and the last couple were much better again — though that could simply be because of the ones before.
My theory is that Steven Moffat just needs to take a break. If you ask me, the last season of Sherlock wasn’t nearly as interesting as the ones before, and now Doctor Who went down much the same path.

I don't think it's the genitals. See if it was a trans woman, they would still get worked up.
-
I have a question. Who is this "they"?
Because the thing is: I haven't seen anybody upset about casting a woman as The Doctor, but I have seen about 40 tweets/posts here making fun of people who were upset about casting a woman as The Doctor.
But none of the people making fun have like provided a screenshot showing the people they're making fun of actually exist, so I'm starting to wonder if this is a case where people are mocking an imaginary entity.
Now, I'm sure someone somewhere is upset about the casting, with millions of people online it would be more unusual if there weren't. Still weird I haven't seen anybody with that viewpoint yet, not even indirectly. Usually when people are pointing or laughing at something like this they'll provide a 4chan screenshot of the kind of statement they're making fun of.
-

Except the first one, it seems they're more pissed off about the usage of your archaic ridiculous British titles than the gender of the star.
"OMG a Lord is NOBILITY! This is indeed something we should have in a developed country in the 21st century! I am British!!!"
Also how unsurprising is it that one of the complainers plays Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

What's related about CS:GO and this? CS:GO is a game about terrorists and police shooting each other.
-
@raceprouk and all of those people are fuckwits.
We're talking about a show featuring aliens and time travel and masses of handwaving. And the notion of a race of people that invent machines that are bigger on the inside, and the biggest complaint is, OMG THE NEW PERSON PLAYING THE ROLE HAS DIFFERENT GENES.
Also, since when did we care what Piers 'I'm not a misogynist but...' Morgan has to say?
The precise rules for regeneration have never really been laid out. In a show explicitly about change, we're complaining about change?
Things we have seen:
- characters who explicitly choose the form they regenerate into (Romana II)
- Time Lords explicitly mentioned as gender-swapping for life variety (Eleven, when talking about the Corsair in The Doctor's Wife)
- Time Lords explicitly having gender-swapped (Missy)
- Time Lords explicitly having gender-swapped with ethnicity changes (the General, Hell Bent)
- The Doctor becoming female and going off with a Dalek-enhanced Master (Curse of Fatal Death and it was even written by Steven Moffat; fuck off with your "it's not canon" bullshit)
And only because the hero of the story has changed, we now have a problem with this?

That pretty much sums up what I've endured of Torchwood. Good premise (yeah, it's an obvious side-story on DW, so what?), a couple passable actors, most episodes start pretty well and then seem to search for the best way to turn that into... nothing. Boring, long nothing.
The boxset I bought had faulty DVDs as well, so I managed to watch about 1.5 series and then threw the box in the garbage. Crap show, crap DVDs. Die.

Oh so that's what this thread was about.
Could've just said, not everyone here watches terrible news.Isn't she technically the 14th doctor because of a stupid stupid stupid stupid awful plotpoint, anyway?
Or because of the ~=~war doctor~=~ stuff?
15th doctor if you count both?My bet is that they'll ruin her Doctor Who by making her character either too flawless (to appease SJWs) or too useless (to appease SIWs).
However, if they can keep the character faithful to previous doctors (without being too similar, and with bringing her own unique style to the table, of course), they might just succeed. They will fail.

-
@unperverted-vixen Somehow MASH made a great movie-length episode without the navel-gazing. It actually told a story. That's the good example.
I don't care if it's a 50th or 500th anniversary, if you don't bother writing good TV, what the fuck are you celebrating? "We're celebrating 50 years of good TV by writing awful TV!"
-
@unperverted-vixen no, the50th was the Doctor making the choice to save the Time Lords rather than burning them a.ll.
Season 7, on the other hand, was to fix the mystery of "the fields of Trenzalore and the fall of the Eleventh" which was never going to live up to the Moffat-hype he'd given it. And it was a shitty story in a shitty arc, because it undermined the Doctor with "actually you didn't really win the day, because you were helped by this impossible person who fixes you everywhen all at the same time." It's fucking Coldplay Who. No one needs Coldplay Who.
-
@arantor Part of the problem I think is Moffat tried to continue what Davies was doing in making each season finale bigger and more ambitious than the last. After all, there's only so big you can go before it gets ridiculous.
-
@raceprouk it was ridiculous enough in season 5, how much bigger could the stakes get than "rebooting the entire universe"?
-
@arantor Rebooting the multiverse? :P
