@anotherusername You always hear of the question of if you could go back in time, whether you should murder Adolf Hitler. It has occurred to me that you could have the same effect (pre-empting the Nazis) simply by bribing the admissions officer who rejected dear old Adolf from art school. This would hopefully change the course of his life into something more benign.

Why'd you have to post that picture? It's bringing me down.

Vacation photo time! Here's a sample of the photos that I kept from the drive from Ontario all the way to PEI (the east coast). I CBA to upload the originals, so enjoy facebook's leftovers (side note: of the 1500ish I took, I only kept and edited 20ish, so maybe I should look back at them some time):

In case you were wondering what that crumpled tin can is... it originally would've looked something like this.

This collection of images of the Bodleian Library in Oxford, while not of the most impressive library interior, are actually extremely rare, and most likely the best images of the interior available anywhere online. Photography of this library, which dates as far back as 1487 during the Medieval period, is usually completely prohibited as it contains many priceless original books, including manuscripts of the gospels of the Bible from the 3rd century, a Shakespeare First Folio and a copy of the Gutenberg Bible (one of 42 left in the world). I was only allowed to publish these images on the condition that they be limited to 4 megapixels in resolution so unfortunately this is as detailed as they get. Although I do have 40 megapixel images on my hard drive, that’s where they will have to remain.

That's a weird restriction.

@RaceProUK if an analogue photo steals a portion of your soul, it stands to reason that a digital photo will steal the same portion for each pixel, so it makes sense to limit the resolution of photos that are shared.

What then happens to your soul if an analogue photo is converted to digital?

It depends on whether the conversion is lossy or not.

I have no idea if this is true, but it's what was said on Facebook where I found this:
A German photograher had fixed 16 cameras to get this shot for which he had to wait for 62 days. See the moon and sun together. This can be only seen again in 2035. Enjoy the shot.

I'm gonna say "not true". The moon shouldn't be illuminated like that if the sun's on the far side of it, which would have to be the case for this picture. Think of a flashlight on the opposite side of the room, with a baseball hanging between you and it, a little higher than your head. Most of it will be relatively dark from your perspective, not lit up (assuming no strong reflections or other light sources, etc.).
ETA: Astronomy StackExchange discussion of this very image, including some example photos showing approximately what the moon should look like in this instance.

Are you saying this isn't a photo taken when the sun was closer than the moon?

The sun being on the near side of the moon wouldn't imply it was closer than the moon
-
@Dreikin No, but, being both on the near side of the moon and in front of the camera, does.

That could depend on how wide an angle your lens has.

@Dreikin and on whether those trees are bent over backward overhead, so their tops are upside down behind you.

Definitely not taken this past weekend. You can see the mountains. (I wasn't in SF, but you probably couldn't see Angel Island either. Yeah, air quality was that bad.)
-
@dcon it's pretty safe to assume that you can't see anything from SF most of the time
