Yeah we should cap this at some reasonable number and display "and xxx more" @tgxworld

I foolishly middle-clicked all three to open them in new tabs.
About a minute later they finished loading....

Fortunately, they're going with a faceless person like thing:
Imagine the CDN Twitter would need if they followed discourse!
OTOH, I can't see how swapping out the egg makes any real difference to anything.

It means they won't get sued for using the term "new egg".
-

They mentioned in the article: the egg looks like a pleasant picture you might like to identify with, while the grey person-oid seems to say "your picture would go here, but it's not uploaded yet". New users will thus think more frequently "I should get a real picture" and be more likely to change it.
-
@Yamikuronue Yeah, I read that, but I'm skeptical.
-
@boomzilla You could probably grab your own data; what percentage of users stuck with the default CS guy vs what percentage stuck with the Discourse-style colorful-letter

A blank egg shape is easier to identify with than a silhouette of a human person? Maybe for someone who is an actual egg.
-
@hungrier As you are a fluffy dog?
The silhouette says "insert picture here" more clearly than an egg or a letter, is all. Mostly by convention.

Discofixing the problem!
https://meta.discourse.org/t/image-upload-permissions/58558/8?u=izzionOh, I see, your topic was inappropriately named. I have appropriately named it. Pray I don't censure you further.
This issue is a duplicate of https://meta.discourse.org/t/disallow-anonymous-users-from-viewing-image-file-urls/40335?source_topic_id=58558
Yeah, that's what we need to have fixed here.Let's take a look under the hood of the duplicate bug, shall we?
We had a talk about this and it needs follow-up
This is a very hard problem, it screws upavatarsCDNs
Yeah, this would totally break CDNs
Ok, well, that's totally acceptable for this use case, we're talking seriously private information here that must be kept under complete lock-down
We need this feature, and giving up the CDN for it is
-
"For the record: files = file attachments, images = images, pictures. very different things.."
-
I'm thinking we could do it in a middleware, but I'm sure @sam has a better idea
I'm sure that LITERALLY ANYONE has a better idea. Even .
This really screws up CDNs so it is a much harder problem than it looks.
Yeah, because no-one ever has solved the problem of using CDNs with file permissions, so there's not existing solutions you could maybe utilise.

I'm imagining a globally distributed RAID 0 filesystem now. Imagine physically losing your data files.

Last week I found a stack of floppies I thought I had lost. I have also forgotten two 3,5" disks in Rwanda once. So this is very imaginable.

@Lorne-Kates if you're going to use a rainbow flag to represent a gay person, is probably better than "man wearing turban" to represent a jew.

It's Discourse, so... DUH!
Also it had "peculiarities" and I bet they're not supported.

Yeah, like having the locale set to "Spanish" apparently. :D
-
@Tsaukpaetra Yes, also he got support :O
Got fixed by restoring from backup into a new instance in the end.
-
what's going on with Spanish locales to avoid an incompatible database in the future.
I'm going to be it's dates. Yeah.

@Tsaukpaetra Adding /u/ to Discourse, huh.

@Tsaukpaetra I wonder how long until the first clbuttic mistake happens after deployment. And I also wonder if it will permaban if the word "discourse" is mentioned in the same post as either "bug" or "inconsistent".

Oh god. Given how shitty their dev skills are, this is going to be AMAZING.
No one will even have to game it to associate "toxic" words with perfectly normal words. It'll do it on it's own, prevent anyone from posting, ban everyone, then delete the forum.

Even Alex's avatar was a variant of that back in the CS days. I do wonder if that product is still around; as far as ASP based web-forums, it was probably the "suck least".

Our instance is "still around" in readonly mode-- umm-- somewhere, because @blakeyrat hosted it.
CS itself became "Telligent" (the opposite of Intelligent), decided it'd be a good idea to charge EpicMegaBuxx for their product that was never designed to be used, and kill the community/free edition.
And that's why we're here.
