That's what she said

@Jaloopa Black, yes, but they're super unpopular. Don't think they have beige, though Razer might, with their heretical Orange switches.
I favor red, personally, but Das Keyboard only does blue and brown switches, and brown are the quieter option.

If mechanical keyboard fans don't like them, they're probably the kind I'd like

@Jaloopa Well, the whole point is choosing what kind of keypress you prefer, and that seems like a good thing to me. If you prefer membrane, that's great.
This is only the second mechanical one I've bought, and I have yet to make a decision, but it seems good so far.
(I wouldn't bring my other to work: it glows red. I can disable that, but it still looks overly fancy. Das Keyboard is nice in that it looks normal.)

My chinese mechanical keyboard that I haven't used in months has 10 or so different lighting modes.

My keyboard, mouse, mousepad, and headset at home glow, i have them alternate between orange and pink in a 30 second breathing pattern.
For work there is no backlight, just red keycaps because i wore through the letters on the first set and red makes the code compile faster..

Status: What is it with those fucking companies which produce software for schools? I just bought a book which includes software for video analysis. This is intended to enable you to do position/speed/acceleration measurements using a video you took - you can even let the program try to track the object automatically, all you need to do is setting up the x- and y- axis properly, it can even do perspective correction!
If only the fucking thing wasn't stuck in 2007 and the only video formats it accepts are MPEG1, AVI and Quicktime (.mov, that is. Not MP4).
Gah.
Which reminds me: The other software was doing some very dodgy stuff with its display - it simply created a huge letterbox around the content when viewing it on my 1920x1080 screen. I suspect that it may be slightly unusable on my Surface Book...
Also: The guy who thought up the UX should be taken out and shot. This is stuff intended for pupils and I myself have problems getting the hang of this. And no, not in a "Get off mah lawn" kind of way.

AVI isn't a video format, it's a container into which you can put any format you have a codec for.
H264 goes nicely into it.

Doesn't change the fact that I'll need to convert everything from MP4 to AVI.

Oh, and they really outdid themselves by including high-quality videos which really reflect the capabilities of current video recording technology.
I suspect this video was shot using a potato. And, yes, the "zoom" button does exactly nothing.

Eh, you don't need to transcode, at least, just containerize. So it's rather faster.
- Extract the AVC video stream from the MP4 container. YAMB or similar will do this. Optionally extract the audio as well
- Recontainerize the AVC stream into AVI (avc2avi)
- Optionally add the audio stream.
If you don't need to fart around with the audio, you can probably script it rather easily.
-
@Weng The point is not that I cannot do it but this is a software for pupils. This requirement to re-containerize only adds to the already stupidly high cognitive load you need to use this software.
Not to mention that when someone inevitably does a Google Search "Convert MP4 to AVI" they'll fall prey to the metric shitload of dodgy software sites out there.

@Magus I used a das mx blue (don't remember which one, but it was the one without the spinner/multimedia buttons) for a couple of years and I dunno, it felt kind of chintzy. I think the keys just felt cheap.
obviously, the solution for me was to spend $200 on a brand-new keyboard
it's a nice keyboard but still

@Yamikuronue You will be fine. I used to live in "Stoneham Tower" in Southampton University.
The name of the building was quite apt because I think most of the Cannabis sold in Southampton was sold there.
Other than Drunk Rugby players leaving "presents" and I mean turds in the lifts it was pretty sociable place to live.
In anycase, the building moved so much on the top 8 floors the water used to come out of the toilets and most cisterns usually have a good 2 or 3inches between the water line and the top of it ...
