Should downvotes be public?

why is it setting

@Lorne-Kates My understanding is its just reusing what mods already see, only for all us normal people.
The mods have some shitty UI.

?Do you really need me to answer another question whose answer is "NodeBB devs have no idea how to do UI"?
-

?Because 16px would be too little and 18px would be too much. Duh. :P

@heterodox
my vote UI still looks like this:
-
@darkmatter though in node-bb the colors are all jacked. it's red heart even when not selected. it worked better in theme surprised it still worked at all on node-bb because i never bothered updating anything.

I'm pretty sure that's just because emoji fonts have become colorful in the last few years.
-
@darkmatter \1f494\fe0e should do what you want: ποΈ
-
@ben_lubar That's red for me; I think he wants a monochrome variant and a red variant but I'm not sure there's a universal form of the former.
-
-
@heterodox actually i think the problem at that time was either that the ποΈ wasn't supported by my browser flavor, or that the already-red one fit in better with the theme. not sure which.

Putting U+FE0E after an emoji should pick the monochrome version.
-
@ben_lubar i just copy+pasted it; worked for chrome
-
Color: ποΈ U+FE0F
Monochrome: ποΈ U+FE0E

@heterodox Huh. And so does Android. So no really though, fuck your standard. :p
-
@heterodox Apparently Chrome just uses the B&W monochrome for both:

Chrome on macOS agrees but in a different way:

Goddamned. All the shitty bug reports are going to be enough to make me want to turn this off.

@loopback0 I'm still surprised with the amount of bloat they're putting on Unicode.
I don't need a 1TB library to use iso-8859-15
-
@Lorne-Kates
NodeBB developers figure, why do work fixing UI for people who aren't going to do work using it anyway?
-
@fbmac
You're already using a 2TB library to use java-padleft anyway, what's another TB between friends? :P

Now we just need the ability to see any person's upvotes and downvotes, not just our own.
We have that right now.
I meant being able to see all of a person's upvotes/downvotes (via their profile).
We can do this for ourselves, but not for others currently.
-
@Lorne-Kates said in Should downvotes be public?:
Also also, can we add a class or a data-attribute or something to indicate that a post has downvotes?
Something like total(+x -y) as seen on arstechnica?
-
@aliceif That would actually be helpful. Removing anonymous downvotes--particularly retroactively removing them from existing posts, when many people saw them as a feature and used them with the expectation of anonymity--is not helpful.

Why is anonymity so important to you here? Did you react positively to posts while secretly downvoting them?
Why not admit to your downvotes and be proud of them instead?
-

No, but I don't have to. If you're not familiar with the concept of "chilling effect", please educate yourself. And if you are, you don't need to ask this question.

@fbmac sure I can. I just have to hack the database.

Can we make deleted posts public too?

Anonymity's important to everyone on the Internet; it's a powerful concept, even as most people recognize its impracticality, and people don't like a façade that once stood being taken away.
Who wants to dig through their old down votes and reevaluate them now based on things like: Was this an argument in which I didn't want to fully engage at the time, but now may be challenged and pulled into it? Was this against someone who has a habit of holding grudges and bullying people seen as "enemies" in unrelated threads? That change in expectations is a problem.
I think there's a reason the functionality wasn't there originally before Ben wrote it in and a reason why you don't generally see the same functionality elsewhere (e.g. Reddit, dislikes on Facebook): It may be interesting, but what good can come of it? It's negative information for social relationships, not positive. It's just going to amplify conflicts that already cause problems in this group of opinionated hotheads. (Including myself in that, obviously.)
-
@heterodox - I agree anonymity is important in general.
Anonymity within an anonymous bubble, though, seems like a stretch to me.
To each their own, though..@heterodox said in Should downvotes be public?:

Except that I've rarely ever found that to work.

@anotherusername every new thing I learn about Unicode I think it's more silly
-
No.
Personally I don't have a problem people knowing I've downvoted them, but others will. And the fact that it's something that has previously been hidden means that people have made that choice based on that.
Any variation on making them not private means negating any votes made when they were private. Or not making that variation.
Back to the vodka. Nice timing by the way. On a Friday evening UTC when it won't be /too/ noticed until Monday.

Anonymity within pseudonymity.

EDIT: alternatively, the forum moves way too fast for me to notice there was activity in the other thread where the admins decided to remove it for now.

First we finally get public votes without warning, then they're silently removed, again without warning. Did Lucas take Ben on a bar crawl? Did he leave his tablet unlocked and does his cat occasionally run across the touch screen? We need answers!

@asdf it is in another thread. The NodeBB updates discussion thread.
