Owning a Cat Does Not Lead To Mental Illness, Study Finds
-
I just found the title amusing.
-
Correlation does not mean causation.
-
@Kian correlation is necessary but not sufficient for causation. Lack of correlation is a strong indicator that there is no causation
-
I knew this'd be about Toxoplasmosis as soon as I heard the title, but it's amusing nonetheless.
-
@Kian But it is caused by it.
-
@anonymous234 Insanity leads to owning a cat?
-
@fbmac Duh. You have to mentally ill to get one in the first place.
-
@fbmac Seems legit, though when I asked the cat about that study he refused to say whether cats had had anything to do with funding it.

Preferably white. They look better when you're stroking them and laughing maniacally.
-
@PleegWat I meant that causation causes correlation, but that too.
-
@anonymous234 The correlation between causation and correlation doesn't mean that causation causes correlation though.

If causation didn't cause correlation, what would causation even cause?

Stuff.
And things.

You should coordinate your cat to the prevailing colour of your wardrobe. Never mind how it looks, you look a lot better if the shed hair is less obvious.
-
@CarrieVS Or buy a brush.

Hahahaha. No. If you brush every day maybe you get a slightly more refined pattern of shed hair. That's if your cat will tolerate a lot of brushing - supposedly many of them like it, but no-one's told Poppy.
And the only thing that'll take the hair off clothing is a sticky lint roller. The washing machine just spreads it evenly across the entire load, and even the hoover does next to nowt.

I think it helps if they're brushed from a very young age.

2-3 months too old? I have no idea if she was ever brushed before we got her.

I wouldn't have though so, but I'd have to check with a feline psychologist to be sure.

I really don't understand why the washing machine doesn't fix it, but it pisses me off. Because ginger suits don't really suit (smirk) my complexion.
There's got to be some sort of additive that can help pull it away from the clothes.

Wouldn't that be more of a subtractive?
-
@fbmac said in Owning a Cat Does Not Lead To Mental Illness, Study Finds:

However, the correlation between the presence of correlation between the presence of causation and the presence of correlation and the absence of correlation between presence of causation and absence of correlation does imply that causation causes correlation.
(Any presence or absence of correlation between the absence of causation and either presence or absence of correlation is irrelevant.)
-
@djls45 But the $64,000 question is: does corrugation imply causation?
-
@RaceProUK No, but it does usually imply cardboard.
-
@anonymous234 causation causes effects.
-
@Captain But does it imply them?
-
@masonwheeler Only materially.
-
@masonwheeler said in Owning a Cat Does Not Lead To Mental Illness, Study Finds:

It'd be additive to the washing process.
@djls45 The words correlation and causation have lost all meaning; I hope you're proud of yourself.

My former cat used to shed a lot. Sometimes I would brush her for an hour and pull out a massive lump of hair. And afterwards she'd keep shedding exactly as much.

Every time I have to clean car hair I genuinely think "there HAS to be a better way".

That's an ironic cat name for this thread.
Does Poppy repeat their name all the time.

Maybe a little.
But it's not that bad. It's just the specific instance of this logic:
((A & B) & ~(A & ~B)) -> (A -> B)
where A happens to be the&
operation and B is the->
operation.Maybe a truth table will help explain it...
A
B
(A & B)
~B
(A & ~B)
~(A & ~B)
(A & B) & ~(A & ~B)
(A -> B)
((A & B) & ~(A & ~B)) -> (A -> B)
T T T F F T T T T T F F T T F F F T F T F F F T F T T F F F T F T F T T I guess that makes this a tautological definition?
Maybe it is that bad...

No, I get it; I'm in a graduate course going over all of this right now, as a matter of fact. I was just remarking on how when you use words over and over within few sentences they start to sound wrong and lose all meaning.
-
@heterodox I understood. I just like to play the straight man. ;)

@heterodox They do graduate introductory logic?

@Captain said in Owning a Cat Does Not Lead To Mental Illness, Study Finds:

Well, no, they do mathematical foundations of computer science, but as you might imagine it comes up in that context in order to build other material on top of it. Algebra comes up too.

Well, you have to take into consideration the author of the article.

From Wikipedia:
Toxoplasma gondii (..) causes the disease toxoplasmosis. Found worldwide, T. gondii is capable of infecting virtually all warm-blooded animals, but felids such as domestic cats are the only known definitive hosts in which the parasite can undergo sexual reproduction. (..)
In humans, T. gondii is one of the most common parasites in developed countries; serological studies estimate that 30–50% of the global population has been exposed to and may be chronically infected with T. gondii, although infection rates differ significantly from country to country. For example, previous estimates have shown the highest prevalence of persons infected to be in France, at 84%. (..)
T. gondii has been shown to alter the behavior of infected rodents in ways thought to increase the rodents' chances of being preyed upon by cats. Support for this "manipulation hypothesis" stems from studies showing T. gondii-infected rats have a decreased aversion to cat urine. Because cats are the only hosts within which T. gondii can sexually reproduce to complete and begin its lifecycle, such behavioral manipulations are thought to be evolutionary adaptations that increase the parasite's reproductive success. The rats would not shy away from areas where cats live and would also be less able to escape should a cat try to prey on them. (..)
A number of studies have suggested that subtle behavioral or personality changes may occur in infected humans, and infection with the parasite has recently been associated with a number of neurological disorders, particularly schizophrenia. (..)
Crazy.
