There's a dog food commercial that says something about dogs and wolves being similar as puppies and then says "and even as adults, they share an evolutionary connection".
That sentence is pretty interesting. Here's a similar one:
"Even as adults, most humans are humans."

Even as adults, most humans are more or less humans.
Some less than others.

Thanks, Valve. That's definitely something you should be showing to people who spend $9.13 on your $84.92 package that includes $200.81 worth of games if purchased separately (possible) and not on sale (who are you kidding this is Steam).

Since wolves are canis lupus and dogs are canis lupus familiaris, it is at least true.
-
@ben_lubar I guess what they're trying to say is "even as adults, they share a lot of instincts and behavioral traits". The (false) assumption being that animals start as stupid playful puppies, and then slowly lose their instincts as they mature or something.

Not really a WTF but

I guess that's the tsunami caused by Lucifer's Hammer or what?
-
@anonymous234 My understanding is that dogs don't really mature; they remain puppylike into adulthood, while wolves lose most of their puppy traits. This is because the puppy traits are what we bred them for: obedience, playfulness, friendliness.

I used to have a GitBook account that I could sign into with my GitHub account. At some point I stopped receiving communication from them. This is what happens now when I try to log in:
it used to work fine...

A rockslide caused by an earthquake:
-
@fbmac There's not been a tsunami caused by asteroid strike in recorded history. In fact, if we're going to have one of those, we probably want it to hit land; a big ocean strike would be Bad.
-
a big ocean strike would be Bad.
I'm pretty sure it would be Bad, wherever it hits. But yeah, the effects of an ocean strike are pretty well described in Lucifer's Hammer.

Gives the song Surfin' USA a whole new meaning.

... Why does this
buttonlink never actually show me details?
-
@Tsaukpaetra I remember it used to open a text document in notepad, but just now when I tried it, it opened event viewer.

Yes. In theory, whenever chkdsk is run now, it logs an event in the Application log with the text results of the command (ID 26214). I assume that if the message is too large though, said log doesn't happen.

This piece of crap is actually just an embedded Internet Explorer window with some kind of interop dll that can talk to the remote (which appears as just another USB-HID).
For some reason, I can't complete this step, like, the server is not responding or is returning a 500-error. Skipping doesn't work, but luckily Cancel does.
Edit: No, wait, apparently cancel did indeed save the configuration.

It certainly looked like it was going that way back during the Dot-Bomb (OK, this was actually a while before the bubble burst, but it wasn't hard to see it coming):

If you're going to write a macro with the comment
This definition of SOME_MACRO will generate "Warning C4005: 'SOME_MACRO': macro redefinition" with a subsequent line indicating where the previous definition of SOME_MACRO was. This makes it easier to find where SOME_MACRO was defined.
please test your macro to make sure it actually does what it says before releasing it to the wild. The warning/error line numbers do not in fact point at the erroneous previous definition of SOME_MACRO. The warning/error line numbers point at the comment above...

Public Shared Function SplitUserName(ByVal username As String) As String() ' Used in ManagerUsers. Dim splitter() As String = New String() {":", ";"} Dim result() As String = username.Split(splitter(0)) Return result End Function
Try as I might, I can see no earthly reason why this function would hard code an array, then use one value of the array. I can only assume it was intended to eventually do more, or it's been refactored to do less and not cleaned up

What's worse, the codec might think that it is indeed splitting on the other value!

What does
svn blame
tell you?
-
@PJH not a lot since it's TFS
Even less since I inherited this project in the form of a DVD with what turned out to be not quite the latest code. I did see the previous developers' TFS history during the handover, and the comments were useless anyway. Before check in comments were made mandatory there weren't any, and after they were all identical
updated teh codes
type comments
-
@Jaloopa The important thing is to be able to find out what the changes were that produced that bunch of code (and who did them) since then you can usually guess the rest. The log messages are often less useful.

Actually, considering the people on this forum it's simply to be expected that a challenge like
Try having 9 in a row without also having 8 in a row
cannot pass unchallenged.
In other news: Why on Earth did no one post this yet, considering my heritage?
-
So I refresh Reddit and suddenly
I'm sure this could've been phrased in a way that wouldn't make it look like a wrestling match live stream...

I'm guessing the LIVE is added by an automated system perhaps?
-
@DescentJS Yeah, I'm fairly sure it is, but still.

Yeah. I figured @HardwareGeek would be the one to do so though.

7 or 9 are fine?
Do not count to 8, nor to 9; 10 is straight out.

-
@hungrier wow they finally added back the ability to turn off autoplay in playlists!? I've been using a browser extension for that

E_NO_REPRO
Maybe that only appears on Youtube Mix playlists?

Apparently I'm TRWTF, because I forgot I had Youtube Center installed. But TRRWTF is not having that button by default.
