Pretty cool, but the one thing it never quite explains is how the dominos in the reservoir move back in order to be ready for the pusher. Or if it did, I missed it.
-
@masonwheeler Friction with the floor, it looks like
-
@RaceProUK Yeah, that's kind of what it looks like too, but that would mean that you need incredible precision when placing them, otherwise friction with the walls of the reservoir would be likely to overcome that--especially when you have only a few dominos in the reservoir--and you'd end up with highly inconsistent spacing.
-
@masonwheeler True, but I'm guessing wood-on-wood has a significantly higher friction coefficient than wood-on-Lego
-
Needs a hopper and a sorter.
-
@masonwheeler friction depends on how much force there is holding it against the surface in question. Gravity holds it against the tabletop, but there wouldn't be much friction against the sides even if it happened to be touching. The friction that did exist would apply torque which would tend to push the domino back toward the middle of the channel where it would not be touching either side.

So they used Lego to build a battery-operated domino dropper that I swear I had from Domino Rally 20 years ago?
Huh. Neat.

if it's battery powered what's the cord coming off the motor and off screen for?
-
@accalia Connecting the battery box?

I was about to say, I'm pretty sure these existed when I was a kid. Just not in Lego form.

NUH UH! CAN"T BE BATTERY POWERED BECAUSE WIRES!
RAWR!
.....
did i do that right?
-
@accalia the one that @e4tmyl33t was talking about was battery-powered. This one built in LEGO is not, or the battery pack isn't mounted on it at least.

I never said the new one was battery-powered, those words clearly described the previous-generation device that I used to have (which probably took chunky D-cell batteries or something...I wonder if that's still in my attic somewhere)

The era that guy's lego is from, the battery box is again as large as the device.
-
@PleegWat the motor didn't look like LEGO to me. And it's not; he confirms this in the linked description:
I used an old tape deck motor for the drive. I'm powering it off of a long wire to a home made benchtop power supply. A Lego motor would have been more elegant but I didn't have one handy. All Lego motors have some built in reduction gearing, so the first belt and pulley would have been unnecessary.
-
@anotherusername I sit corrected.

@e4tmyl33t said in Domino row building Lego machine:
Domino Rally
And why the HELL can I remember the name of that particular moneysink?
-
@PleegWat you're not really wrong though; he says he originally built it in 1985. He rebuilt it to be more compact, and I'm assuming he reused the same motor, but he doesn't really say.

could be parsed: So they used lego to build a [battery powered domino dropper that i had from Domino Rally 20 years ago]
or it could be parsed wild mild accalia autocorrect: So they used lego to build a [battery powered domino dropper] that(like) i had from Domino Rally, 20 years ago.
guess which reading i took?
:-P

noooooooo..... the contrarian part is where i "refuse" to acknowledge your "intended" meaning as the correct one. I mean how obvious can it be?

I refuse to recognize your contrarian-ness, thereby negating it with my contrarian-ness.

Yay for confusing parsing!
"The complex houses married and single soldiers and their families"
"Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana."

This one shouldn't be confusing at all. Then again, that might just be the side-effect of my inner Grammar Nazi kicking in and knowing exactly what it's saying...
@masonwheeler said in Domino row building Lego machine:

I've always heard this with the second one in plural. "Time flies like an arrow, fruit flies like bananas."

The old man the boat.
Again, clear as day to me.
Proof:
"The old" - Subject, implied "people"
"man" - Verb, to crew/staff/run
"the boat" - Object, a thing that floats in water
:D

-
@masonwheeler It may be my fancy for fantasy literature which tends to favor some more archaic phrasing and sentence structure that makes parsing these sentences easier for me as well.

@e4tmyl33t Awww... I was hoping you hadn't read it before. The look on your face (so to speak) when you reached the end would have been priceless.
-
@masonwheeler I'm pretty sure I combo groaned/facepalmed super-hard the first time I read it, though I'm used to wordplay like that. A friend of mine considers himself a "master of Pun-Fu" and will routinely interject with puns and other word gags, sometimes to good effect, sometimes to "Dammit, man..."
...I wonder if he's read that before. I'll have to link it to him and see.
-

Perhaps I should face him. I was trained in the art by the greatest master of puns the world has ever seen, the veritable Emperor of Puncraft himself... Attila the Pun.

@Zecc that video is nearing 7 years old. I have been watching his videos for many years, due to being a woodworker. I think the coolest video of his, that is applicable to these forums is this one:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GcDshWmhF4A
Which is now approaching a decade in age.
Pretty nifty though, a computer made of wood and powered by marbles.

If an "adding machine" is considered a computer, then I think I could come up with a simpler design.
http://godwinrobinson.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/The-Story-of-two-buckets.jpg
The left bucket is your operand register, the right one is your accumulator.
Seriously though, it's a pretty cool design in the video
-
@Maciejasjmj Fail. In case of overflow it doesn't automatically reset to 0.
-
@masonwheeler Saturating on overflow is valid behaviour as well. At least for signed numbers in C...
-
@Maciejasjmj said in Domino row building Lego machine:

To be fair, adding is all a computer does, when you reduce it to the basest fundamentals.
-
@Maciejasjmj said in Domino row building Lego machine:

I think it would make a cool display to show CS students. Especially the overflow part of it.
There is also a guy who built domino computers.
-
@RaceProUK Actually, addition is not a fundamental computing operation. It requires AND, OR, and XOR operations to implement.
And all three of these more basic functions can actually be built up out of NANDs.

@Zecc But can it play Crysis?
Seriously, it would be entertaining to build a simple
microprocessor out of it, like with 4-bit registers and a few bytes of RAM.
