:wtf: How can this be so wrong??? (AKA the Discopocalypse thread)

What baffles me is that there is no way for site owners to limit who can anonymise a user. Hiding the button with CSS comes nowhere near to disabling the functionality, it's akin to hanging a painting in front of the jewelry safe in the wall. Anyone with a brain can peek into the source code of the page and see the Anonymise this user button in full glory.
In my view, properly designed software allows the site owners to finetune who can perform certain tasks. It's fine if the software ships with a set of defaults, but should be changeable. In Discourse, it looks like they have no such concept whatsoever.
I know I'm nitpicking here, Jeff obviously has an idea about what his software should look like (and less options = less confusion), it's just not how I would design such a thing.

Eh...you can just not make all your users moderators. I think the guy in the thread is correct that anonymizing should probably be an admin only thing, especially since it's not reversible. But yeah, there's not really much in the way of customization in what moderators vs admins can do.
I'm not sure the inflexibility is a terrible thing, except that Jeff is nearly guaranteed to pick a retarded default.

That's a good start, but every community needs moderation from time to time and TL3 alone doesn't always cut it, I think.

Temporarily banning someone ("You've been bad, now go play elsewhere for a few weeks") is something I would trust a mod with. Anonymising (removing someone) is an irreversible process and is not something which should be available to too much people.

It all comes down to how you want to design your software. Personally I love to have everything configurable (although that doesn't have to mean through a GUI) but I can see the reasons for going with "we pick a set of defaults and you'll have to deal with that". Just don't be surprised if you get questions then. :)

: No, you will need to [email the user to let them know their account was anonymized]. Typically the user is the one asking staff to leave the site, so they already "notified" themselves

Comment of the thread goes to this guy:
: Do you think that the problem could be resolved before my birthday ?
-
: This should also be done for days such as May 31 which does not actually exist. I would also like to point out that such days do not crash the system.
DINGDINGDINGDINGDING hand rolled date logic detected.

@Jaloopa mmmmmm, hand rolled dates

This seems like a very drawn out "The cake is a lie!" joke, and they just haven't got to the punch line yet.

When pushing the obvious fix causes an even more obvious problem! And you don't catch it until production because what is dev or stage?!? Discourse!

@izzion ..cakeday? like the plugin we made for Is It Discourse Or Just Me?

@aliceif At first I thought "confetti effect" must be some software analogy I'm not aware of. But I guess me means a literal animation of confetti or something when the wizard is done.
I certainly think there is some reason to bikeshed this effect, however. Pouring poison into a cup? Guillotine blade falls? Dumpster fire?
-
@aliceif Oh man, this post is so full of bullshit it's not even funny.
What many people don't realize is that the bikeshed effect is, in fact, a form of procrastination.
Including you. Instead of getting your piece of shit software together (or better yet, throw it away and let someone do it from scratch) you bolt on new half-assed features nobody wanted.
And it can suck in highly technical developers
It sucks even more in incompetent bullshitters like you.
I find that the amount of discussion on a software feature is inversely proportional to its value.
Uh-huh. Like when you discussed AT LENGTH and FOR WEEKS what fucking hue of blue the numbers should be.
On the other hand, if we sum up the amount of discussion about Dicksauce here in this forum alone, we get a HUGE FUCKING AMOUNT, which means that the value of Dicksauce - according to its creator - tends to zero.
Well done, Jeff.
-
@ChrisH Also, if that fucking hypocritic asshole applied his bullshit theories to himself, it would look like this:
Hey guys, look at this great feature I bikeshedded today!
Wow, what a stupid idea.
Yeah, who would want that?
Can it be red instead?
Why all the round corners?
This crashes our instance because we disabled $OTHER_STUPID_FEATURE. Can we get it back up again please?
Hmm, with all this discussion, the feature is probably worthless. I'll revert it.In reality:
Hey guys, look at this great feature I bikeshedded today!
Wow, what a stupid idea.
Yeah, who would want that?
Fuck you, assholes. [DELETE THREAD] [INSTA-BAN EVERYBODY]

Because if you've managed to acquire a large block of IP real estate, you're definitely probably a spammer. Don't worry though, there's a solution!
….
You can change the
min_ban_entries_for_roll_up
site setting to a much higher value.Because the problem is definitely not with the misfeature. I definitely don't want to only manually block large chunks of potential users when I as an admin think it'd be wise. I'm really curious as to what the default is now….

@pydsigner So with clever use of a VPN, one could easily get large groups of people auto-banned.

@pydsigner
Be easier to ambush Sam, Australia only has like 100 people / IPs or something, right?(Though, on the other hand, everyone in Australia is subscribed to a VPN service because Netflix, so it might not be thaaaaaaaat effective...)
