@Tsaukpaetra Has anyone noticed that turning your phone upside down fades the screen to black (but doesn't actually turn it off)? Is this their idea of "power save" mode?
-
@Tsaukpaetra They definitely do have a "battery saver" option that, when enabled, blacks out the screen under basically the same circumstances as a phone call would (the "face detecting sensor" is blocked). I haven't experimented enough to confirm whether it does it with the phone inverted but the face detector otherwise not triggered.

It (also?) blacks out the screen when the phone is turned upside-down.

Something's changed in the matrix...

Oh dear, a Pokémon Go event.

:person_jumping:

Best part about family fun event at work: someone popped a lure on the pokéstop and I caught a Bulbasaur.

@Tsaukpaetra looks like an unrelated event that they are going to drop a lure at

Today I think it was only 110° out.
So... All the oceans have evaporated and the climate apocalypse has begun?
Don't be silly. Water doesn't boil until at least 373.2.
Technically, it could boil at 32.0 in extremely low pressure conditions.

Yes, it stops rendering all of the game crap and all that's left is your screen backlight and notifications when your phone is tilted upside-down (i.e. if you put it in your pocket), and it will continue to vibrate/make noise when stuff happens. Not very much power-saving, but

Status: Encountered a 340 CP Eevee. Threw the works at that bad boy, Razz Berry, Great Ball, boom! Hm, one candy short to evolve it. Time to evict the lowest Eevee!
Wewt, it evolved into an 852 CP Vaporeon. New species bonus!
Dammit, I should have saved that evolution for when I planned to pop a Lucky Egg tomorrow.
-
@Fox Meh. I'd rather be able to just wakelock and turn the screen off. Much more power savings. ;)
-
@Tsaukpaetra Yeah, that'd be nice.

I loled.

The longer the servers are down this morning, the more I want to make a throw away Twitter account so I can tweet Niantic to poke Mongo...

So i haven't played this, and can't be bothered... particularly as my main phone is a Windows phone.
But I thought it's quite easy to setup an android phone with GPS/sensor simulator meaning that this type of game comes with a serious flaw. Locations on top of pentagon etc etc

Yes, if you're smart enough. By default though it uses Google location APIs which take into account things like Wi-Fi and cell tower connections. I spoofed the location myself and found it wildly entertaining to watch the character run back and forth between where I actually was and the stop half a mile away.

I am not familiar with Android development but I am guessing on a rooted Android these can also overridden? So.... how long until "Pokemon Go Location Picker" (for rooted phones) apps appear? I might go and break out the dev tools for a quick buck.

Hence the qualifier "if you're smart enough"
Course it only takes one smart guy to make an App like you said.

Well, at least the servers stayed stable for like 25 minutes of my Lucky Egg Evolution Fun Fest, so I went from almost level 13 to now level 15.
I need to stop using Incenses though. Servers go boom every time I do.
-
@Helix that's already a thing. Not much they can do to prevent it though...
-
@Helix It's not even that hard. There's APK files floating around out there with an emulated phone and a copy of Pokemon Go already installed on it. Now you can use your developer tools to set the GPS location to anywhere.

@Tsaukpaetra I don't think Abra's "hanging out", IYKWIMAITYD. I think he wants to Netflix and chill.

@Tsaukpaetra said in The Official Pokèmon Go Thread:
It's actually using the pedometer functions to count your steps, which is why bikes/cars/etc don't work.
I think I saw--in another context--some time ago, some goof building a machine to fake the pedometer out.

@Yamikuronue said in The Official Pokèmon Go Thread:
I have seen it go up when I'm in a car.
Perhaps you've been groovin' to the tunes on the radio enough to trip the pedometer.

Granted, after 5 minutes it said he'd walked something like 0.15 km, so it's not exactly fast
12 inch records have what, some 90cm of circumference? At 45rpm that gives you roughly 40 meters per minute, or 2.4kph - a very slow-paced walk. Two hours on the edge of the record to have a 5km egg hatch - hope you have some good music on it.

Status: well well, at least it doesn't just kick you back to the sign-up page without warning anymore...

Oh ok - thanks. I would have thought wide spread cheating will cripple a game like this after a while.
