RE: SQL Server and SSAS
@Jaime I think I forgot to mention that this is a Data Warehouse for reporting and analytics. SPs are used for data cleaning, modelling, etc. The reporting layer is also based on SPs. This may or may not be a WTF, but that's the way it is.
EDIT: We have over 1,000 reports, so "doing it another way" isn't really an option.
-
RE: SQL Server and SSAS
@Jaime Let me rephrase my question. Developers develop SQL stored procs. Within these SPs, they sometimes need do an INSERT INTO... EXEC... statement, but with some added functionality, which isn't achievable within SQL itself. How would you solve this?

@Jaime said in SQL Server and SSAS:

@Jaime said in SQL Server and SSAS:
no process on the SQL Server should be making outbound connections
I agree, but for this specific process I'm not sure there is an alternative. A little bit of background: We have an SP that gets widely used called LoadQueryIntoTable. This works the same as an INSERT … EXEC statement but with some additional functionality (data type validation, abitility to only insert subset of columns, etc.). This functionality is achieved via a C# program (which is part of a bigger framework). You have to understand our culture to understand the existence of this SP, but in short, it needs to exist. I have tried implementing the functionality in SQL itself, but it is impossible to derive the metadata of some queries, which is the requirement here. We have a "new" solution which doesn't call the exe directly, but calls an SP on a linked server, where the framework's database resides. This call can't be done via linked server directly as some calls are done via Service Broker which runs under sa. The CLR will use a service account.
So my question is, if you can't avoid having SQL Server as your client (via LoadQueryIntoTable) what are your options?
EDIT: I lied. This is another use case. We discussed a better solution for my original problem this morning.

@Jaime If you see the stuff that happens on our server you will have a heart attack, die, and then turn in your grave.

RE: SQL Server and SSAS
On a side note, it's amazing how many processes I have created over the years which use xp_cmdshell.
-
RE: SQL Server and SSAS
@Zecc Actually, when executing the statement through a CLR stored proc, the OLE DB error actually comes through as a proper error, rather than an informational message. So handling that is trivial through C# try/catch. But you get an upvote anyway for getting me to use a CLR stored proc.
-
RE: SQL Server and SSAS
@Tsaukpaetra I'm using SQL Server's native OLE DB driver to connect to SSAS from SQL Server. A quick Google suggests that this isn't available to me.
-
RE: SQL Server and SSAS
@Zecc This might actually be useful as a last resort. The problem is that I'm not using C# at the moment, I'm doing all the calls from within SQL Server. However, I can probably create a CLR SP to do the processing, which should enable this option for me.
-
RE: SQL Server and SSAS
So, I have started a project at work to get rid of all xp_cmdshell calls on our server, while having completely forgotten about this "solution"
Which means this question is open again, though I suspect there isn't an actual solution for this.

RE: WTF Bites
On a related note, our team had a team lunch at a restaurant a month or two ago, where we saw each other for the first time in a year. Across from us they put together a few tables for a group of about 30 people. There were exactly 2 females at that table, and the others all looked like stereotypical programmers, so we assumed it was some IT company having a company lunch. One of the females at our table immediately said, probably correctly, that the 2 females were likely the Project Managers of the company.

RE: No WTDWTF for you!
Update: I am now working from another network, and the site is working perfectly, even behind Netskope. So the problem is with my home network, or possibly ISP.

Yesterday I was busy, so I only visited the site once, and it worked fine. This morning I got a 403 again. It's obviously been resolved now.

@boomzilla I don't know if it's related, but I seem to be getting the "disconnected" toaster more often lately. It usually happens when my computer is bogged down — out, or nearly out, of memory and/or space for the pagefile — but sometimes it pops up for no obvious reason. I hadn't seen that for quite a while. It seems like it started 2 or 3 days ago.
You have to plug toasters in or they do nothing to the bread.
They're also no fun in the bathtub since they installed GFCI.
Why would you do that? Do you like your toast getting soggy?

No WTDWTF for you!
I'm having some weird connection issues.
Last week Monday I tried to visit the forums. I received a 403 Forbidden. This was from my work laptop. Now, my work is implementing a new internet security tool (Netskope), and it's in its POC phase. So they are continually making changes to it. And, since it's in its POC phase, we are allowed to disable it for now. I thought that the problem might be part of this, even though I didn't get the standard "Prohibited site usage" message I usually get for visiting the wrong website. So I turned it off and tried again. This worked. I'm still WFH, so I turned on my home PC and started browsing from there. And life was good.
On Tuesday though, I got the 403 from my home PC as well. I tried a few times, and after a half an hour or so, it connected successfully. And later 403'd again. This went on for the rest of the week.
Somewhere along the line, I tried from my phone using my mobile network. I waited until my home PC 403'd, and tested my phone. I did this more than once and it worked each time. Meanwhile, my work laptop is still 403'ing permanently with Netskope enabled.
So I'm not sure where the problem could lie. Obviously Netskope is now blocking the site on my work laptop, but my suspicion is that it's because something changed on WTDWTF, not on Netskope, due to the timing of my home PC also 403'ing. I also considered that Netskope might be accessing my home router, but all the restricted websites work on my home PC.
TL;DR:
TDWTF 403's permanently on my work laptop with internet security enabled
TDWTF 403's intermittently on my work laptop with internet security disabled
TDWTF 403's intermittently on my home PC
TDWTF works fine on my mobile network -

RE: RPG: The End War
Seeing everyone go there separate ways after the talk with Sister Constance, Nigrim decides to also spend some time relaxing in solitude. The gardens seem a perfect place for this. He isn't sure how long they would stay here, but this place is a major improvement over their recent lodgings, if only because of the lack of chores. And he was going to take full advantage of that.
While strolling through the gardens, his thoughts wander to his immediate future. What will he do now, now that he is effectively out of the military? Maybe a wandering magician, doing party tricks at the small towns? His thoughts also turn to the demons for a bit, but he dismisses them fairly quickly. The monastery seems to have the situation under control.
-
RE: RPG: The End War
Through the whole conversation, Nigrim is standing at the back, listening. He has a slightly amused smile on his face as he sees how most of the party are stumbling over their words trying to convince this Sister Constance that they're not that bad.
I mean, a paladin from this very monastery just saved us purely on a dream, brought us back here, and is now vouching for us. What do they expect will happen?

RE: RPG: The End War
Nigrim throws a quick, irritating glance at Bob. Before joining the army, he was used to being surrounded by intelligent conversation. It took some time to get used to the lower intelligence of the average recruit in the army, but he was eventually able to do it with some effort. Bob, though, is beyond his efforts, and Nigrim can already see that spending a prolonged amount of time with him is going to be a severe test in patience. He briefly contemplated trying to convince the others to send Bob off to the Earl, but the way most of his compatriots spoke to Bob, he suspected they had a sense of compassion towards him, as opposed to the irritation Nigrim felt, and such a suggestion would not go down well.

Nigrim takes a short while to catch his breath. A lot happened in a short amount of time, all unexpected. He then follows the rest and fetches his gear from the chest. After putting on his robes and storing the rest of his equipment, he sees Jillian busy reading a letter. Curious, he approaches her.

RE: RPG: The End War
Nigrim's eyes widen when this... hellish being, for lack of a better description, suddenly appears out of nowhere. Knowing it was summoned by the now-dead spellcaster doesn't make it less intimidating. In fact, the fact that it's still there, even though the spellcaster is dead, is truly frightening. However, Nigrim steels his resolve and decides to cast Burning Hands at this new creature. But first, he moves in such a way as to avoid hitting Bob as well.

RE: RPG: The End War
Nigrim gets up slowly after being thrown out of the cart. He hears Panapos's warning and looks around. He sees the spellcaster on the top of the cliff and quickly forms the patterns necessary to cast Fire Bolt. He would have preferred Burning Hands for the increased damage, but unfortunately the enemy spellcaster is too far, so he has to settle for the inferior spell.
