Actually, I remember having to use a Lexmark printer-scanner like 12 or 13 years ago. (I think it was X2310, but I might be wrong here.)
So, I was fighting with it again and I was talking with my friend and he said that he had this printer too. So I asked him hopefully: "And how do you like it?". "It's a very nice piece of equipment... to throw with."
I don't know the quality of their printers now, but it used to be utter shit.

No one is driven to suicide, they choose suicide.
This might be an interesting illustration to your point, I think. In short, it's an anti-suicide post written by a psychiatrist that has been met with a quite hostile reaction from suicide-pondering-and-depressed people, ended with someone threating to commit suicide because of it and was subsequently deleted. (Hence the Wayback Machine link.)
I like how we have no less than four transphobia flamewars going on simultaneously.
Were they all mainly fueled by the opposition to Fox views?
I don't know what that is, but it is. I suspect it has to do with our society sheltering children from dealing with failure, but I do not know this for certain.
Again, this guy would say that that's narcissism. He's written a whole blog on that subject. It's quite insightful.

Oh fuck, took me a while to remember what you were talking about since it wasn't released under the RTL brand here.
Yeah, many people know this game only as "Skoki narciarskie 2002. Serdecznie zapraszam, Adam Małysz".
TBH, the only reason why I learned that was, once upon a time I was very determined to find if there were newer/better installments. BTW, the last one was from 2007 and although it was quite a pleasure to play, they really got a few too important things wrong: really long jumps were impossible and game was waaay to easy. And 2002 still wins.
Still not Deluxe Ski Jumping, though.
If by "not DSJ" you mean that it wouldn't run on school computers, then sure, yeah. Otherwise, maaaan is this game still great, awesome and blows shit out the water. Plus, DJS's single player sucked ass.Of course I'm talking about DSJ 2 -- 2.0, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3(? think there was a 2.3).

I know, 'cause there are waaay more subsidized movies in Poland than not. So what?
There are so many conspiracy theories about this movie that I don't really want to discuss it in any extent.

RE: Su Moo Nein The Belgium Comeex Foliatet Hist Wat Is Leepking Ingin Thes Tifler
This is kinda fun.
OK, so first things first. I want to stress, that my argument wasn't based on presumption that TVP Kultura is not covering its cost. My whole argument was, that even if it didn't that doesn't (or shouldn't) matter.
It's important that shit like that is being made and it's important to give the creators certain amount of freedom and allow them not to worry about commercial success. That's especially important when it comes to movies, because they are quite costly. In the age when patronage isn't a big thing anymore, it's extremely important (although in Poland it's supposed to be coming back on).
Now, back to this whole subsidies thingy. TVP, as a public company, has a mission. This mission is to "propagate culture and cultural values". Now TVP wants to make money and mission comes in the way, so they cut such programs. Now they're not in line with their mission and even if they don't need to care about that, there are still some groups that demand them to fulfill it, politicians etc. If they weren't a public company, weren't subsidized, they could give a flying fuck, but since they are subsidized, they have some spare money and are required to act.
So yeah, some other entity could have started such a channel. But it was much more likely to be created in those circumstances.
If Breaking Bad had barely any publicity, would you subsidize it so it wouldn't die?
Nope. Why?Might be bad market research. Might be random factor. There are many reasons why they didn't do it, just like with everything else - widescreen TVs in the early 2000s, health regeneration in FPS games, trackpoint, autogas...
Sure. Or might be the fact that culture is barely making it even. Most theaters (playhouses) in Poland are dumbing down, so they can sell enough tickets to survive. There are just a few enterprises that are self-sustainable without dumbing down, only because they are subsidized, or in one case, because they have a patron. That, or someone was crazy enough to make an entire channel dedicated to culture because fuck you, that's why. And don't tell me it doesn't happen because it does happen.
Wasn't about to. I also wouldn't disagree if you told that "the sky is blue".Many successful companies were made out of crazy ideas. Hell, even in Poland we used to have entire TV channel dedicated solely to video games!
Wait a sec. Successful companies and we used to have an entire TV channel? It wasn't successful, then. There was subsidized movies here
Where is that?

-
RE: Su Moo Nein The Belgium Comeex Foliatet Hist Wat Is Leepking Ingin Thes Tifler
OK, now we're way down the "I think" road.
I don't know if TVP Kultura is self-sustaining or not. I think it might not be but then again: it might be.
You think that ~1% would suffice. Maybe it would, maybe it wouldn't.So your claim that 99% don't give a shit is another "I think". Plus, it leaves a reader with the impression, that 100% people (not viewers) give a shit about the commercial stuff, whereas it's a much much lower number (probably in low tens).
I don't like being in the "I think" realm, so let's get some stats. E.g. the 2013 media shares stats: group 4+: 22nd place, group 16-49: 30th place. All around: 0,5% of the whole media market with, wait for it..., a higher than 100% growth since 2012. So they are (were) growing fast, they are being watched and the number should even be higher, since they're also available on the VOD website with ads.
Heck, it has more viewers than HBO!
So, well, yeah, what I was really trying to say when I was saying that "the probably don't even pay for themselves" was: I don't really care if they pay for themselves or not. Those stats don't really point into neither direction, but they certainly show that when it comes to the number of viewers, it's in the top 25%.
And now: why didn't any commercial network launch this type of station? Because they don't care, because they don't see culture as being profitable at all. So even if Kultura is bringing home the bacon, it wouldn't have been given a change, if not for the fact that TVP was subsidized and that they are required by law to offer cultural shows (that's one of the reasons why TVP Kultura was created in the first place: so that TVP 1 can stop offering them).
Plus, yes, when it comes to culture I am a leftist. I do believe that theaters, museums, TV stations as TVP Kultura, independent filmmakers and such should be subsidized, so that they don't die because people prefer Braking Bad.
On another note: most of the good Polish movies of late were subsidized.
EvenMost notably, the Oscar-winning Ida was. -
RE: Su Moo Nein The Belgium Comeex Foliatet Hist Wat Is Leepking Ingin Thes Tifler
So if not for subsidies, people wouldn't be able to watch these kinds of programs, because non-subsidizes TV need to make money out of commercials, and they only can get enough money out of commercials if there are enough people watching your station, which is impossible for TVP Kultura because people don't want to watch these kinds of programs... oh wait.
I see what you did there. You went from "enough people need to watch" to "no one wants to watch".
Aside from that, "oh wait" what? Not enough? Sure, or maybe enough, but otherwise (other shows) could be more. Sure. That's exactly my point.
Plus, commercial stuff is subsidized, too. -
RE: Su Moo Nein The Belgium Comeex Foliatet Hist Wat Is Leepking Ingin Thes Tifler
I'm pretty sure some history channels do that once in a while, but can't name any off the top of my head.
Well, this one is quite unique. Recognized Polish musicians go learn from and play with folk (like deep country, no electricity folk) musicians. Pretty sweet.I think I saw TVN Style having those too.
Not of such quality. Really. TVN Style runs book shows like "book of the month that will sell well".And I don't buy this whole "publicly owned companies are better than privately owned" bullshit.
Don't know where you got that idea it was my point. Just that being subsidized gives more freedom to do some high-quality cultural shows and that it's valuable. Why would I? I'm not at all interested in that shit.
So you can see the difference. And it's huge. It's reaaaly huge.
Sure, you can go on saying "commercial TV stations are just as good" with no evidence. That's cool, too.
-
RE: Su Moo Nein The Belgium Comeex Foliatet Hist Wat Is Leepking Ingin Thes Tifler
I don't watch this kind of stuff often, so of course I don't know much about it, but IIRC Kino Polska has similar stuff, and I'm sure there are more channels like this.
Nope, they don't, they just run Polish movies/TV series. TVP Kultura create their own shows: about architecture, folk music, books. If you're in the country, you should check out their VOD. Truly, it's a goldmine that could not have been created by any of the commercial stations. And that's why I don't buy into this whole "everything should be privatized and commercialized" bullshit. Sure, those shows definitely don't make money, I doubt they even pay for themselves. But what is the alternative? MTV? And no Jim Jarmusch?
-

And our TV license-funded broadcaster produced several seasons of localized Dancing on Ice. So I don't see how license changes anything.
Yup. On the other hand, they're also running a great culture-oriented station called nomen est omen TVP Culture. You don't see commercial broadcaster undertaking such enterprises.

Well, you have. Before there was the presidency. And there were some, who wanted it even then.

Cause there are no public stations in the US. Blakey, do your research sometimes.

If by good you mean "kinda looks like a comments section for a new site created by someone who didn't really think that colors are a hugely overrated thing and gray looks really clean, slick and professional and should be used everywhere!", then yeah, sure.

RE: Spaces in file paths, part 7.38*10^89
Get your point entirely.
I agree, that Wine is never a good argument. It's a decent alternative for people who already have a reason to switch, or have already switched, but it's not an argument for switching. Although now there's this whole PlayOnLinux thing going on, which does a nice job, but it's mostly good for older games. (Still, I found a few old games to run better with wine than on Windows, like the great RTL Ski Jumping 2002. )
I'm not saying that everybody should start using OSS, nor that it's appropriate for all use-cases and users. I'm just saying that it's not always as bad as some people make it out to be, or maybe it even might not be bad at all. In some cases, it's even preferred, like when it comes to webdev, which is now going on mostly on OS X and Linux and that's for a reason.
Hey, to each their own.
-
RE: Spaces in file paths, part 7.38*10^89
OSS in general
Well, of course it depends entirely on the tools you use, but I've often seen that this happens mostly because people come to OSS/Linux with certain set of habits they want software to behave and are not willing to adapt.
And this is where OSS tools often fail: they make it too easy to change its behaviour (e.g. KDE). So, new users start hacking and hacking and hacking and hacking the shit out of it and then they quit unsatisfied saying that it's a time-sucking vampire.
More often than not, it's easier to adapt to the new ways than fight them. Lately, I'm starting to believe that well-designed tools that DON'T give you much choice are the better ones, especially when it comes to day-to-day stuff.

I'm not following this thread closely, but... duh? Why are we having a flamewar about a statement as obvious as "ewll, if you try to herd six million people and lead them to their death, it kind of helps when they don't all bear fucking arms"?
Because he's running for president. And what he says doesn't mean what he says. It always means at least more and.m sometimes even something else entirely.
So what did he say? He said: it couldn't happen to us, cause we have all the guns. And thus owning guns is a good thing. I'm not arguing, if gun law in USA is a good thing or bad (don't have an opinion). I'm arguing, that making such an oversimplified claim is stupid, especially since he used it to score some nut-points.
That's why.
