You misread the news. The latest curl has 3 critical vulnerabilities. MS's version has more.

Maybe everyone else is doing it wrong? Yes, that's it! I'm the only sane one.
Not the only one.

As someone who has the taskbar correctly on the bottom, the lack of clock on the secondary displays is the worst of the worst thing about W11.

I've got one of those. Forgot about that since it's a semi-retired machine. Decided to see what 11 looks like on that since it's a I-don't-care machine. Oh well.

The answer was more clear before the whole Edge "Buy Now, Pay Later" shit.

That's not even the best part. First MS says “Chrome? That browser is so 2008!" which is followed by “Microsoft Edge runs on the same technology as Chrome".
So, instead of 2008 Chrome, I should use Edge, which according to Microsoft, uses the same 2008 technology.
I think that gets the unintended ironying award for the day.

I don't trust either of them, for all the obvious reasons. But using edge instead of Chrome reduces the scope of spying a little bit. Microsoft already have access to everything. Using Edge makes no difference. Google on the other foot, gets its grubby claws a little less into my life if I don't use Chrome.
Of course, it's even better to skip the spyware of both companies.

I hear the latest preview build brings back the normal method of choosing your browser. Anyone can confirm?

@Tsaukpaetra updating registry keys directly Nope, still doesn't work.

In a statement to The Verge, Microsoft indicated that the addition of this button was based on customer feedback.
Ya think?
"Through the Windows Insider Program you will continue to see us try new things based on customer feedback and testing."
Like a child testing how far they can push their parents' patience.

Windows Insider Program --> WIP --> Work in Progress
-
"Progress"? You're being generous.
-
@Zerosquare Going down that route ... both "Work" and "Progress" are questionable in that context. But one out of three isn't too bad.

But there, you have to actively go get it, and it's not like MS can forcefeed you edge on those platforms

status: trying out Windows 11 for giggles and shits.
OOBE is terrible under 640x480 resolution, which Windows decided was appropriate because it can't figure out what the Intel integrated graphics is, I guess.

In the wizard, there's a section which has a list of toggle switches with explanation text. Due to Mandatory Whitespace, this list ends up taking about 4px of height, meaning you can't actually read the text.
Worse yet, the Next button suddenly acts like a Page Down button (not like you can tell since its text is cut off), and scrolling down the mile-high list is an exercise in frustration.
Ended up holding Enter, probably accidentally slipped through some extra screens like that but who cares, right?

You will notice a completely updated UI that aligns with the new visual design of Windows 11, including rounded corners
Yes, rounded corners! That is the update we need. Every five years we need to switch between square and round, otherwise we run out of shit for our designers to do.

Well, they can also remove and restore drawing a border around the edges of the windows to keep you on your toes about where stuff starts and stops.

@hungrier this is clearly a leaked mockup of Windows 12 where the rounded corners are given a texture and the menu bar is separated back again from the title bar.

Too many programs ignore the system colors, framing, controls, etc. now. It's a curse.

How else are they going to offer custom themes? Because obviously every program should be themed differently than the OS!

"Ignore" sounds passive. You have to go out of your way to remove the system default window decorations. It's hard to do it wrong, but they go the extra mile.

Hmm. I feel like the trend has actually really died down. Back in Windows XP heyday everybody tried to invent a more tacky window frame, shadows, even non-rectangular windows. Then came faux-Vista, complete with faux-Aero...
Well, unless your defines "now" so that it includes XP days, too.

The designers at a place I used to work at tried to do that to us. We tried. When I finally had enough statistics about how many bugs were being generated and how much time we were spending on just the caption (which meant other features were ignored), they finally relented and let us go back to standard win32 captions.

@Parody said in WTF is happening with Windows 11? And nothing else:

Hmm. I feel like the trend has actually really died down.
It's been a while since I've installed a program of any substance that by default uses the standard system framing, colors, menus, and such. Some of them (like Visual Studio Code) let you switch to it, but most are these customized browser-in-a-box programs whose only nod towards Windows UI conventions is putting the close button in the upper-right corner of the window.
The last one I tried (and subsequently uninstalled) was dark gray on dark gray on black enough that I couldn't read the title bar text, could barely tell that they'd put extra controls in the title bar, and couldn't tell where the window ended because I had a dark wallpaper at the time.
-
The best part are all the apps that use window decorations but mimics the system default, but are slightly off. Like smaller buttons and/or tighter spacing between them. All the Windows icons on lazy Linux ports. Or Steam on macOS that kept using the 3D-ish glass effect buttons after the rest of the OS went flat design.

I feel like there’s increasingly a trend to say “fuck it” to system native behaviours and use frameworks that attempt to write-once-run-anywhere, similar to the recent debate on iOS vs Android, and all the time developers go for these solutions, it’s never going to change.
Especially with the likes of Electron bringing web style everything to the desktop by default…

Swing called. They want their shit back.

Including needing three gigs of ram and 100% CPU to render an image and a bit of text.
